Info AMV Contest (Tentative)

Just to go into more detail (atleast more than what I put in my first post.)

Categories


Self-explanatory. People choose what type of AMV they're making and submit it into one of the following (may have to reduce the amount of categories if they're aren't enough people.) Should people be allowed to submit one-per category or only one AMV for the entire contest? I think 1 amv would be better, to prevent anyone from winning multiple categories.

1. Action
2. Comedy/Upbeat
3. Drama/Romance

Subcategories

Judges could look at all the amv's that were entered and choose amongst them which one was the best for each of the subcategories. Trailers would be shorter amv's that are around 30 seconds to 1 minute. Maybe the mods could be the judges and choose which ones they though where the best for the subcategories while members vote on the main categories (action, drama and so on). Accept for best overall, I think the voters/everyone should choose that one.

2. Best Anime Mix
3. Best Trailer
4. Best Overall

Maybe people could post a link to their video from Youtube and could also mention what category they want to enter their amv in? I don't know what could be done about people who can't see the amv's due to copyright, unless there is some other webpage they could be uploaded to that won't block them (metacafe maybe?).

Of course everyone that enters should get an honorable mention, since this is just for fun.

Thank you, Naruffy, we'll certainly take your suggestions into consideration

We'll have to check with our techs if we can do anything like upload them to MH itself. It might be possible and that would get around the copyrights issue I suppose. It might also be possible then to upload the AMVs anonymously to remove possible bias or favoritism.

Another possibility we can consider for how to choose the winners could be a combination of judges and voters, though judges' votes will probably hold greater weightage. What do you think? Back in the MangaHelpers Manga Awards, we also had STARs Choice and STAFF Choice where in addition to the overall winners, we also displayed which manga/whatever had the most votes from the STARs (Manga Editors, translators, artists, reviewers) and staff (admins, globals, mangahelpers, senpai). We didn't do this for the Anime Awards due to having much fewer votes, so whether we do this here might also have to be dependent on whether it is worth it (I mean, if we have 15 people voting and of those, 7 are staff... It just wouldn't make sense).

I thought it could be also interesting if everyone, or if there is a category with a given episode or a scene provided that everyone is ought to use and every participant got to make the best of it. Could be more fun too and maybe easier to compare the works in the end

It hasn't been decided yet, but most likely we'll start a thread where those who wish to participate can sign up Currently, we don't have plans to limit the number of AMVs per person, but this is subject to change.

That's an interesting idea, thanks Evil! I think it's a good idea too, though I worry that it might be a little limiting especially if the series is not one that every participant watches Still, it's a possibility we will consider (we could maybe have 3 different anime episodes from different series or something to choose from)

I'd deffinetly participate and am also for voters over judges. I'm used to make many AMV's (of varying quality) but have'nt really done any for a while so i'd like to participate in this to see if i can still make an AMV :P

Anyway, I would suggest 2 types of Contest:

1. Anime-Specific
2. Overall-Specific

Anime-Specific
Best One Piece AMV or other "Best of Anime AMV" Categories are hiere

Overall-Specific
"Best Synced, Best Idea or Best Trailer" are some of this Contest-Part


One participant can make max. 3 AMVs and 1 Collab for this AMV contest and MUST Upload on a hoster like megaupload or rapidshare.

The best thing is, that the Overall-Specific Categories can be done from the Anime-Specific Categories ( I hope you understand it^^ ).



Will Mangahelpers make her own youtube account for their winners like akrosss ? That would be great^^

Thanks for the suggestions, TemplateR! Sorry, but I don't really like the idea of anime-specific categories, simply because they alienate other series and we might end up with only one or two AMVs in a category to begin with. I mean for popular series like One Piece or Naruto, we might get a handful, but for not-as-well-known series, say, To Aru Majutsu no Index, we would potentially only have one or two submissions, possibly even none.

What we're most likely going to do is have more genre-based categories like "Best Comedy" or "Best Action". We won't have a lot of categories, though the number has not been decided yet. Users will submit their AMVs for these categories. Then, there are the generic categories such as "Most In-Sync", "Best Music", that kinda categories. ALL submissions will be considered for ALL generic categories. This means, if I make a funny AMV and submit it for the "Best Comedy" category, and I also use an awesome background song, then I could win both "Best Comedy" and "Best Music", with the same AMV

As for YouTube account, we actually do have a MH youtube account, though it's not used much. I'm not sure what you mean by "for their winners like akrosss", though, so do you mind elaborating and providing a link? We'll try to find a way for participants to upload their videos somewhere for streaming, rather than for download, as downloading increases the hassle (especially if files are large) when voters (if we are using votes) or any other user wish to watch it.

Anyway, if MH woll make an only genre-based categories like "Best Comedy" or "Best Action, then go ahead. I have only told my ideas for the contest.

Ah, okay. I see where you're coming from, but I still think it's a little restrictive because first of all, we're not expecting to get that many people submitting AMVs. I'm not very fond of the idea of separating "popular series" from the rest in genre-specific categories, seems kinda bias and I predict there will be people griping about why their favorite series doesn't get it's own category Of course, the staff will discuss, taking all your opinions into consideration, before reaching a final decision

Thanks for the Youtube link What we could do is ask participants to send us the AMVs uploaded on megaupload, mediafire etc, then the staff will upload to MangaHelpers' YT account for people to view it We'll work it out Thanks!

I think the fewer categories the better. It'd be cool to have a lot but since this is just the first contest, It'd be best to start small and build up the contest in the future. I'm sure once the first contest is finished and people see how it went, more people will try to compete and more categories could or will need to me added.

I think that what I'm going to say is already a given to everyone but let me say it so that the staffs will have heads up for it and enforce it.

It would be best for each participant to give details as to what their video consists of. With this, it would give judges & viewers a category they should view a certain video beforehand without having to actually watch to find out and still misinterpret what the video maker was trying to convey.

• The Title of the Video (Your Custom Title)
• The Date it was completed/submitted (Explains itself)
• The Genre of the video/music (Seinen, Shounen, Shoujo, Josei, Yaoi, Yuri, Ecchi, etc.)
• The type of the Music or Audio (title of music, music artist, commercial audio, etc.)
• The different types of Anime/Manga that were used (Explains itself)
• The Video/Image/Audio Editing Software used (Adobe Editing Softwares, Sony Vegas, Final Cut Pro, etc.)
• How long it took to create the video (How many hours, days, weeks, etc.)
• Any original piece of work you personally added to the video for us to acknowledge

Then a description on why you decided to join the contest and how confident you are of winning. Maybe a summary of what their video relates to - if it has a deep meaning for something.

I also want to say that it isn't always wise to use youtube as an actual source for hosting & watching videos. Youtube may see it as copy-infringement and ban the mangahelpers account. Youtube may also not allow certain viewers from a particular region of the world to view a particular video due to copyrighted production's requests.

I would suggest if Mangahelpers can create its very own video viewer where only staff member in charge of the amv contest can upload the video that were submitted. Members would then be capable of commenting on the video and not some random otakufan from the web who randomly noticed it on youtube.

Anyways, I can't wait for this contest to actually happen.

Definitely agree. Even with further editions of the competition, I think keeping a smaller (though we can add a few) number of categories is a lot more effective. We have learnt our lesson after the Anime Awards

I would love to do this as well, but the techs seem pretty busy with the vB4 upgrade (lots of bugs to squash and people want their dark themes ), I don't want to overload them with this, but I'll try to ask one of them asap.
