Chapter 434: Naruto vs. God Realm

Hello MH forumers. 1TrueSensei here, trying my hand at a review. My very first one, so it’s gonna be a little rough. But I think I can get better with time. Feel free to give advice, constructive criticism, and your thoughts. I won’t waste too much of your time on introductions, so…

Last week, we were left with what certainly had to be one of Naruto's best tactics in the history of the manga. The entire last page left reader's amazed and in suspense as to what Naruto and Tendou would do next. Well, looks like we'll finally get the chance to find out.

This week we are treated to colored cover pages to start off the chapter, before we jump right back into the action. We'll see the limits of Naruto's newfound Sage Mode, a taste of the powers of both Tendou and Preta, and we'll be graced with the presence of some characters that have been out of the spotlight for a while. So sit back, relax, and let the 1TrueSensei entertain you...

The Legend of Uzumaki Naruto!

In classic Kishimoto style, we see a cover page with multiple layers. At first it looks merely like a classic Bunraku style puppet show, giving a nod to Japanese culture while celebrating the Naruto manga entering its tenth year. But I believe it goes deeper than that. Back in Part 1, Naruto made mention of “The Uzumaki Naruto Ninja Chronicles” when fighting Gaara. In his mind it was the story of the young boy on his way to becoming Hokage, and the stuggles and fights he goes through to achieve his goal. And though we haven't heard mention of it from the main character for quite a while, Kishi obviously hasn't forgotten it, and he shows it in these cover pages.

Before our very eyes, Naruto is writing his own legend. By himself, he acts out the story that will one day be told to future generations, and we the readers, just like the audience at a puppet show, sit enraptured as the plot develops week after week. We’re seeing the “Legend of Uzumaki Naruto” as it is being acted out before our very eyes. And whether we personally like how the story is going or not, we still come back weekly to view the next chapter in the Legend.

Insta-Kill-from-Above: Name Patent Pending

The move Naruto pulled off on Naraku Pein last week was so pwnsome, I named it and patented it (pending, of course) for our hero so that other mangaka don't steal it:mad. By transforming into the FFRS, one Naruto (assumed to be the original) tackled Preta while the other came from above to finish off the reviving body. The move was so ingenious, that an 800-year-old toad (Fukasaku) and the boss of all toads (Bunta) momentarily became cheerleaders. This once again lends credence to Naruto's newfound nickname of GARuto, as other manly characters are turned nearly into simpering girls around him. But I digress...

As one Naruto gets off of Naraku's body to run towards Tendou and the other prepares to punch in Preta's throat (our little boy is becoming a ruthless shinobi; I'm proud of him:crying), Tendou stretches out his hands to fire off a Shinra Tensei, thinking to himself, "This will be close..." But as you can see below:

he had nothing to be worried about. One clone dissipates while Naruto lands hard enough to crack stone then bounce again. Looks like Tendou is back in the building.

*It is here that the 1TrueSensei must add an interjection. IIRC, there were two clones last chapter. One pulled off the "Insta-Kill From Above" (remember, patent pending) while Naruto transformed into the FFRS and took on Preta. But here we only see two in action. What happened to the third? I'm sorry to say that we don't find out this week, but next week perhaps...

As Bunta, Hiro, and Ken, the Heavy Hitters of the Naruto Toad Army (also known as Battletoads 2.0), attempt to squash the Pein bodies, Naruto, Katsuyu, and the Ni Dai Sennin hold a mini-conference. Tsunade's summon once again proves her intelligence and battle experience by accurately guessing the reason why Tendou went so long without using his ability, as well as determining that Shinra Tensei was indeed used on Konoha. I can only imagine what an awesome team Tsunade and Katsuya probably made in the Sannin's prime, with Katsuya able to supplement Tsunade's healing abilites as well as lend tactical intelligence.

Naruto determines that he can't use nin-or taijutsu against Pein, and Katsuyu tells him about the five second interval between attacks while Fukasaku suggests genjutsu since it worked on Pein when he fought Jiraiya. Naruto, a dunce at genjutsu casting, throws the idea out immediately. While the planning is going on, Tendou channels some of the awesomeness of Neo and in a very Matrix-esque pose:

hits the Heavy Hitters in a pretty heavy way.

What? No laughter? That's fine, then. As long as 1TrueSensei laughs at his own jokes, all is right with the world:D

Funky Frogs Fly Very Far Through Forests and Through Air

In a move that can truly be called godly, Pein does the unthinkable by launching each of the toads up into the air and out of the village (keep in mind that they are fighting in the center of what used to be Konoha), with Bunta shooting through the forest that surrounds the village, Ken flying through the village wall, and Hiro crashing through the forest in another direction to finally land in a lake. We can all hope that with how hard Bunta landed he didn’t land on his own sword, and the other two toads didn’t have it much easier either. If Pein were just a little more hot-blooded he'd be worthy of the GAR title himself. But I once again, digress...(you'll find I do that a lot)

Of course, three multi-ton summons flying above the ruins of the village to land with crushing force on the ground is bound to attract some attention. So for the first time we see other members of the Rookie Nine notice the battle, with Katsuyu informing them that Naruto is battling Pein and telling them that he doesn’t want interference.

