Hello, fellow forumteers,
As it must be apparent to all of you'll Alibaba is not the most well-loved character and is often looked at with a fair amount of scorn from a lot of fans all across the fandom, most of which I personally believe is completely misplaced and really unjustified.
To start with, he has been accused by many people to be weak willed and spineless( he has been called the same thing in many impolite ways.), which is not true and one only need look at his recent actions, which even if they did end with him dead, was something that he did against Kouens back, putting nearly everything at risk by going and trying to negotiate, which was gutsy to say the least and as far as the weak willed comment is concerned, need I remind you that he did decide to kill Hakuryuu and in one panel, Ohtaka displayed this perfectly by drawing his eyes to show his determination. As far as his indecisive nature is concerned,well lets hope that his death does something about that.
Now that being said, one of the main reasons he receives a lot of scorn is due to him making a very questionable decison to join the Kou Empire and become their vassal. Due to this, not only is a lot of hate for the Kou Empires actions being directed to him as well, but it is also being used as an excuse for him to belittled as a KV who is weak and would rather kiss ass in order to gain, what many believe is a false sense of reclamation of his country and take this as him wanting to just work under other KV's ( this and this show just how uncomfortable he is with the whole situation.) and in particular on this forum at least has been viewed as a clear indication that he just wants to be Kouens subordinate and nothing but that.
This is not true at all, and the main reason that this view persists is because of many people not really understanding what is the reasoning behind him making that decision and that is what I wish to provide some clarification for.
Now the decision to become Kouens subordinate was something that he had taken an entire evening to make and that is why the possibility that this decision was made in haste and without considering all the factors is not there and given that this decision is a life-changing one which requires you to consider all the factors present, which were provided to him in excess let me add.
Now to begin with let me note down the three conditions that had to be satisifed:
1) Cut all ties with Sindria: Obviuously to ensure that he is really serious and is not at any risk in just leaving them when things go bad for them.
2) Marry an imperial princess of the Imperial family: To allow him to settle down in the Kou Empire and make it even difficult for him to leave if he has a family that he has to look out for.
3)Provide a proposal in ruling Balbaad from a viewpoint they lack:
Now, what the itallic part represents is that these guys will have the final say in whether or not he truly gets the autonomy he desires and this particular condition is basically a means for the Kou Empire to not only ensure that whatever he proposes meets their criteria and their objectives before his( which doe take the whole point of autonomy away), but also a means for them to even interfere and see to it that every and any thing he wants to do is put under heavy scrutiny by them, and honestly any half wit can see this and it is obvious as bloody daylight that they only want him for his Magi( at that time) and for his MV, for the world war to come , which is why many people are right in looking down for taking the job and the thing is that he will not even get the position or the control unless he helps out with the World War, so why would someone as smart as him even take ittrying to answer this ,is where his decision begins to make sense.
For some reason between Alma Torran and the current civil war, people have forgotten that a world war is imminent and just as he needs to help out the Kou Empire in this world war to get that shitty position, even the Kou Empire needs to win this damn war for the sake of their goals to succeed, as long as the SSA and the Reim are separate countries their objectives will always be short of completion and that includes Balbaad eventually losing their cultural identity.
Now as far as this war is concerned, well the deciding battle is Sindira vs the Kou Empire and Sinbad definitely takes this as of now , NO QUESTIONS ASKED.
But at that time, the Kou Empire did seemingly have AT supporting them, and the thing with these guys is that they are dangerous and Alibaba knows this seeing as they just gave money and weapons to his home country and watched it burn from afar, having people like that who can just set up the pieces for everything to just fall apart eventually is a valuable asset to have especially when you want to destroy a small island with an OP king, and on top of that due to AT the Kou Empire could effectively produce KV's on demand, and these two factors( among many other things that he did not even know at that time), more than increase the Kou Empires chances of winning.
But if this is true, then why is it that the Kou MV's suffered so much against the Medium( allies would give each other a heads up for something like this right?) and had to fight without even the support of their Magi( who would have really helped imo.) and what is even more perplexing is that why are they going out of their way to recruit him if they can produce KV's on demand, this definitely suggest that the alliance between AT and the Kou Empire is not as strong as an alliance this important is supposed to be, which is why I think he went on to actually question Kouen about AT's relations with the Kou Empire( which is really something he should not have felt the need to do if they were as strongly allied as had been hinted in the story prior.).
