Re: DGM Hang Out Thread - Part 1

For it to be shoujo hmm, i disagree. Mostly the girls in shoujo are looking up to the male characters and the male characters are larger then life. True Lenalee Miranda and Road who are the main girls in the story have tragic pasts they definitely are not shoujo type females. Neither are they captivated by a male. Actually Road is the aggressive type of female. Lenalee empowers herself by thinking of her comrades, and Miranda tries her best to be no longer the gloomy useless person.

If i dare say DGM is a manga that defies all genres and is hard to label. It doesn't follow a path of BL shoujo or typical shonen. This can be a blessing as well as a curse when placing it in a magazine. But still i think it has a right to shine and that has been acknowledged. To be moved out of WSJ to SQ alone is rare. Usually if an artist cant keep up it gets canceled. It just means DGM is alive and i'm thankful for that.
Hmm, I think you've misinterpreted the comments from Googlez_kun and me. ;) We meant the the ART STYLE with the blushing, Allen's long eyelashes and the fluid inking are similar to the artwork we would see in shoujo/BL manga- not that we actually think DGM is a shoujo/BL manga.

I do agree that DGM is hard to define. The storytelling and word building takes precedence over battles. I've always thought that it would have been interesting if Hoshino published at a magazine for older audiences.

Re: DGM Hang Out Thread - Part 1

I can somewhat associate with the comment that the art style looked somewhat shojou-esque between chapters 209 to 215 (not 213). This being mostly because of the softer lines and details. The use of gradiating tones from dark to light instead of extreme black on white contrast (used in most action orientated graphic novels) could also be responsible for giving such an effect. However, like t-girl, I didn't think that the art style was shoujou to such an extreme where it became "gross" or in effective. I personally think shoujou's and the like tend to be very uninteresting in terms of how they look because of their usual bland backgrounds, wispy non-committal lines and limited variety in form and use of basic artistic principles like perspective, contrast, overlapping etc. The only thing that I found slightly unnerving was perhaps the overvaluation of the eyes in both 214 to 215. It bugged me because I found that the large eyes were disproportionate with the face and the eyelids were especially too big. Also with the exception of a few drawings like little Mana smiling the larger eyes fealt like a cop out because they left little room for expression in regards to the other features of the face.

With that aside, in regards to chapters 216 to 218 I have no really burning complaints. I think she adjusted the eyes well and I love each panel. In fact I tend to find the complaints in regards to these chapters particularly strange especially from people who loved the Noah's arc ark style, the Edo arc style and the Timothy arc to Alma arc styles, as this current style strikes me as a harmony between all those styles. It is not as angular and rigid as the much more "victorian" Noah's ark style but I find it to be much more expressive and just as consistent(plus I love the more organic lines as opposed to angular ones). It is not as expressive and animated as Edo arc style but it is a lot more consistent in terms of its effectiveness. And it may not be as weighted as the Timothy arc Alma arc styles in terms of muscle, bone, fat and fabric definition but it does strike a balance in terms of giving a sense of weight without making it too heavy or having the characters look too solid.
Another irony that I find however is that people claim that the characters look girly in the current style, but if I can recall in the earlier days of this series males had a lot of hip definition but very little shoulder definition, which recently she has dealt with quite sensitively in my opinion.

I am also talking about the art. Hoshino does not follow 1 path for her characters. Sometimes she does it more towards 1 genre then the other. Thats why i say its hard to place it. Among other things like overall character design (art/profile). I did not read your comments wrong.

Re: DGM Hang Out Thread - Part 1

I found some interesting information about D.Gray-man. What do you think about this? I know that raws or official information on Jump are not published but... Maybe this is true? >~< *fingers crossed*
"Guys, guys!!!
I really hope this is not fake - though I actually don't think so - but I just found this german site.
It's from tokyopop, a german publisher for mangas (and it's responsible for the release of D.Gray man in Germany.).

https://www.tokyopop.de/aktuell/d-gray-man-die-pause-ist-vorbei/

Since I don't think most of you speak German, I'm gonna translate it:

(headline) D.Gray man: The break is over!
Good news for all D.Gray man fans!
After Katsura hoshino was forced to take a break from work due to health issues, she's drawing again by now and working on new chapters of D.Gray man. On November 1, 2013 the volume 24 of the series was published in Japan and ranked 2nd in the manga charts on the spot. You can look forward to the continuation of the exciting fight between Allen and the Millenium Earl in the new Year!

Well, this translation sucks. Free writing would have been better...
Anyway, I really hope this is true, because then... maybe one, two months before it goes on! (I want to see Lavi....)
Excuse my poor english"

Re: DGM Hang Out Thread - Part 1

But aren't they just referring to the chapters in the new volume itself, which will come out in German next year? The Earl and Allen's ongoing fight does resume at the end of volume 24. As a publisher, they're not encouraging people to (only) read Edited Mangas online after all. They're speaking to an audience that left off at volume 23.

I think they're talking about volume 24, not chapter 219 (plus), since the date is kinda old (Nov 14)

Well, regardless, D.Gray-man is probably going to be coming back for its 10th anniversary next year. I can't see Hoshino or Jump casually forgetting about it.

I'm also hoping for an animated special. Maybe based on the Zombie Arc?

I think Jump possibly going to skip D.Gray-man's 10th year anniversary since they skipped for HxH.

10th year anniversary is a good chance to advertise a series. It only depends on the author him/herself want or not, but I can't see that someone like Hoshino is not excited about it, despite her health, so I think at least there will be somekind of news.

It's too soon (half of a year) to predict what will happen anyway.

Allen will attend in J-Stars Victory Vs

Re: DGM Hang Out Thread - Part 1

I think that Allen being a support character is such a waste... I always wondered how would It be all his attacks and transformations in a game and this was the perfect opportunity but, well, at least he is in the game. Hope we'll get another DGM's character in support mode like Lenalee or Kanda :)

Yeah, that's disappointing to see him in that role. Hopefully a video clip of his gameplay will be posted soon.

Saint Seiya is a franchise that spans generations and different iterations. DGM has never reached that level.

Re: DGM Hang Out Thread - Part 1

I'm honestly amazed that D.Gray-man is being represented at all. It's been a SQ series for over five years, and you don't see Blue Exorcist in this game even though it's more popular than most Jump series these days. Either Jump is including DGM as a way to respect its Jump heritage, or it's a sign that it may be coming back to Jump.

That sounds like fake to me.

Well, there's a big difference between Hoshino and Togashi. Togashi just... doesn't care. Hoshino cares a lot, but her various health issues prevent her from drawing. But in the past 7 volumes there's been a fan book, an art book, a character book, and a novel, so I expect big things next year.

Re: DGM Hang Out Thread - Part 1

It's kind of offtopic, but I think it's difficult to assess who "cares" more about there series between Hoshino and Togashi. It's two completely different situations anyway.
