Jellal X Laxus is a more close battle than Laxus fans can admit. Jellal is far more versatile, knowing tons of spells, which is relevant when both the wizards are close in magic power and level overall. Jellal does not even use his strongest spell to defeat his opponents.
I think one of the disadvantages Jellal has over Laxus is that he‘s not as good in hand to hand combat as Laxus is (it’s also one of reasons why he had a tough time against GS)

jellal was slapping natsu around h to h back in the early series. like zero magical attacks
laxus was not slapping natsu with h to h but with just magical attacks actuallt during the ending of the fight natsu was actually matching laxus in h to h. jellal s very proficient at hand to hand combat

That was awhile back
never said he was bad just not as good plus Jellal was using meteor when he fought Natsu in h to h.

oh i see. okay what makes you think jellal is inferior to laxus in hand to hand combat
I really don’t have a good answer it just Laxus seems to use h to h more in his fights than Jellal does (to be fair that also could depend who they fight against)

also dragon slayers seem to have an advantage over some mages when it comes to H to H

What do you mean?
Jellal has consistently had one of the best combat-speed/CQC in the verse thanks to meteor. Dude has blitzed pretty much everyone using that. Amongst the non dragon characters, it's really just Suzaku and DF Natsu who are superior to him in that aspect.

For a more direct comparison when it comes to Laxus, Jellal even blitzed Jura in the same arc where Jura had combat speed comparable to or better than Laxus. Similarly, he ran circles around base Natsu in ToH, whereas Natsu could at least somewhat keep up in CQC against Laxus in Fanstasia festival.

What Laxus has over Jellal in CQC is raw physical strength. In overall speed and CQC however, Jellal takes it.

****************

Anyway, overall I still have Laxus >= Jellal, Mainly due to higher burst power (they are otherwise comparable in overall combat stats). Jellal has higher peak destructive power IMO, but at the cost of higher cast time.
Laxus needs much lesser time to charge up his stronger moves (all aside from Fairy Law has low cast time which makes them more practical), while Jellal needs some prep time for his strongest moves (Abyss Break, self destruction and Sema all have high cast time)

Same tier, but Laxus overall a bit stronger. In 10 matches, Laxus takes 6 or 7

gildarts blitz august who streamrolled jellyboy
but yeah i think jellyboi has good hand to hand combat. who was actually slapping natsu back in the days

yeah you make a good point. dragon slayers do have the edge when it comes to h to h combat. i think dragon slayers generally have an edge in fights due to using dragon slayer magic. they just built diff i guess. but we have some like haku and misaki. i guess they would be outliers and maybe skullion since we haven't seen his h to h skills

August steamrolled Gildarts too, and the blitz happened only once at beginning when August was caught by surprise. After the initial blitz, it was August who was overwhelming Gildarts in CQC.
Point being, you can't use that to scale Gildarts' CQC above August (cause he isn't), and through that above Jellal, especially when the entire August vs Jellal was offscreen,

August was a hard counter to anyone with caster magic (99% of the verse), so this isn't even a question about combat speed and CQC. We don't know if Jellal could've blitzed August in the off screen fight either, we don't know, so it's pointless to discuss this,

Jellal also blitzed dragon Acno and human Acno in the same arc, weaker characters blitzing stronger characters when they aren't focused/get caught by surprise is not new in FT.

(anyway, August is the EASILY best CQC fighter in the OG series after Acno. Simply because he can stack Jellal's meteor, Cobra's mind read, and Racer's speed magic. But that's besides the point)

WTF is orion?

That is true but it seems like the dragon eaters are not like most dragon slayers

That is true Meteor is a very good combat spell but like I said before I don’t have a very good answer it just base on their fights and how Laxus magic is more suited for close quarter combat while most of Jellal spells are more suited for long distance.

Also it may depend on the type of enemies they fought

Was that the GC 2.0? Lmao, I forgot most of that disaster arc. Absolute trash arc, trash spell.

Anyway, yea that is a low cast speed spell, and has decent power. I wonder how much damage it would do to Laxus.

