I feel like our cyborg pervert needs a discussion thread of his own!
I know he doesn't attract that much attention as Luffy, Zoro and Sanji but nonetheless, he is quite an interesting character.
Not much is known about his early past except that his parents were pirates and that they left him in Water 7. As a teenager, together with Iceberg, he was an apprentice of shipwright Tom and just like Tom, Franky has built a ship for the Pirate King. It feels like Oda can still go back to his past and work a bit on who his parents are and why they left him.
Franky has put his life on the line for what he believed in before we met him, revealed to us in his flashback, when he tried to stop the Puffing Tom from taking his master Tom to Enies Lobby, with his bare hands. An act that inspired the sumo-wrestling frog named Yokozuna to keep doing the same. Heavily injured from the clash with a train, in order to save his own life, Franky repaired/reinforced his body with scrap metal he found on the island and became a cyborg.
We met him first as a side antagonist during Water 7 when he gave trouble to the Strawhats, acting as an underground boss of the city and a thief who has beaten up Usopp and stolen the money from him, invoking the retaliation from Strawhats and destruction of Franky house, leading to a clash with Luffy at the Galley-La company. Since then, he reconnects with Usopp and starts to admire his love for Going Merry and gets captured by the CipherPol and from that moment he becomes unintentionally an ally of the Strawhat gang. At the same time, he saves one of the SHs and gets saved by them and all that was left was to grab his Speedo's(and his jewels) to get him on the ship as crew's shipwright.
He is both a tough guy and an oversensitive pervert at the same time, weird combination but I am sure someone out there among the fans has some connection with Franky's character. I really liked his pre-skip design and combat style but since the break, both his role in the crew and his design have not impressed me. He is one of the characters that Oda is most creative with. His style and haircut change often, he is the character with the most drastic changes during the time skip. Hairstyle inspiration comes from Jim Carrey:
Like many other characters, he wasn't immune to Oda's sit-on-the-bench treatment in the New World.
He got some panel time in a duel with Senor Pink when they punched it out to see who of the two is more Hardo Boildo. An inspiration from Schwarzenegger's Termination came to play during that heated box match.
When it comes to his combat abilities I think he is one of the most powerful SH members, for sure in the first half. Before time skip he defeated 2 agents of CP9, Fukuro and Nero who only had 4 techniques mastered. He was also quite a help in the fight against Oars and iirc, his attack was one of the few that actually had an impact on the continent puller.
He is basically a weaker version of Kuma minus the DF. He has all kinds of weapons and projectiles he can shoot. Just like Kuma, he can shoot a laser(sugoi) and he has air pressure based attacks, plus he has all his gadgets that he invented while playing the mad scientist. Surely, he has no broken DF like Kuma but at the end of the story, we could expect Franky to be a more powerful cyborg. We still dont know everything that he can do since we only scratched the surface in his fight with Senor Pink.
Personally, I like his character a lot, even tho I like pre-skip version much more I still expect great things from Franky. I expect a return of a badass hairstyle, at least in his battle mode and possibly a modification of his physique for the toughest fights he will get. I am excited to see what will Oda do with his past and his combat abilities now that we are in the Yonko territory. He is one of the very few individuals who saw the contents of the blueprints of Pluton and I think they are still saved on a microchip in his head so, even tho he burned the originals he still has a digital copy. When we finally meet Dr Vegapunk I think the one having the most interactions with him will be Franky, similar to how Chopper had a beef with Caesar. If Pluton re-emerges and if Uranus is a machine as well, Franky's role will most likely be crucial.
When the crew separated after Zou, Franky promised to build a weapon that will defeat Kaido... We have seen nothing about that but maybe it will be hinted some time later during the arc. The weapon may not exaclty defeat Kaido but it also may play a role in his downfall. He is a character who seems like he has no need for Haki development, the hardness of his body is already reinforced and his sensors are replacing observation. I am hyped for a fight that will push Franky so far that he uses up all he has, cant wait for badass cyborg stuff.
What do you guys think of Franky and what do you expect of him, where do you rank him combat power wise? What will be his most important moment in the story? Can he shake up the calm waters of Monster Quartet?
