But there also the possibility of a split season again like Season 3, with Season 4 Part 2 coming in April 2021, so that could give us two or three extra volumes before the anime ends.

The only for the series to end in chapter 132 would be if the author makes shorter chapters.
That’s something I just don’t see happening. At the current rate and current pages count per chapter the volumes will all have the chapters I specified above. The might I added is just because these chapters haven’t been released yet and no one knows what the author really plans to do like making larger chapters or ending the series before
My counting mistake, but anyway it should end in chapter 132 to cover all the plot points in my opinion.

Doubtful, split cour normally happens when the series still continues. It is better to end it when people still have it fresh in their memories.2 cour anime will finish the series.

Yeah I think the final season will be two cour, that should be plenty enough to finish animating everything. And that would also reflect what the studio did for season 1, 32+ chapters in 24 episodes

Now it's time to discuss Bessatsu Shonen Magazine, in my opinion, it may actually be harder to survive long-term than either Weekly Shonen Jump or Weekly Young Jump. As you can see by Shingeki no Kyojin's positioning, it becomes pretty apparent that BSM's TOCs aren't necessarily an indication of a series popularity. When trying to analyze BSM's 2019 performance, I will at the very least give the editors some credit in that they are certainly not afraid to try shaking things up in pretty radical ways surprisingly frequently. Unless your name is Shingeki no Kyojin, you could pretty much be axed at any random point in time. There were several series that concluded this year that I was originally feeling pretty confident would last at least another year, and I was particularly shocked that Shourai-teki ni Shindekure and Tenju no Kuni didn't end up with some form of anime. Araburu Kisetsu no Otome-domo yo both getting a shockingly high quality anime adaptation and hen subsequently ending also caught me a bit off-guard, but mainly by the fact that its anime was usually pretty excellently done.

During 2019, BSM started a whopping 11 new series, and since there were also 2 series that had started in 2018's issue 12, there was certainly never a shortage of young blood in the magazine. However, one of those series was unlucky enough to have been axed right before it could live to see the light of 2020: Toukyou Youhei Kabushikigaisha. Even more surprisingly, there were 12 series that concluded their runs during 2019, plus an additional series that was transferred elsewhere to continue its tale: Akazukin no Ookami Deshi (another one that I thought would've done better than it did). Issues 2, 11 and 12 were the only issues during 2019 that didn't start any new series, while issues 3 and 7 were the only ones where nothing either ended or transferred elsewhere. Maybe it's more common in other magazines that I didn't analyze, but only having 1 issue where something didn't either start or end is pretty crazy to me.

Despite the fact that axes were flying left and right this year, there were still 11 series that managed to score perfect attendance for 2019: Shingeki no Kyojin, Arslan Senki, UQ Holder! -Mahou Sensei Negima! 2, Shougi no Watanabe-kun, Real Account, 29-sai Dokushin Chuuken Boukensha no Nichijou, 100-man no Inochi no Ue ni Ore wa Tatteiru, Sekai ka Kanojo ka Erabenai, Fate/Grand Order: Turas Réalta, Mizu wa Umi ni Mukatte Nagareru, and Aka no Grimoire. It's interesting to note that the majority of these series are at least several years old. As for the winner of the most color pages contest, that honor actually gets split five-ways for the following series which each received 3 color pages during the year: Tomodachi Game, Real Account, Shourai-teki ni Shindekure, Fate/Grand Order: Turas Réalta, and surprisingly Maoh's Unannounced Inspection of the Dungeon. I'm curious to see who'll get this honor next year since 2 of these series are already concluded, and if early volume performance has anything to say about it, I'd be shocked if Maoh lasts another year.

Looking forward into 2020, I am certainly expecting to see just about as many axes hitting the proverbial chopping block as the majority of the new series being released are running into immediate sales troubles. Surprisingly, the majority of series that started their serializations this past year either just barely made it onto the weekly top 500 chart or just completely failed to show up. Several failed to even make it on the daily top 500 list on their first day of sale! As a result, most of the newest series will probably won't make it to the end of the tunnel to see the bright light of 2021. I honestly can't wait to see what's going to happen to BSM once Shingki no Kyojin ends fairly soon. It's going to be a substantially massive hit to the magazine, but I have faith that it'll be able to pull through somehow. I'm not sure how it'll do it, but before BSM finds its next ultra-hit, it first has to find something that can be called a moderate success. Fingers crossed that BSM can finally get some stability in 2020!

