Chapter 533: An Oath

Hey there everyone! This is my first review on mangahelpers, and I hope you all enjoy reading it! Note that this review will (obviously) contain spoilers, so if you wish to be spared I suggest moving on to another thread.

Now, let's begin on our journey to the wonderful Narutoverse. It's been two weeks since a chapter has been released, so there's been (to me at least) a reasonable amount of hype and I'm sure we all expected something breath taking after this two week break. Last time, we witnessed the glorious battle between Mifune and Hanzo, and the chapter ended with Asuma fighting Ino, Shikamaru and Choji. This week's chapter continues on from last week's ending. Choji has just backed out of hitting Asuma, and in return Asuma warns the group to escape from a ninjutsu he prepares to fire.
And now, without further ado, I present to you Naruto Chapter 533 Review!

Detailed Plot Summary
Shikamaru, Choji and Ino prepare to fight their sensei, Asuma, with their full hearts and powers. As Choji prepares to attack Asuma in an opening, he stops abruptly, finding himself unable to kill his emotions and bring harm to his sensei, though fully aware that his sensei represents a great danger.
Asuma kicks Choji back and prepares to shoot out a powerful ninjutsu towards Choji and Shikamaru quickly tries to use Kage Mane no Jutsu to grab Asuma. Asume jumps out of its path and prepares his blast. Ino quickly rushes in, and using her momentum pushes both herself and Choji out of harm's way.
The scene changes to Tenten wielding the Sage of the Six Path's fan, Bashōsen commenting on how powerful it was, and who may have dropped it. Meanwhile, Chouzo continues his battle against Dan while elsewhere on the battlefield Kakuzu manages to escape from Izumo and Kotetsu.
We're then taken back to Shikamaru, who is standing in front of Ino and Choji. Angrily, Shikamaru reminds Choji of their orders to fight against Asuma and their promise to defeat their sensei. Asuma adds in that Choji must get over his softness, and that if he wishes to survive he must give the battle his all. Choji begins to retaliate when shockingly Asuma screams at Choji to stop complaining, and calls him 'Fat ass'. He tries to instigate the fight by screaming 'Fight me!'. Choji looks up angry while Shikamaru and Ino watch in surprise as Choji launches forward to punch Asuma. But as he gets closer, Choji begins to recall all the memories he had with Asuma in various restaurants, and his will to fight disappears, causing him to stop again abruptly. Angrily, Asuma takes out two kunai and spurs Choji on. Shikamaru throws Asuma's wind blades as a distraction, and quickly Asuma negates them by throwing a kunai and swiftly following up by launching to attack Choji. Both Shikamaru and Asuma yell at Choji to get out of the way, but just as Asuma prepares to hit him, Choji catches Asuma's hand and twists the Kunai away from him.
In shock, Asuma and Shikamaru turn and realize that Ino used the Mind-Body transfer technique to infiltrate Choji's body, leaving Ino's default body completely unguarded. A white zetsu realizes this and quickly rushes behind Ino's defenseless body while Shikamaru quickly uses the Shadow Manipulation technique to fight off the Zetsu.