Now irrespective of whether the alliance between AT and Kou was breaking or not, one thing was evidently clear, the Kou Empire was not confident about their capabilities of winning the war, which is why they were making preparations for improving their chances. When such measure are taken, one of the main tactics that any body will follow is to try to weaken their opponent from the sides and then attack the center( this would probably mean attacking Sindria in an indirect way.) and one thing that became evidently clear to Alibaba regarding Sinbad is that he is ruthless and I am talking 'Mogamett not caring about the Goi' and would definitely not spare any efforts in attacking the Kou Empire the moment they declare war on them, and the sad part about this is that this would make Balbaad a major target to Sinbads wrath, since it is a major base and is critical for the Kou Empires plans for future conquest of the Western Continent, and this is the main reason why he is supporting the Kou Empire in the first place, [U]what he mentioned here can easily be applied to this whole world war situation as well[/U].
This is not a bad decision, considering that the reclamation of his country he talks about is not like that which Hakuryuu was referring to, where Hakuryuu was more than comfortable in creating a mountain of bodies if he has to, Alibaba' reclamation has always been to look out for the best interests of the citizenry of Balbaad and make them self-sufficient, which does mean prioritizing them making it out of this war and then thinking about a way to see to their culture.
I am not going to lie and say that this is the only alternative he had but his other alternatives were quite horrible to say the least:
1) Join with the Reim Empire: Yeah, forever irrelevant Reim who are at risk of being taken over by either the Kou Empire and being marginalized by the SSA( or something which really scares Muu.), is obviously not a good decision at all.
2) Develop his own faction: Other than being put under the same threat as the Reim Empire even if his faction is left alone, there is no way possible that they will ever be able to become strong enough to even take on the Kou and the SSA at once, which is what is necessary for really saving Balbaad the way he wants and this is made even more difficult by the fact that the one person who can actually make Alibaba strong enough to possibly country them a.k.a Aladdin had other concerns at that time, from which he would have never backed down to give Alibaba the 100% support to really become a major player like Hakuryuu did thanks to Judar.
3) Join up with Sindria: This is actually one option which frankly drew him a lot of criticism for not taking, since even when the true relationship of AT and Kou Empires alliance was not evident it was safe to assume that Sinbad would be able to emerge victorious, but the thing is that aside from being ruthless Sinbad is an enigma. Alibaba does not what he is really after and it is very difficult to predict what he will do for you in a compromising situation and he is super powerful, sort of like Gyoukuen, in that Kouen had no clue what she was after and it is incredibly difficult to predict what she will do in any situation, plus she is more powerful than him any day, which makes trusting such people a very stupid and risky thing to do.
Also Sinbad would never support him to go against the Kou Empire, as the SSA's motto is 'Don't invade or be invaded', which means that even Sinbad would hold the carrot that is Balbaad as bait for Alibaba to help him out in the war and not do anything to help Alibaba reclaim it, plus even if Alibaba were given an army and did take Balbaad back, what would stop Sinbad from aiding him in keeping it, creating a dependence till the whole might of the Kou Empire descends on Balbaad, turning it into a warzone and then use that situation to just one shot every KV from the Kou Empire.
Considering the situation, Alibaba was in at that time, where a major war could strike within a decade at most and he would realistically never be able to become powerful enough to do something allying with the Kou Empire in order to see to it that he can reduce the brunt of war that will fall on Balbaad is not in any way a bad decision and this does not make him look weak or spineless, like many people have assumed and it is also clear as daylight that the positon of Balbaads governor is the last thing on his mind.
And I do think that he did consider all these factors when he made his decision with the time given.
Let me add, that him joining the Kou Empire and trying to see that the World War does not affect Balbaad is not going to prevent the advent of the World War at all and the threat of it being destroyed is still there, but given the situation the best thing he can do as time would go by is to grow in influence and use whatever influence he garners in the best way to see to it that the situation itself is such that if things do go bad Balbaad somehow comes out of that in one piece and if possible( which lets face it is a huge 'if') prevent the World War to even take place and this take understanding the situation around the World and gaining influence and thinking long and hard about what needs to be done in order to ensure his lot does not suffer that much at all, which does require one to have a certain degree of influence to begin with and Kouen is indirectly giving him that by making him a general in his army, working directly under him and potentially a strong ally through this political marriage.
