I came to the conclusion that all anbu are weak when using a mask. The mask itself is the problem. The mask was made to look cool, not for battle and due that their vision field is reduced, also the timing in the reaction, let me prove my point...
Kakashi left a few anbu protecting Sasuke, these were killed easily by Kabuto as can bee seen here. Kakashi discovered this and changed his Anbu mask, for one that would allow him too see more while, keeping his certain level of secrecy.
Even Orochimaru knew that he shouldn't cover his eyes that much as can be seen in his disguise as Kazekage, Hvidence.
Another Anbu was taken down by Kabuto, because he couldn't see the Kunai going towards his chest, more evidence and the most recent evidence, this one.
But what happens when an Anbu takes off this mask?, the field of vision is increased, also the timing in their reaction is increases. And like magic new abilities appear, they are not longer just Kunai users.
They not only shown greater agility and skills, but they also are capable of doing really deep analysis of their opponents during the combat, check here and here. As you see anbu members gain a boost in power one they are unmasked...
