i am not sure if oda can make the chapter 1000 as he planned (end of this year). But i guess it would also be hyped to start the new year 2021, which can be argued as the new decade, with the chapter 1000.

Jump haven't announced any deviation from their plans to do so for end of this year, so it looks like it's still a possibility. In which case it'll mean Oda's breaks will be amended and take into account this one impromptu break due to illness.

from what i remember, if oda still aims to get the thousandth chapter in this year, he cannot get more than one break (which is already scheduled after chapter 992). I just think it's pretty unrealistic to expect it in this year since oda takes a break at least once a month

We're currently in the week that Oda's break was scheduled, but yes, you're right, he would have to only take one more break until the end of the year, which based on his break pattern, seems unlikely. My optimism comes from the fact that WSJ hasn't yet announced anything about that. I guess they may just be trying to avoid unrest until the time comes (which is likely to affect sales and bring with it a lot of negative comments).

If he takes his breaks as scheduled, it'll look something like this:

992 - 17 OCT
993 - 26 OCT
994 - 2 NOV

BREAK - 9 NOV

995 - 16 NOV
996 - 23 NOV

BREAK - 30 NOV

997 - 7 DEC
998 - 14 DEC
999 - 21 DEC

WSJ BREAK - 28 DEC

1000 - 4 JAN

He could do 4 chapters then break but we've not had one of those since last year ( ch955-958).

I don't think so. The countdown started at 10 and there's 10 strawhats, so Luffy should be chapter 999, with 1 chapter left to 1000.

I don't know if chapter 1000 will have any special artwork.

Not only because of how much space it would take in the magazine but also how long it would take him to create a 100 page chapter; which is 5 chapters worth of content. Consider that it takes him a week to complete one chapter and he's usually 2-3 chapters ahead of the actual publication, he'd still have to sacrifice a lot of time and the very little sleep he already takes.

Guys, I was thinking, what if Oda made the chapter 1001 the special one like he did with chapter 601?

For the ones that wasn’t around in that time, in the time skip Oda made the manga comeback in chapter 600, but only in chapter 601 he made a special color spread. Because it’s the mark of 601 chapters, the first “one” after the time skip.
