there's also mid-autumn festival in Sinosphere countries (China, Korea, Vietnam). it's celebrated every 15th day of 8th month in Chinese calendar. I am not familiar with Oktoberfest, are these two similar?

As for my suggestion.

October: I'll throw out some ideas I've swirling in my head for next month.

October Theme Ideas

-Create a Monster that represents and is based off of a Song/Story/Urban Legend/Anime/Creepy Pasta? I can think of quite a few of those designs would be sick.
-Write a Poem expressing your darkest feelings (maybe a hard time in life, something sad, etc) and turn it into a tales grimm-esk horror story?
-Create sets of Fall, avies and siggies but here's the catch; it can only be done using fire emblem or something medieval-esk!
-Create something that is based off the four seasons, so it has to incorporate each season in its make up
-Could use those tarot cards as OMG-just realized this but- urban legends as inspiration for the arcanas! There's a thought.

I think these are meant for autumn and halloween, right? I can see 1st, 2nd, and 5th point fit halloween contest, and 3rd&4th point fit autumn/seasonal contest

As in solely food? I think it'd be fun to also make it a 'recipe' for craft making. Just my thoughts though :P I've a ton of plywood laying around and feel the need to figure something out with it. Be fun to do a autumn/Halloween craft with it or somethin.

Yes, it's recipe + pictures of the food you made kind of contest! The idea is based on a contest we have done in the past.

Crafting could be something fun to try out someday too, if more people are interested!
