there is something that has been bugging me about cana's card dimension in fairy tail how does it work because it seems like with that ability you could essentially defeat anyone and all you have to do is trap them in a card like cana did with the members of fairy tail

You are wrong, the guy only manages to make the cut but it is impossible for the escape, Erza in the manga clearly says he managed to escape thanks to the attacks of Ikaruga made a rip in the dimensional chart.

Therefore, it is not that Erza could break it by itself, I need Ikaruga and his magic sword to escape.
