When TG anime started, I thought that it was the best opportunity to get into the series because I heard many good things about it. It turned out to be a terrible idea... That anime sucked camel balls and I lost all my appetite and ended up dropping the manga when Re came out... I could be wrong, but I think that reading the manga is the best way to start Berserk. The movies and anime come after.
Err there's no difference really, the anime can be seen as the appetizer. I watched the anime first, and by the end of it I was screaming for more. Actually the fucked up end makes you want to read the manga even more, because you're in complete denial at the absolute horror that was the eclipse. So I wasn't even salty about it, it made me want to read the manga even more, and I started from the beginning and when I was done I read it religiously afterwards, rereading it a bunch of times.
I really don't see what's so bad about the first anime, sure they didn't include Puck or SK, but everything else managed to remain true to the manga. The fact they didn't go past the golden age can be explained by various things, budget among other things. And let's face it Berserk is a niche kind of manga, it's not supposed to be mainstream so it can't get a long running anime which is something only shounens do, rarely seinens, and if they do it can be disappointing like TG.
Not gonna shit on TG but I really don't find it as good as Berserk. Berserk is leagues away, but then again I just watched the first episode of TG and dropped it, didn't like it at all. Those zombie/ghoul stories bore me to death.

I will agree but it was the original anime that I bought at some bootleg chinese shop that got me hooked. And when I started buying the manga volumes, oh boy was I hooked in permanently.

Maybe if someone has no idea about anything in the manga....
I agree with shin that the anime was kinda slow and little heavy on dialog....i thought fights and the overall concept was cool...but at the time i wanted more fighting,gore,etc....

It wasnt until i read the manga that i could appreciate the anime....reading the blackswordman arc really opened your eyes to what guts was dealing with before you even meet griffith.
To me,the relationship build up in the anime made more sense....because miura was showing how deep griffth fucked over guts, caska and the BotH.

Guess what im trying to say is my 1st watch i didnt know how important guts and griffith's stories had to be fleshed out.
I never understood why they just didnt animate it from the start of the manga instead of skipping the 1st arc.

What first arc? They did use some of it, the Snake count is part of the "first" arc,aka the blackswordsman arc.
Then there's just the stuff with Slug count which can easily be placed afterwards.

But make no mistake, In the timeline the first arc is the Golden age arc, it's just Miura being fancy and having the story start with a flashback. I personally liked that they didn't properly introduce the God hand in the anime early on, unlike the manga during the fight against Slug count. They kept things pretty much secret, only hinting a little about the God hand which imo works.
You don't want to know everything from the start. Honestly it sounds more like nitpicking than anything else.
Also lol about the dialogues, considering that they're taken from the manga, word to word most of the time I find that funny. And I think most people don't understand what the Golden age is about. It IS mostly about the relationship between Guts, Griffith, Caska and the rest of the BoTH. It's not so much about the magic stuff, or the hints about the Eclipse. Even if you read the manga first, nothing can prepare you to the absolute mindfuck the Eclipse is, not even after you see all the stuff with Zodd and Wyald. You can guess that it's something unnatural, monstruous, but to actually see Griffith go ahead with it, and sacrifice all the BoTH, and see them die it's just too much. Nothing can prepare you for that.

I understood the relationship between Guts and Griffith without the first chapters of the blackswordsman arc, who btw doesn't explain it. You can only guess that Guts in hunted down by demonic forces, and he in turn is hunting them down, culminating with him meeting Femto again. But there's no given explanation at that point about why Guts hates the God hand. That's where the Golden age arc comes in.
The rest of the chapters with Slug count etc only establish how fucked up Guts character is, since he was pretty violent in the first chapters. And we get more of the lore explained, with demons, behelits and sacrifices getting showcased. It doesn't at all explain all of the relationship between Guts and Griffith, it slightly touches upon it but you can't comprehend it without the rest of the Golden age arc.
So in that regard the anime managed to do the manga justice, by fleshing out that relationship which is essential to understand Guts' actions when he becomes known as the blackswordsman.

What I do understand though is how it can be seen as misleading. Since in the manga there's a bunch of chapters that shows all the gore and horror associated with demons, it's easier to guess what kind of manga we're dealing with. The anime not so much, many people I've known who watched it really loved the medieval setting, and the fights etc, but they were rebuked by the dark fantasy/horror elements that came later on in the anime, with the eclipse. Maybe that's what you meant.

The manga is coming back! That was quick this time!! :)

BTW, where do you guys think they will stop with the anime?

The first anime roughly showed 100 chapters of Berserk (including the stuff that was cut from the manga).
The convictions arcs add up to 82 chapters, so I think they will most likely show that whole arc and stop around chapter 176.

Praise the old gods and the new! Berserk will be back. I expected July, but it's the end of June, same thing.

Not sure what to make of the monthly thing. If it's just like last time, then Miura could still go into hiatus regardless.

I'm betting on the end of the conviction arc, with the end being Griffith getting reborn again.

But I guess they could add the stuff with Schierke, which happens much later than that.Dunno if they said how many episodes this new anime will have.

According to Wiki, it should be 24 episodes.

24 huh....hmm it's hard to see them include all the stuff with Schierke etc.Unless they cram multiple chapters in one episode, which isn't ideal judging from other anime titles that did that.

24 episodes won't be enough unless they do some amazing work with the pacing. I mean something like 0% fillers and only manga dialogue and scenes. So maybe it's a multi-season thing.

There's no filler in seinens, only shounens(and really long running animes in general), and since it's just 24 episodes then it's pretty unlikely they'd include fillers.:edu
No if anything and they try to cram all that stuff in 24 episodes it will be bad, and they'll end up skipping a lot of stuff. So it makes more sense it's just the blackswordsman+conviction arc.
You can check here for the list of arcs, and where they start and end: http://berserk.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Story_Arcs
It's unlikely they'll add the millenium falcon, which has the introduction of Shierke etc.

I agree, but I didn't mean the shounen-like fillers. I meant the long pauses and dramatic stare-downs and unnecessary flashbacks and extended dialogues that don't exist in the original work.
But yeah, I really don't think that they'll cram all of that material in 24 episodes because of two things: the first one is that Miura is involved in making this and I don't think that he'll allow it (I imagine he was the one who pushed for an anime instead of more movies because of the missed scenes and material). The second reason is that most successful anime have multiple seasons nowadays... It would be a total waste if they make a single season and go to sleep.

I think 24 episode should be enough for the conviction arc.
There are chapters that are just fighting, so those one can be "crammed" pretty easily together.

The second season if it is done will be much harder.
Especially if they want to do the Millenium Falcon arc in a single season.

Err I'm still not sold on the animation part. *sigh*
It'll be fine.
I'm alright with how Gust was animated.
It seems better than the movie, IMO.

It's only those ugly ass CGI skeleton that I find disappointing.
I feel like all the demons/spirits will be animated that way to make them feel more eerie or something like that...

Yeah it's rather underwhelming. Everything that is character animated is not that good, but the backgrounds and some of the effects (like when Guts is swinging his sword) are ok. I think as long as things aren't moving it looks ok.:XD