Ni no Kuni to end in Issue #2. Fairy Gone has ended after 9 chapters in this issue.

UPDATE: Freaks Freak Company to also end in Issue #2. The bloodbath continues. (Source: WSJ Discord)

I can't say that Mizu wa Umi ni Mukatte Nagareru is completely safe. This is Bessatsu Shounen Magazine after all. It should've done at least better than Tenju no Kun to be completely safe. That being said this is basically the best performing series since Tenju no Kuni which debuted in 11th issue of 2017. It should be safe.

Looking at the daily list it will make shoseki weekly list for one more week, and it will reach 9k in 14 days. It is a decent growth from volume 1. Of course, shoseki estimates, and the way I am calculating them isn't the most reliable things and it can be wrong. I doubt that's the case though. As always I am looking forward to the monthly list to confirm it.

I would be very surprised if Aka no Grimoire doesn't end with 4 volumes. That would mean Bessatsu Shounen Magazine has become considerably softer against new series. Though looking at the cancellations lately that doesn't seem to be the case.

Mizu wa Umi ni Mukatte Nagareru is safe. On the case it ends early, it would be completely the author intentions.
Her previous work were only 2 volumes and still is really good and got a Taisho nomination.
Mizu wa Umi also is in top 10 of Kono Manga ga Sugoi so I am sure it is fine.

I'm curious if Tenju no Kuni was forced to end or it's a natural ending. It seems to sell enough, although not much, and the premise seems that it would fit a short series. But who knows, Bessatsu cancelled a ton of stuff recently, right?

They canceled Fairy Gone and Tokyo Mercenary Soldiers recently. Ni No Kuni and Freaks Freak Company also got the axe, ending in the next issue. All had poor sales.

Real Account and Shouraiteki ni Shinde kure seemed to have ended naturally with CPs.

Tenju no Kuni is in the same box with Araburu Kisetsu no Otomedomo yo (which even got an anime), yet neither got CPs.
Guess we will never know.

Tenju no Kuni sales before volume 5
v01 - 2018/03 - | 3,120 (03) | 7,440 (10) |
v02 - 2018/08 - | 5,060 (04) | 8,772 (11) |
v03 - 2019/01 - | 7,198 (05) | 10,282 (12) |
v04 - 2019/06 - | 4,688 (03) | 9,748 (10) |

Tenju no Kuni' sales were ok, but not that good and It didn't show much growth. Saleswise it could've gone for a few more volumes, but not much more. Without an anime or serious award recognition, big growth in sales wasn't very likely. Since BSM is a very harsh magazine, they would've canceled it at the first sign of sales drops.

Assuming it has a satisfying ending, either author decided to end it or editors told him to wrap up. But I don't think that means the story was supposed to be 5 volumes always. I think if sales were really high, mangaka would've extended the story somehow. Maybe not for years, but at least for 8-10 volumes. I really don't think mangakas start a series in major manga magazines (like sunday, magazine, etc.) with only 4-5 volumes in mind. That just too short.

Either way, I think this is the smart way to handle modest selling series. There's no point to extend to story needlessly and ruin it, for a series really doesn't sell much. There are examples like Kanata no Astra and Taisho Wotome Otogibanashi. Both series grew a lot in sales for final volumes, and probably sold a lot of copies after ending. Maybe not as much as those two, but Tenju no Kuni also showed some slight growth in the final volume.

About Araburu Kisetsu no Otomedomo yo, I believe the author of that manga is a very popular anime writer. I think an anime was always happening for it, and that was why they've kept it around. I am guessing she planned manga well enough, so it could conclude with anime.

Also, Real Account and Shouraiteki ni Shinde kure were big hits for Kodansha. It makes sense they did get color pages. Araburu and Tenju no Kuni not so much. Even if they ended naturally, it is not surprising they did not get color pages.

Talking about Real Account, wasn't that supposed to get an live-action movie? What happened to that? there doesn't seem to be any news about it after the announcement in January 2018.
