Looking at how Usopp has improved through the course of the series.......how would Usopp fare against the pirate captain that first plagued his hometown: Kuro

Usopp can not win this one...

BUT SOGEKING CAN!!! horohorohorohoro guraguraguragura toptoptoptoptop

in all seriousness I honestly believe Usopp can win this one... Usopp has endurance, ingenuity, tactics, and a pretty fast slingshot, he was out firing guns...

Here is how I see it, Usopp starts with super kill smoke star... he runs... he places breath dials everywhere... he continues to run... he gets hit a few times... he get's up to Kuro's surprise... Kuro runs at him with killing intent and does a slash capable of slicing stone... it doesn't work for some reason... IMPACT... Kuro is recovering from the shock... Usopp is in his safety zone... pushes Kuro onto defense with shuriken and cacti stars... Kuro smells the gas... giant flame tori from kabuto... game over -- play again???

The problem I see here for ussop is that I don't see him keeping up with kuro's speed. He certainly can take a hit but how about several slashes? Ussop needs to improve a bit for that.

Ussop, If Ussop couldn't beat Kuro then there is no way he should still be alive at the halfway point of the grandline. I think he has enough endurance to handle Kuro's attacks. If he could fight somewhat on par with Luffy (Water 7 fight) then he should be able to beat Kuro.

Why not? Usopp was keeping up with Luffy's speed pretty well when they fought in Water Seven. He shouldn't really have any problem dealing with Kuro's normal speed. Shakushi might be faster than him, but he should at least be able to dodge.

Luffy did held back against ussop quite a but though. When luffy did go after ussop he did beat the crap out of him. Not to mention ussop was familiar with luffy's techniques and moves, something which he won't have against kuro. ALSO, ussop had a great deal of preparation when he fought luffy. Ussop has a chance of dealing damage and can take damage but how can he tank kuro's attacks? Ussop can tank pretty much any attack from a blunt object but there is no way he is tanking a slash.

I don't think Kuro being faster is a real problem. Ussop's taken more powerful attacks from other opponents, so if he couldn't handle Kuro now he wouldn't be alive. I think it's safe to say that the straw hats should be able to beat their first respective villains; Nami to Arlong (questionable), Ussop to Kuro, Sanji to Don Krieg, Chopper to Wapol or else the crew wouldn't of gotten as far as they have.

Usopp is fat now, he's an easy target for Kuro. :p

But seriously, I want to think Usopp, and if it wasn't for Kuro's Shakushi which brings him (seemingly) Soru-like speed, I wouldn't really doubt that Usopp would win. I still think he might be able to beat him as long as he doesn't let Kuro use his Shakushi. It's kind of easy to spot with the bobbing back and forth and whatnot, and it also makes him an easier target, forcing him to stay in the same spot for a little while. So as long as he doesn't do the typical manga/anime "just stand and wait for the other person to attack"-thing, I think Usopp could win.

At the moment I just can't imagine kuro falling to ussops attacks.... I mean, would it be so easy for ussop to hit with his attacks someone as fast as kuro? By no means... What could ussop do once kuro is really close? I don't see him defending himself in any way up close. I guess a dial could provide a temporal defense but kuro is not the type to get taken out in one hit nor the type to fall for the same trick twice. He is quite clever as I remember. Ultimately, ussops main problem is his lack of superhuman strength or speed which would give him a chance to not get hit by kuro. Ussop can survive being hit by a tank but a slash to the gut or neck would take him out just the same as anyone else.

Sadly, the current Ussop's best attacks are his lies and the impact dial. Sure, he can make some nice flames, but any decently fast opponent at the moment should be able to dodge Ussop's ranged attacks.

What's more, the impact dial is useful against direct impact, whereas Kuro is a blade fighter, making that probably useless. And then really the lies usually work best on the less analytical opponents and Kuro was probably the smartest opponent in the East Blue.

So really, it comes down to this: Are Ussop's ranged attacks accurate / fast enough to hit East Blue Kuro? I'm not sure.

I don't see Kuro moving faster than Luffy did in Water 7 without getting to use his Shakushi attack. And yes, it's true that Usopp knew Luffy's fighting style and everything, but I don't believe he could have predicted Luffy's every movement, and if I remember correctly he did get a couple of shots in there that weren't mid-Luffy-attack.

I'm still kind of unsure, but I'm still going to stick with Usopp for this one. The reason being simply that as long as he doesn't let Kuro use his super-speed, I do believe he could keep up. And if he used only his most destructive sort of projectiles and not his Egg Star and whatnot, he would probably be able to deal some real damage.

... oooor, I just like Usopp too much to admit that he STILL couldn't beat the first bad-guy he ever faced.
