Cana had so much wasted story potential
Alright, I made this thread cause the Mashima Awards reminded me that Cana’s development could have been handled better by Mashima.
I know Cana isn’t one of the main characters so her screen/panel time is limited but team B and especially Cana had so much story potential imo.
Appearance:
Cana is the most human character in Fairy Tail. For starters, her appearance is more real, she doesn’t have pink or green hair, she has natural brown hair and her eye color has been inconsistent through the series but vary from blue to brown.
Personality:
As a kid Cana was mature and melancholic. She would often show a big sister's personality (she still does that with Wendy).
Growing up, her sadness turned into frustration ledding her to drink all the time and thus exhibiting a more cheerful and confident personality. But that confidence is fake. She was unable to tell Gildarts he was her dad all those years and though she can get a bit teasing or flirting, she only does that with the girls and was unable to ever confess her love for Macao ( Mashima stated that she was in love with him in the beginning of the series) and quickly gave up. Moreso, she was totally clueless when one of the Blue Pegasus guys was flirting with her in The Grand Magic Games.
After failing to become an S mage 4 times she wanted to leave Fairy Tail believing she was unfitting and not good enough.
Even after Gildarts finds he was her dad, she got a little better but her confidence still had a long way to go but Mashima stopped caring about her.
Friends:
Somehow it seems that apart from her drinking buddies who are old enough to be her dads, all her best friends leave. As a kid her best friend was Gray but Gray grew to be closer to the main team and especially Natsu, his rival.
After that, she seemed to have grown closer to Lucy, even telling her she wanted to leave Fairy Tail but Lucy is also part of the main team and mostly hangs out with them (and Levy).
For a little while she also seemed to have bonded with Juvia but Juvia is always busy stalking Gray.
Though she was stated to have Gray as a best friend as a kid she had few interactions with him during the series.
Finally she had a great relationship and very funny dynamic with Mavis, with Mavis even stating she reminded her of her best friend….but we know what happened to Mavis in the end…
Power:
Her card magic is very versatile and Mashima could have worked that better, he could have played with elements or even with cards like "Death" for raw power or "High priest" making her senses and instincts better for enhancing magic.
Fairy Glitter: this power looks closer to Gildarts type of power and really fits her. I think it could have been really interesting seeing her developing that power or even being trained by Gildarts. Maybe she could even find a way to combine magic card with Fairy Glitter.
Mavis stated during The Great Magic Games that Cana’s latent power was very high. Considering she is the daughter of the strongest mage in Fairy Tail that seems very likely but Mashima never did anything with it.