Could it be love?!

Chouji, next to a medic nin, shows surprise that Naruto is battling alone. Kiba remarks that they’ll just have to have faith in him, with Akamaru enthusiastically agreeing. Yet the real surprise of the chuunin we see is Hinata, who upon seeing that Naruto is fighting alone, prepares to rush out the fight alongside him. Kou, her guardian, holds her back, saying that she’ll only be a burden if she joins him, and she stops with a defeated and worried stance.

I liked this scene because it shows the impact that Naruto has not only on the people of his village, but on his age mates as well. They're inspired by him, and they trust him to protect the village. Did they not, nothing would've stopped Chouji, or Kiba, or even Hinata from rushing out there to assist him. They wouldn't have done this just to help Naruto, they would've done it because they don't think he can protect them. Certainly three years ago Kiba at the very least might've gone out there regardless, so it shows the growth of the relationship between Naruto and his generation. And of course, for a very loose NaruHina shipper like myself (though I won't admit it in public), this was a rewarding few pages. Truthfully I believe it implies nothing serious, but it was nice to see Hinata's concern for Naruto and her willingness to step into battle with him.

Back at the battlescene, Naruto sees the attack done by Pein to the toads, and decides not to waste anymore time. Fukasaku informs him that gathering the sage chakra necessary for a genjutsu will take some time, so Naruto decides to aim for the five-second interval while Ma and Pa prepare.

Where's my Kryptonite?!

As Fukasaku reminds Naruto that he only has one more clone at Myobokuzan and of his five minute time limit, Shima acknowledges the cleverness of using clones to remotely gather sage chakra, and asks why more weren’t made. Fukasaku tells her that looking right and left at the same time are impossible, and that two clones were the most Naruto could make and still be able to mold sage chakra. Naruto further informs her that three clones is the most he can make in battle, as any more would interfere with the one at the toad mountain.

I for one am glad to see these limitations placed on what was increasingly looking to be a never-ending powerup. It places more urgency on the battle itself, and also explains why Naruto has been so conservative with his shadow clones so far. Looks like many of us fans finally found the kryptonite we were looking for.

As we see the damage done so far by Naruto in the battle in the form of the fallen Pein bodies: ( at Human and Naraku)

Pein calmly walks in Naruto’s direction, determined to bring this battle to a close. He acknowledges Naruto’s strength, saying that no one has ever pushed Pein so far in battle. This is in many fans eyes the affirmation that Naruto surpasses Jiraiya's accomplishments against Pein, and I kinda have to say I agree. Though Naruto had more info on Pein and the help to go along with it, if Naruto hadn't created many of the tactics and opportunities he did against Pein all the info in the world wouldn't have saved him.

We see Tendou stretch out his hand, and, channeling Scorpion from MK this time *Get over here!* use Banshou Ten’in, the move that pulls opponents towards him. As a shocked Naruto flies towards Tendou, Preta steps in to deliver a gut-shot that sinks in so deep, this amateur reveiwer cringed. With a statement of “That’s enough,” (said calmly of course: Pein never lets anyone see him sweat) Tendou watches while Preta gets his moment of glory by channeling some WWE superstar-mojo, putting Naruto in a Full Nelson grip .

Ma and Pa silently implore Naruto to hang on while a worried Hinata looks on from the sidelines. As Tendou “reassures” Naruto that he won’t kill him since he’s a jinchuuriki, our hero, in classic Naruto style, shrugs off the punch from a second earlier and boldly tells Tendou not to underestimate Sage Mode, along with saying, “It’s my turn!” Moments like this make me admire Naruto's "Never Say Die" attitude even more, and remind me of what drew me to Naruto's character in the first place. Tendou off-handedly implies that Sage Mode would indeed be troublesome, and we then see Preta employ a never-before-seen skill…

Suck 'Im Dry, Preta!!

Naruto senses power leaving him, and he quickly realizes that Preta is sucking the chaka directly from him. Now we see how Preta holds his own in taijutsu battles, as he can absorb the chakra of his opponents when he comes into contact with them. For a body that was previously seen as only defensive, this is a pretty badass ability. It adds a new dimension to a fight against the Pein brigade, and is yet another ability for opponents to look out for if they know to expect it. I for one expect to factor it into some of my debates *coughSasukevsPeincough* as another reason why Pein can't be beaten by just anybody. But I digress...

As the Sage marks slowly fade away, Naruto’s eyes close, with an eternally calm Tendou remarking: “Capture of the Kyuubi Jinchuuriki: Complete.” closing the chapter with a seemingly unconscious Naruto in Preta's arms and Tendou giving yet another badass faceshot (how does he do those so easily *RAGE!*:mad).

I definitely enjoyed this chapter. It had a more "filler" feel to it since the action went down a notch or two, yet even reduced the action was awesome nonetheless. We're seeing the Legend being written before our eyes, and I for one am enjoying every minute of it.

Seeing the others of the Rookie Nine place their trust in Naruto was also a joy to read. We got to see the change in how they view Naruto, and a hint of the role he'll take upon himself in the future.

Chapter 434 Rating: 9/10:D
