Re: DGM Hang Out Thread - Part 1

Nice rant! :verily

The fun thing (for me at least) is that while I agree with 99.9% of what you say, I still find Nea and Mana's closeness touching. You can easily see him as a total villain who doesn't care who he hurts (hurting Johnny without a thought), or you can see him as having an important goal he's forcing himself to be cruel to accomplish, although he'd rather not act that way (saying he has to extinguish his own feelings; keeping his promise to Mana). Either view works (until we learn more).
You've made great points.... but... but...but... :bored I still feel that with the memories of Mana and Neah that we've seen, it would make sense to conclude that Mana did not ever truly love Allen because he wasn't sane enough... but even in his insanity he still loved the little brother who risked everything for Mana... and as touching as that is...where does that put Allen? In their (Mana's and Neah's) relationship?

Was Allen just some random friend that sacrificed himself for Neah? Because I don't want this to be a repeat of the Alma/Kanda Arc. It made sense for Allen to be the (extremely) kind friend and sacrifice himself (they labeled him traitor and called him a devil for letting Kanda and Alma get away) during that arc. Because Allen was never really part of their relationship, he was just the new comer that knew nothing about the Order's sins and tragedies. After all Kanda's relationship with Allen is only a small part of Allen's life. So it would make sense for Allen be the random kind stranger in that scenario.

But if Allen was just a random kind stranger for Neah/Mana as well... that would mean that after all Allen sacrificed for Mana... after everything that boy endured... the happy ending would be that Mana and Neah will be together and Allen will still just be a random kind stranger.

And that doesn't seem fair at all. :pout

Honestly... I feel like the only happy ending would be if Allen and Neah are the same person (not two different souls sharing the same body as they are now)... if Neah ends up being who Allen was and Allen ends up who Neah is... then Allen's not just a random kind stranger but was someone who in two different lives was the brother and son of Mana.

You know what I feel better about Neah already. Thanks for being so patient with me.

As for the Cross thing. I completely agree with you.

I think that Allen was able to call Mana's soul to make an Akuma because Mana cared for him. (You could argue it was Nea within him but Allen was the one calling out, Nea was out of it, and he wouldn't have wanted such a thing to happen to his brother anyway. I don't think that's how the Akuma-making process works.) :p Also, we need to --purely for the sake of the understanding characters and not as something anyone should ever do IRL!-- consider that they didn't exactly start out with a healthy "adopted father-adopted son" relationship. Mana did not choose to have Allen as his son. He was confused and indifferent to him at first. It was Allen who chose and adopted Mana. Now this seems to prove your point at first but did Allen do this out of love? No, he did it out of guilt. Familial love had to have come later for both of them, meaning things changed between them sometime after Mana realized Allen wasn't a dog. It's probably even because of this that Allen so quickly believed his first dad might never have grown to reciprocate those feelings like Allen thought he did. He's young yet (or is he?) but Allen has had a lifelong pattern of having a bad start with people (Mana, Cross, Kanda, Krory, Link, Tokusa) and then winning them over. Mana was just the first time, imo. Maybe Nea will be the last? :cheez

Well there is a lot of overlap with Alma and Kanda's story for Allen, from both sides of it even. But where we're talking about Allen's relationship with Mana, I think most of the overlap comes from Kanda's side of it and not as much from Alma's. Marie nailed it: Like Kanda, Allen hurt and then "killed" someone close to him, and then had to live with the horror of that trauma. But Kanda found redemption and I'm sure Allen will too (because Mana is the Earl). Allen's not just going to symbolically sink into the mud like Alma did in the end (I hope), or die filled with anger/hatred/guilt/misery. Like Kanda, he's had his years of suffering. I'm hoping now's the time for things to change for the better.

But if Allen was just a random kind stranger for Neah/Mana as well... that would mean that after all Allen sacrificed for Mana... after everything that boy endured... the happy ending would be that Mana and Neah will be together and Allen will still just be a random kind stranger.
Even if that was the ending Hoshino wanted (taking her sadistic streak to the max?), I don't think her editors would let her write it. I hope.

Allen wasn't a random stranger to Nea though. He called him his 'friend.' I doubt they were related. It's entirely possible that theory some people have that past!Allen was the former Bookman apprentice is true. We already know Bookman was hanging around the Noah clan back then. And no wonder Bookman would constantly be pushing Lavi to be impartial if he lost his former apprentice because he was too emotionally involved (reminds me of Psycho-Pass actually...).

You know what I feel better about Neah already. Thanks for being so patient with me.

As for the Cross thing. I completely agree with you.

Re: DGM Hang Out Thread - Part 1

I've been enjoying everyone's discussion. ^__^ I'm just a mere observer so don't mind me.

I will just say that I have a theory that past!Allen was a "nameless mysterious orphan" picked up by the Campbell family. I'm actually putting this into fanfiction mode so I rather not specify more about this theory in case someone randomly finds it on ff.net. I've typed up three pages so far, but your discussions have been helping with my brainstorming a little. Thanks. :super

Re: DGM Hang Out Thread - Part 1

^ Sure thing. Just keep in mind that it's going to be the fourth chapter of an already existing story. ^__^ Well, I was planning on PMing it to you, but if other people are interested..... (I mean, my theory-based story is already on ff.net. Just a little shy to post it here. ^^; )

Damn!! You made me cry :crying

Past!Allen and Neah were probably best friends/brother like, even more than Cross and Neah were in my opinion...
Cross doesn't seem to know about Past!Allen at all, so I think Neah wasn't actually planning on dragging Past!Allen in his battle with the Noahs.... But we all know how Allen is so he probably butted in when he found out about the whole Noah fight... Though Neah tried to chase him away Allen still tried to help him everytime and followed him arround....
When Allen found Neah dying he wanted to help and took Neahs memories, Neah having no choice at that moment sended Cross a message through Timcampy telling him about "Going to awaken in a person called Allen" or something like that...Dying messages are short...probably
Neah expected Allen to stay close with Mana but Apo-guy appeared just after Neah died and capture him, expermimenting on him, making him lose his memories and other horrible stuff........
Current!Allen meeting Mana was probably a coincidence necessary for the plot lol!

