I still don't see this war as cooler than Marineford (yes, this is purely subjective), and I don't think the marines will come, since they're busy with the shichibukai and all, so either it just gets more epic on its own, or CP0 makes an entrance, or freaking Dragon joins the fray.

Or Enel descends from the moon with CoA and a robot army.

I wanted to make this thread so that we, as a community can celebrate the achievement but also reminisce about the journey to getting here. Some questions I want to ask everyone:

How did you discover the series? Was it a friend or just randomly?

Did you start with the anime or manga?

Do you recall the first chapter/episode you saw?

What about the series do you particularly like?

What is/are your favourite art pages/quotes from the series?

If you have any more questions to add, just add them along; I'm just more interested to see how you all came on this journey.

I found One Piece through 4Kids and I do not regret it, I watched it until Rogue Town. I loved their dub no matter what anyone says. I prefer to watch the anime in English Dub.
I started watching OP through 4Kids during the Arlong Park Arc, which was my favorite at that time. But then with 4Kids, not all the episodes were showing so I ended up forgetting about it around 2005.
Until I rediscovered the manga, at that time it was in Amazon Lily Arc with Luffy meeting Hancock, around 2008. I decided to start over and read it from the beginning to up to date at that time right before Luffy entered Impel Down.
And that is when I started the 1 chapter per week reading. I wish I could forget my memory about OP and read it from the beginning. Its been 12 years since I "started" reading OP a chapter a week.

Honestly, and it could be an unpopular opinion, but the best part of the series is the PRE TIME SKIP. I enjoyed reading OP because of the mini gags in between adventures and the art was actually pretty cool. Now, I think the series has gone down hill, it's still my favorite and I will read it until the END, but OP today is no longer the same OP it was during Alabasta or Enies Lobby.
The art today looks so blurry and rushed. I dont even want to talk about the Wano animation...
I cant think of a qoute/art page right now, but it is definetly before/during Enies Lobby.

At the pace Oda is going with the whole series, I am disappointed. I dont think he can properly end OP in 4 years. It is being rushed.

1. Back then, when they encountered a formidable opponent with a seemingly broken ability, they must went creative about how to defeat them: "A guy who can split his body apart? Tie him?" "Guy with super-speed? Stay in one place and hit where they almost got you!" "A merman dragging me underwater? Let's fill his lungs with air!" "A guy trapped our friends in a giant candle cake? Just melt the candle away!" "A guy can turn into sand? Squirt him to make him solid!" "A god who use electricity? Rubber is immune" "A guy who can shoot a beam that can make anything slower? Reflect the beam with mirror!". Nowadays it's just DBZ-style of "My haki is stronger than you".
2. The contrived coincidence was just crazy after the time-skip. Something minor like Kuro's crew once battled Morgan or Luffy's and Zoro's aims revealed as rivals (Shanks and Mihawk) are okay, but the writer making it's revealed that all original Yonkos except Shanks being part of the same crew along with Shiki and Captain John really grind my gears. It puts one of One Piece's biggest charm for me, which is its Battle Royale setting between factions came off becoming kinda trivial since now we can narrow them down to just ex-Roger's crew, ex-Xebec's crew, and World Government while Wild Cards like Crocodile or Moria will most likely be fodder to increase Blackbeard Pirates' strength.

Really hit the nail on the head with this one. Both points were things we used to say we feared would happen back before the timeskip, too. Around the time it was revealed Ace was Roger's son and more and more connections like that were made between characters, some of us grew wary that the effect of those reveals would wear off, and sure enough, instead they have made the vast world-building feel smaller.

And the first point also. I really hope more focus is put on the unique fighting styles again in the last parts of the series, because haki definitely has taken some of the life and fun out of OP fights, which used to be unpredictable and innovative.

1. I don't think there is any fight in which Haki mattered the way you describe it. And while I do get the difference in style as well, calling One Piece DBZ style is just wrong, One Piece is still the antithesis of DBZ concept.

In DB, the main character gets stronger so new villains get invented, that are always stronger than the previous ones and the main character, who in turn becomes stronger again. This can be repeated forever.

In One Piece it is the other way around. The top end is set from the very start (Roger), and the main character climbs up a pre-set framework. This is a finite concept.

That's why at the start, Oda had to create very creative ways to make Luffy win against opponents that he was by any means inferior to. However as time goes by, Luffy becomes just as strong or even stronger than them, and as such obviously is now also able to fight like them.

With your idea of keeping "the creative fights" forever, that would either mean no growth for the main character at all or ridiculous powerlevel inflation in regards to the villains. Even way worse than Dragon Ball's actually.

2. I don't think that's an example of contrived coincidence. There really is nothing improbable here. We already know what Rocks was all about, he wanted to become the "King of the World", which requires power. So it makes senses that he recruited the strongest for it, such as Charlotte Linlin, the Empress of Tottoland, who was already 500M belly as a child, preceding the Rocks Pirates by far.

I think you make the mistake to think of the Rocks Pirates like an actual Pirate crew like the Strawhats or Roger Pirates and that it was the start of their careers. They were not. They were a gathering of strong people around a leader they all followed for a reason we don't know as of yet, and after this leader's death, nothing did bind them together anymore.