We are then taken to inside Choji's mind, where we see Ino and Choji conversing. Ino explains to Choji that she understands how he feels, and that both Shikamaru and Ino didn't want to fight him either, but that they must because their knowledge of his abilities give them an advantage over the other Alliance shinobi. She then asks if he remembers what the earrings were for, and Choji remembers Asuma giving them the earrings for officially becoming Chuunin. He explains to them that the earrings symbolize their coming of power, and that their team: Team 10, will be officially disbanded so that they may go and eventually become team leaders themselves. He also informs them that these earrings symbolize their clans consider them adults. The moment they return their old earrings to their clansmen, that will be the moment they grow up and are officially depended on.
Choji recalls this while Ino continues to fight Asuma, trying to withstand his fire jutsu and the Ash searing cloud. Chozou quickly intervenes and protects Choji's body from the ninjutsu. Shikamaru watches Chozou protecting his son and recalls Asuma's last words to him about who the real kings are. The unborn youth in Konoha who will be the next generation. He tells Shikamaru that one such youth is inside Kurenai, and requests that Shikamaru takes care of 'his king'. Recalling this gives birth to something inside of Shikamaru and he yells at Choji to man up, explaining that they're no longer the kids they were, and that their job was now to act as protectors. Ino supports Shikamaru by imploring Choji to remember why he wears the earrings and Chozou finally pitches in by reminding Choji that he is a 16th generation Akimichi and to act like it.
Recalling (yet another) event, Choji remembers the time his father explained the importance of the Nara, Yamanaka, and Akimichi clans and how much they both compliment each other through their powerful abilities, and how important they are for the village's strength. Chozou explains to the kid Choji about the importance of the earrings, and the oath taken once the next generation finally prepares to step up in place. Choji looks at his father's earrings and explains that it looks painful and that he would rather not have one, but Chozou laughs and tells him that one day Choji will have Chozou's earrings so that his memories get burned into Choji's.
In a flash forward, we see Choji finally preparing to give his father back the old earrings and put on the new ones and Chozou tells him that one day the time will come when Choji passes on the earrings to his own children that contain his oath within them. Choji questions if he'll ever get married, and Chozou angrily tells Choji that he lacks confidence and points out that he managed to get happily married. Choji continues on explaining that times have changed and he may not find someone, but Chozou shrugs the comment off and tells Choji the time has come for him to give his own oath.
Nervously, Choji nods and we get back to present time where Choji begins to think to himself that he always thought when the time came, his mind and body would both mature and he'd be powerful, and that everything would fall into place.
Meanwhile, Shikamaru, still using the Shadow Manipulation technique on Ino, and Chozou prepare to fight off Asuma. However, Dan continues on fighting the other ninjas Chozou left behind, and they scream out that they need Chozou's help. Remembering the previous battle, Chozou apologizes and promises to return. Deep inside of Choji's mind, Choji begins to recall the oath he swore that he, at the time, thought was stupid. Lit with a renown passion, and his will to fight returning, he apologizes to Ino and explains that he's OK now, and that he wants to take full control of his body again. Ino obliges and Choji undergoes an intense transformation, growing the Chakra butterfly wings without taking any pills. Chozou watches in shock and notes that Choji did not take any pills and Ino returns to her body while Shikamaru watches in surprise as Choji prepares to fight with a serious look on his face. Asuma regards that look and smiling, thinks to himself that that was the look he wanted to see from Choji.

Plot Analysis
This chapter held many interesting surprises that I'm sure many fans found entertaining. The first of which was undoubtedly Tenten wielding the Bashōsen. I find it interesting that the Bashōsen found its way to her because she is probably one of the most suited to wield it. After all, despite my annoyance that her only ability seems to be using weapons, with this specific weapon, she can make wonders happen. I'm actually looking forward to seeing Tenten's future battles, it may actually change the low image I regard her with.
As for everything else, I was also pleased to see Kakuzu escape from Izumo and Kotetsu. Though I did like seeing them extract their revenge on him, it just seemed very sad that those two were able to pin him in a corner. Now with Kakuzu out on the prowl again, I'm hoping he's going to rack up some points for the enemies by killing a couple of characters. After all, he is exceptionally powerful, so him being overpowered by two chuunins did greatly disappoint me.
Asuma's blatant disregard for the taboo word also was very amusing to watch. It was obvious that he didn't mean the words, and that he was only trying to make Choji mad so that he would take the battle seriously, but I felt it kind of shattered the whole kind image of Asuma momentarily, and the man who we knew as the awesome dude who went out saying nice things to everyone is now calling one of his students a fat ass.
As for Choji, I can't say I blame him much for stopping abruptly so many times. But seriously if he can't take Asuma seriously, he shouldn't jump in and put himself in danger. I felt it was very noble and smart of Ino to take control of Choji. That was the right thing to do. It was also both amusing, and slightly annoying, to see everyone scream at Choji. I did enjoy Shikamaru recalling Asuma's final words, and it was even better because we finally caught a glimpse of his son!
I must say that at the beginning of this battle I kinda got annoyed at the whole rehashed Ino-Shika-Cho thing, but it's actually turning out to be very interesting! It was good to see some more in depth behind the scenes information from the three clans. Finally, and one of the most important things of this chapter, it's great to see Kishi didn't forget about the pills and the Akimichi butterfly thing. It's very impressive that Choji managed to undergo the transformation without the pills, and based off of the last time we saw this transformation, I think it's going to be reasonably powerful.

To finish off, this was a pretty interesting chapter, but I don't think it lived up for a two week hype. I don't think it could have been far better, but it could have been worse, so I think it was decent enough. The ending and a glimpse at Asuma's child were enough to make this interesting, not to mention Shikamaru's epic scream towards Choji.

Overall, I'd give this chapter a fair 7.8/10

OK, so this was my first Review for a manga chapter (I've done game reviews before, but they're considerably different).
If you feel I'm lacking something, or should add something different, please tell me! I want to make high quality Chapter reviews so... gonna need feedback :)
