With the official release today, One Piece chapters are at 990. Which means we are down to the last 9 chapters before reaching the 1000 chapter milestone. The list of series to reach said milestone is by no means a short one (you can view the list HERE) but it would just further increase its legacy.

The series is currently on track to reach it's 1000th chapter by December( a predicted schedule can be seen HERE); there aren't any more magazine breaks but Oda is likely to take a handful more breaks between now and then.

I don't doubt Oda and the publishers at WSJ will have something special planned for this occasion, from covers to colourspreads, to congratulatory messages from notable mangakas. From yourselves as readers, what would you like to see included in this chapter and how it's promoted?

I wanted to make this thread so that we, as a community can celebrate the achievement but also reminisce about the journey to getting here. Some questions I want to ask everyone:

  • How did you discover the series? Was it a friend or just randomly?
  • Did you start with the anime or manga?
  • Do you recall the first chapter/episode you saw?
  • What about the series do you particularly like?
  • What is/are your favourite art pages/quotes from the series?

If you have any more questions to add, just add them along; I'm just more interested to see how you all came on this journey.

Other than that, any information regarding this occasion will be updated here.

How did you discover the series? Was it a friend or just randomly?

My brother used to buy some manga volumes. I started reading it way back on 2002.

Did you start with the anime or manga?

Manga.

Do you recall the first chapter/episode you saw?

First one.

What about the series do you particularly like?

Too many things.

What is/are your favourite art pages/quotes from the series?

Hard to choose. I really liked the Shabondy, Impel Down and Marine Ford parts.

  • How did you discover the series? Was it a friend or just randomly?
Had gotten into the other "big 2" at the time, Bleach and Naruto. Had seen OP english subs and decided "not for me" because of how bad the voices were. I think the first episode I had seen was the Baratie battle with the cooks vs everyone, and it made no sense to me and I couldn't take the voices. A few years later, after seeing it talked about so much, I decided to give it another try, started at the beginning with the manga, then the anime. This time I "got it".
  • Did you start with the anime or manga?
Manga, but both pretty much at the same time. Like I said, the english sub was the worst way to get into it.
  • Do you recall the first chapter/episode you saw?
See above, Baratie battle, mostly the chefs fighting, did not like it at all.
  • What ab.out the series do you particularly like?
As much as I get annoyed with a lot of later flashbacks, I love how fully fleshed out every character is. The world is fully lived in
  • What is/are your favourite art pages/quotes from the series?
For gags, my favorite page is this:

"Who did you think it was?"
"Michael and Hoichael from the back alleys"

This was followed by a blink and you'll miss it appearance of Michael and Hoichael in chapter 432 to complete the bizarre but to me hilarious joke/gag:

For non gags, the obvious I think - Strawhats raising their fists with the "X" as they leave Alabasta, Strawhats posing on Ennies Lobby roof, "Shoot down that flag". Mostly stuff with the whole crew.

How did you discover the series? Was it a friend or just randomly?
Had a friend who recommended it to me back in 2010. Don't keep in touch with him anymore, but this series is still with me.
Did you start with the anime or manga?
Manga. Had the cleanest artwork at that time and found it easy and fun to read.
Do you recall the first chapter/episode you saw?
Of course. Its the first chapter that got me hooked into it so badly. The scene where Shanks lost his arm and Luffy crying gave me chills.
What about the series do you particularly like?
First would be action, kinda lame I know. I just like the characters growing in strength and make a name for themselves.
The other would include the mysteries ofc. However, most are still unknown even though we are nearing 1K chapters.
What is/are your favourite art pages/quotes from the series?
“Pirates are evil? The Marines are righteous? These terms have always changed throughout the course of history! Kids who have never seen peace and kids who have never seen war have different values! Those who stand at the top determine what's wrong and what's right! This very place is neutral ground! Justice will prevail, you say? But of course it will! Whoever wins this war becomes justice!”
― Donquixote Doflamingo

“When do you think people die? When they are shot through the heart by the bullet of a pistol? No. When they are ravaged by an incurable disease? No. When they drink a soup made from a poisonous mushroom!? No! It’s when… they are forgotten.”
― Dr. Hiriluk One Piece

How did you discover the series? Was it a friend or just randomly?
Sort of randomly, I was on holiday in Belgium in 2005 and watching an anime/manga oriented channel called....Mangas. They had all sorts of great shows running on there, and what was great was some of the shows were in japanese but with french subs, but I digress. So I started just watching it to pass time but then I really got hooked into it, it was around Arlong Park arc.