But that shouldn't be how we scale tho, especially since Jellal has one of the best CQC/speed boosting ability in the series, in meteor.
Jellal obviously shitstomps characters like Gajeel, Sting, Wendy etc in CQC, even though they are DS too. Being a DS doesn't automatically put someone higher in CQC ability.

It's true that Laxus is obviously better than base Jellal in CQC, however when we take a CQC buff ability into consideration, things change. We have two points of direct comparison, where they both faced the same opponents (Natsu/Jura), and Jellal performed a lot better in CQC and speed.

That is true just because someone a DS doesn’t mean they’ll be great at CQC it just seems like some mages are more suited for CQC than others

In the Jellal vs. Jura fight Jellal mostly stay at a distance with only getting close once.

The Signario Sisters are always together, so it is safe to say that both of them (together) are stronger to the point of scaring God Serena. Still, Ennie Signario is far stronger than Luso (remember that Luso fears Ennie). Luso, previously, mostly defeated Erza, Jellal, and Minerva by transforming them into dogs (hax magic), a magic that the narrative tendentiously makes she doesn't use when fighting Erza in the final battle.

God Serena isn't far weaker than Luso when the subject is "offensive skills", he also showed more powerful attacks fighting Jellal than Luso showed in her battle against Erza
this is not valid argument.

similar argument to the above would be
"GMG Jura is near Gildarts tier. but only with mt Juji. without it he is erza tier. he never used mt fuji against laxus thus laxus only defeated an erza tier." no jellal or laxus fan will accept this argument

the girls scared the sh!t out of serena. so separately they are stronger

they also claimed to use their strongest form against erza (i remember at least the stronger one did) thus they went all out.

he has never shown such feat.
technically he hasnt even shown to keep his copied magic but dont let me bash your favorite :teehee

Ennie alone can kill God Serena per her own words. So they are separatly stronger than him as well. And if people stills believes Jellal= Laxus, so are Erza= Mirajane, and Gray=Natsu which obviously isn't true.

Surface level observation.

Laxus never used LB on Natsu in that fight, so you are essentially comparing Base Laxus to Jellal with speed enhancements? We've already seen that Laxus could perception blitz Natsu with LB, so Jellal blitzing him is a moot point.

As for Jura, I maintain that Jellal had the element of surprise on his side. Jura had no idea who he even was until GC was used. Jellal also could not keep Meteor going indefinitely against him because Jura knocked him out of it.

In any event, none of this matters as it is not current.

Regardless of who's faster, LB has better utility than Meteor since it can compensate in other ways if it's not as fast.

Against someone like Jellal who can be grabbed out of Meteor if someone can just tank it, this spells disaster.

Laxus = Erza >> DDSK >> Signario Sisters >> God Serena who Jellal had a hard diff fight with.

Erza beat two opponents, who God Serena stated that they are vastly superior to him, back to back with mid difficulty (she didn't even use enchant once). Meanwhile Misaki would've forced a draw with Erza had Erza not been saved by Wendy. She also forced Erza to use her current strongest attack against her while the Signario Sisters were washed with a Blumenblatt and simple sword slash in Red Pants.

Laxus beats Jellal no question as he is on the same level as Erza whilst Jellal is not. This is not downplay as the evidence above is clear as day.

I'm honestly surprised this is still a fight after Erza washed the Signario Sisters 1v2.

I don't like getting into this jellal vs laxus debate cuz it's the most heavily biased debate after Erza vs laxus. It's always filled with some kind of agenda.

But here's a food for thought. Mashima said the strongest dragon slayers in Alvarez arc was acnologia then god serena then between laxus or natsu. Me personally I really don't care about what mashima says about character's strength on his streams and whatever.

You already involved yourself though? Maybe you just don't like when there's supporting evidence opposing your stance.

Also, please tell us why Alvarez power levels even matter? The current scaling is as Jko posted.

Please tell me what is my stance?

I just pointed that out. It's what the author who's writing the manga thinks. As you can see I also clearly said I don't care what he says about character's strength
