Hi Karla, this is a good cause! :thumbs
I think going Green has become more prominent recently. In the past, it seems the governments are just leaving it to the environmentalists, but now, they seem to be serious in making a statement, e.g. Earth Day. It seems that the newer generation are more aware of the fact that how mankind is slowly destroying the earth, and it's really nice to see people carrying recycable bags during shopping/grocery time to save that one tree. It may not mean much, but in the long run, if we keep on doing that for many years, we'll save quite a number of trees. ^^

Come to think of it, what else can we do within our means?

Yes, I agree and thank-you!! Newer generations are more aware of the damage and impact we as humans are making on the Earth, and that's a great thing! Other simple things we can do at home are:

1. Buy Eco-Friendly products. I know Target sells some really nice eco-items from Cosmetics to furniture. Also Target sells Together.com products on their site and you can look at those items here. They even have recycled post-its!! Another cool place is healthgoods.com.

2. Find a place where you can take your recyclable trash to (if there's no pick-up in your neighborhood). Search for your nearest center at earth911.

3. Conserve! Buy Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFLs)...Did you know why the EPA, DOE and others are promoting the use of CFLs?
CFLs use significantly less energy than traditional light bulbs (75% less). If every home in America replaced just one incandescent light bulb with an ENERGY STAR qualified CFL, we would save enough energy to light more than 3 million homes and prevent greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to that of 800,000 cars. And even though CFLs contain a small amount of mercury that could ultimately end up in the environment, that amount is significantly less than the amount of mercury avoided as a result of the energy savings.

There are also practical ways of conserving like turning off lights when not needed or turning the water off while scrubbing the dishes or brushing your teeth until you need it again, and short showers (really hard for me!). Anyone else have more ideas?

Thank you for posting this, Karla! ^_^

I really appreciate when someone has this type of mentality. :) Being eco-friendly does help a lot, and will save a lot of money for some. Especially with the current recession going on, eco-friendly is the way to go! haha

Very nice thread! :tem

As for more ideas on helping the environment, I have a few daily things which can help a bit :D

1. Recycle! And no, I don't just mean the blue bins. People would be surprised that probably half the stuff fin their houses can be recycled. Most technology(batteries perhaps being the main exception) can be recycled and many retail stores can pick these up for you(I know we pick up technology at work).

2. Compost! Ok I know this isn't a given tactic for most people, but it does make a difference. Believe it or not, cow manure(or more likely just cows themselves) is one of the main producers of CO2 and greenhouse gases. Now, we have large crops of cows, but some of them are used nearly exclusively for the fertilizer industry. Many people buy fertilizer when some of them contain chemicals/pesticides and promote this industry which is in the end damaging to the environment. Composting gets rid of your organic trash as well as provide "natural" fertilizer. Don't support the poop industry! lol :XD

3. Use your car less? I know for most people this isn't feasible, but I know for others it is. Rule of thumb for me, if the destination can be reached within 30min and requires no bridge/highway(and some even don't care about highways & bridges), you can either walk, bike, skateboard or rollerblade there on a nice day. It's both good for you and the environment.
Also, public transit is your friend... >.> Idk about the rest of the world, but Quebec has both Diethanol and electric buses so really, using the bus has become an even more "eco-friendly" way of transportation. Here, buses go to all the major places you need in town and it's a lot cheaper than riding your car(not to mention you cut half the traffic for rural living people like me :D).

4. Stop using plastic shopping bags. Seriously, plastic bags are the bane of most environments >.> We've converted to using recycled shopping bags to do our groceries(and sometimes heavy shopping) an it works great! The bags are both eco-friendly and far stronger than those cheap plastic things at the supermarket. Best thing is that when they break(which only happened once so far), I can get new ones at work for free! :tem Not like they cost a lot either, most can be found for under 5$ and they last for more than one shopping session.

5. Don't throw(or at least try to throw away less :amuse)! For most communities, throwing away stuff means they just bury it and don't do anything good out of it. Garage sale the stuff that can be re-used! One man's trash is another man's treasure! This way, you don't need to buy a new desk and support the industry who cuts tree after tree to make the wooden desks.

6. Buy equitable products. While this isn't directly related to the environment, it promotes smaller native makers rather than large industries, which usually are to blame for half the ecological man-made problems to date. Buying equitable products ensures fair pay to the farmer in Mexico or the Coffee brewer in Argentina and usually helps take their children out of those factories, effectively endangering those same factories.

Those are a few off the top of my head, but I hope I've made a decent contribution :)

I've seen causes like that in malls, but they still use plastics as shopping bags. Not eco-friendly huh?

Great tips, everyone ^^

One more: unplug your electronics when not in use. Things like your TV, DVD player, cell phone charger, coffee maker, microwave, etc. consume energy even when you're not using them. And not only is doing this good for the environment, it's good for your wallet! Using less energy translates into saving money on your electric bill, which is always a good thing. :tem

Yes, it may seem like a lot of hassle to go through all those cords, but using a power strip that can be turned off with one click can help to simplify things. :amuse

Yeah and I don't know about in your countries but in Sweden, meat transport and facilities do actually pollute more CO2 than the rest of Swedens pollutions together, so we usually go out and tell the people to eat less meat, i mean it's ok if they don't wanna be vegs b/c they don't have to but the overconsumption of meat is ridiculous in Sweden. wtf's wrong with like.. quorn? (Don't know if you have quorn in the rest of the world but it's the veggie meat.)

So the easy things are to unplug, eat less meat, use more public transports and don't fly unless you have too, and like, use common sense and recycle.

It's ridiculously easy to be eco-friendly but unfortunately people are too lazy... Think of the responsibility we have for the 3rd world. We pollute and they take the consequences. When we stand there with our kids asking us why the f*ck we were so selfish I can say that at least I tried.

Off to eat veggie food and then take the bus to town for some shopping, jay it's fun to be eco-friendly.

Wheeee!