Did you start with the anime or manga?
Anime. I watched it casually because even back then the number of episodes were daunting and I was studying. But once I started to have a bit more time, I just binge watched it all and around....2008 I was all caught up and just eager to see what was going on. I didn't know much about the manga at all at that point, so imagine my surprise when I found out how much further ahead it was! It was around that time that I joined here, looking for spoilers and places to read the chapters.

Do you recall the first chapter/episode you saw?
Not the exact episode but for the anime it would be somewhere around Arlong Park and for the manga it would be Thriller Bark.

What about the series do you particularly like?
How detailed the world that Oda has built is, the underlying themes behind each arc and how some of them are still relevant in our societies today. Speaking of details, I love the application of history( particularly japanese lore), looking for easter eggs and how even the most minute of things could be traced back to somewhere and/or become important so many years down the line. The story has some great pay-offs. Plus the humour; particularly pre-timeskip.

What is/are your favourite art pages/quotes from the series?
I'll come back to this one, I have a few.

great idea for the thread goldb...

How did you discover the series? Was it a friend or just randomly?
It actually started with an online Naruto community where someone posted which is a better series.. someone made some great points why OP is better, and pirates are cooler, i thought i should start on it... it took me a while to acknowledge that its a good series, till Nami joining i would say. after alabasta i started liking the fights and found it comparable to Naruto and after enes lobby, just became my favorite. I am not an avid anime fan, havent still read or seen any of the most popular series but OP is one i dont see myself stop consuming.. even it goes on for another 20 years.

Did you start with the anime or manga?
Started with the anime,

Do you recall the first chapter/episode you saw?
episode 1.
What about the series do you particularly like?
One Piece is one of the few animes that gets emotions right. Even the way the word 'nakama' is so unique, it means multiple things while still meaning friends... anyways, my favorite things are
emotional scenes
Adventure,
world building

What is/are your favourite art pages/quotes from the series?
"Miracles happen only to those who have the will to carry on" - Ivankov to Bon Clay while Luffy was going through the treatment..

"he took that small flame of his life and turned it into a fire that engulfed the entire world.. I havent laughed so much, cried so much, or drank so much"...
This is Rayleigh while describing Roger's last words.... love these two lines...

"nothing happened"... zoro...

1.Television, the French dub on Mangas.
2.Anime then manga.
3.The first episode probably, I am not sure.
4.Not sure if I can explain it clearly. But the writing is more solid compared to many battle shonen in general. The comedy is nice too. I still like One Piece but it was much better before the timeskip IMO.
5.My favorite arcs are Enies Lobby and Thriller Bark I think, Alabasta as well. There are too many good moments for a list. Would be very hard to do.

How did you discover the series? Was it a friend or just randomly?
My mom was making me learn to read Japanese (her native language) when we moved to Japan for a period. She'd buy me manga to practice. One Piece was one of them (among Doraemon, Dragon Ball which I already liked from the anime, Slam Dunk and a few others). One Piece was the only one to really snag me long term.

Did you start with the anime or manga?
Manga. I did end up watching the anime around 2005 or so.

Do you recall the first chapter/episode you saw?
Romance Dawn. Ben Beckman putting out a cigarette in someone's eye/face appealed to young me. Was pretty pulled in by the whole "Pirates don't take shit from anyone" aura.

What about the series do you particularly like?
For the most part there aren't a lot of predictable elements to One Piece. It's pretty rare that anyone accurately predicts what's going to happen when it isn't obvious (e.g Luffy is not going to defeat Big Mom on WCI was an obvious prediction. Luffy is Garp's grandson was not. Ace was Roger's son was not. Ace is going to actually die was not)

What is/are your favourite art pages/quotes from the series?

"Just who the hell do you think I am? Here on the Grand Line, there are plenty of rookies who are all talk, just like you, Straw-Hat Luffy"
This was one of the most insanely badass moments in One Piece. Luffy practically danced through East Blue. It was really obvious that other than Smoker, Luffy outmatched everyone he came across. Oda had him depicted as nearly unbeatable. Then bam, Crocodile, one of the most badass villains in manga-history appears and knocks him down a few notches. It was also the fact that Crocodile defeated Luffy so easily (until he didn't). The only comparable moment in the series for me was when Luffy got defeated by Kaido, but it wasn't as epic because it was pretty expected.
Favorite arcs are Alabasta, and Enies Lobby.