I think Allen will have a happy end Though I'm really afraid that he will have a bitter sweet one.... where the Innocence are destroyed, the Noahs are having a peacefull life and the exorcists are or back living as normal humans or helping out restoring the damage that were created in the final battle with Allen and The Earl (maybe Neah) vs. The Heart.....

Suddenly my comment became alot larger than I planned to write... xD

I think Allen will have a happy end
I hope he will, but every time thinking about DGM, my heart and my brain have a huge fight...I want to see him continue living after the war, traveling around and meeting people that he have met during his journey...

Mmm.. Ok. I will think on that. Maybe after I get this fourth chapter completed. I'm starting to get too busy to work on it. ^___^

I am not sure if this is the correct thread, but I just got my Volume 24! It was so good to be getting something d.gray-man again even though it is stuff I have mostly already read. I haven't had a chance to read it yet, but I hope reading those last few chapters for a second time makes understanding them a bit easier. I love the front and back covers too!

I did too! I've already lent it out to someone so I can't reference it directly, but I was a bit disappointed in some of the translations made - they didn't make any sense within the context of the scene/chapter. Other times, they were really witty and clever!

---------- Post added at 07:59 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:51 PM ----------

Before I start my rant... I want you to know that I want to be proven wrong.

You know I never quite understood that. As fans, we know pretty much nothing about Neah or Mana. Like in the series they discuss them a lot but we've only just met Neah. (and not a very good first impression, attacking Allen's friends, and ordering Timcanpy to help make sure Allen disappears.) I honestly can't help but resent Neah because he's threatening Allen's existence and he sabotaged Allen's relationship with Mana. Like I keep feeling like Allen doesn't actually own anything for himself.

in the end what I'm trying to say... it just seems like Neah ruined Allen's life. (or made sure that Allen would never have a nice one) and seems like he's going to make Allen do everything he's opposed to: becoming the Earl, killing people, and hurting the only people that belong to Allen.

Anyway I hope you can prove me wrong. I really don't want to resent Neah.

Nice rant! And I do agree with you!

But I never said I look him up because Neahs nice (thought, honestly young!Mana looks absolutely adorable and if he turns out to be the Earl, it will absolutely break my heart). They're just hot. And, there's this one artist on pixiv (Shumiko, I think) that draws Neah, Mana, Allen, Cross, Road, the Noah, really well and somehow... very heartbreaking. She also does comic strips of theoretically situations that are wonderful. But like, even though I agree that Neah is essentially stealing away everything Allen has ever known, somehow Neah's struggle to save/find his brother is so wonderfully tragic. His love for Mana runs very, very deep. Besides, it seems that past!Allen had agreed to posses Neah in the first place, so I kinda feel that current!Allen was never supposed to exist in the first place, which adds to the irony and tragedy throughout DGM. But Mana and Neah are hot. So I like to look at their fanart. :)

And wooooooow. That took me ages to reply.

Re: DGM Hang Out Thread - Part 1

Is dgm cancelled?
It's on a very long hiatus. We don't know when it'll be back but the hiatus notice specifies they will give notice in the magazine it runs in, Jump SQ, a month before it returns. Aside from that, here is the list of currently serialized manga in Jump SQ. DGM is listed along the others. If you follow the link they've updated the page with volume 24-related pics and discussion. I don't think they're cruel enough to show the current big cliffhanger but then never follow through with continuing it. :')

Re: DGM Hang Out Thread - Part 1

It's not exactly the lengthiest hiatus a manga has ever had, but it has been very long for us to wait, yes.

There are rumors that she is having or had issues with her hand/wrist. I am sending positive thoughts with the hope that she will get better and/or that anything else that needs to be worked out gets worked out. I am hoping that soon I will be looking forward to new DGM chapters every month just like some of my other favorites :)

I also check here for updates. TBH whenever I saw that the 219 Spoiler thread had a new post, I was really hopeful. :')

Just wondering, but in the past what is the longest time that a manga has been on hiatus and returned? It's too bad that Hoshino-sensei doesn't keep a blog (as far as I know?).

Some D. Gray-man quotes to remind us what we are patiently waiting for: https://www.goodreads.com/author/quotes/311098.Katsura_Hoshino

Re: DGM Hang Out Thread - Part 1

Based on the dates in the Hiatus thread, the longest Hoshino was gone was 7 months (April to Nov. 2012), which just happened to be the one before the current one. ^^;

Yeah, she doesn't have a blog, Twitter, etc. since she is a private person.

The Four "Kings of Hiatus" - http://comipress.com/news/2007/01/30/1430 :nerd

DGM has likely earned its place in an updated version of that list, but Guyver still appears to be the winner with its multiple multi-year hiatuses. (30 volumes since 1985!): http://www.japan-legend.com/wiki/index.php?title=Guyver#Publication_History