One thing on the march to 1000 I have to note - not a single one of my favourite arcs has happened post time skip. Truthfully, Marineford battle is there as well, just wasn't my thing. Wano might be the best post time skip arc, but even then the pacing has faltered, mostly in the pointless and overlong Oden flashback. Other than that one it's been decently paced I think.

I share similar feelings @thedude... Most of our favorite moments are pre time skip. However, i do feel the WCI island arc is super underrated. It may not do what pre time skip did, but it definitely does a great job of scaling Yonko's well. BMP look more like a country than the beast pirates, even though in strength the beast pirates are probably stronger...

I just saw the entire anime available on netflix recently, it kinda gave me a newfound appreciation for scaling and consistency for OP. the scaling is not just power, but adventure as well...

For instance, East Blue is supposed to be the weakest of the seas... and Don Krieg was considered as the strongest there, someone who was relatively easier to beat. But the arc that followed consisted of pirates from the grandline / new world, which acted like a teaser for the events to come. Crocodile was hte the first credible villain and if you see the fights again, we also see that Crocodile heavily underestimated luffy. He also had an impact on Luffy, with a certain line that goes something like this:
"in the grandline, pirates lives are always on the line, so there's no such thing as a clean way of fighting"... this was something that definitely Luffy understands now and has considers when he battles.
Not to mention that Crocodile is still an enigma, and perhaps given us a glimpse of the first case of awakening with his right hand....

Also, it was mentioned that pirates return from the grandline and the only known way of doing that would be to return by passing the calm belt. East Blue and South Blue are the oceans close to paradise part and will face pirates from there more often, so west blue and north blue will have pirates from the new-world. While we dont see an exact trend, east blue clearly shows very few strong pirates other than Luffy's crew and his family.
South Blue has Kidd..North Blue has the worst of the 4 seas, but we also see a royal family there which seems to be insanely strong, unlike other royal families.

The best part of OP's writing is the foreshadowing....

  • How did you discover the series? Was it a friend or just randomly?

4 kids dub... I thought nothing of it and let it play as background noise before yugioh came on. had a catchy opening though.

1. How did you discover the series? Was it a friend or just randomly?

I thought the One Piece art in the anime was crappy and Naruto and Bleach had more of the style I was more used to when I was a kid. I then went on to Berserk and other mangas. Then around 15 while playing broodwar someone I frequently played with just hella nerded One Piece at me. I thought I will give One Piece a go. I never looked back.

2. Did you start with the anime or manga?

Manga. I don't watch the anime.

3. Do you recall the first chapter/episode you saw?

Chapter 1

4. What about the series do you particularly like?

Too impossible to even put in words, I will not even attempt to answer this question. I think some of you guys know what I mean.

5. What is/are your favourite art pages/quotes from the series?

See above.

6. If you have any more questions to add, just add them along; I'm just more interested to see how you all came on this journey.

I honestly hope this story never ends. It just keep getting better. It is too bad there is only 20% left 😭😭

The official countdown has begun on social media pages, with the hashtag #ONEPIECE1000LOGS. Guessing we're counting in order of how they joined the crew (Jinbe, Brook, Franky, Robin, Chopper, Sanji, Usopp, Nami, Zoro, Luffy)

Do you think it's possible that the reason for all the breaks lately is to stagger the chapters so we get 1000 perfectly as the last chapter of 2020?

It's definitely possible, whether or not it was intentional I couldn't say with certainty.

My own guess is that they worked out the amount of breaks the series would likely have and saw that ch1000 would definitely happen this year but with the corona virus forcing additional magazine breaks, it's sorta nicely stretched things to the end of the year-ish.
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

Lowkey that's actually good, I'm always expecting dubs to just butcher whatever the original product is. In french, they had the original "We Are" theme but added "Memories" to play behind the opening narration, but slightly more upbeat.

Yeah, maybe half-planned. The only other reason I could think of for the breaks is that the art of the series is becoming a lot more crazy. Dragon-Kaido has to be pretty tough to draw when he appears multiple times in a chapter. Sulong Minks as well. Plus if Luffy gets a new Gear 4 form I'm sure that'll be pretty elaborate. Kidd's fruit is also pretty detailed. Comparing it to previous arcs it seems like the art may be a bit harder these days.
