By having Itachi being edo-tenseid, a lot of us though that they would run into each other at some point but it seems Kishi has 'confirmed' to us that he doesnt intend on making such thing happen and it's completly understandable as this could have caused some major problems and dissapointement to the readers. Let me explain ;
Itachi would be the perfect candidate for changing Sasuke's heart. Sasuke is targeting Konoha because he thinks Kyuubi really was a natural disaster as 'everything' Madara said about Itachi was actually true, but Itachi knows Madara is the reason why everything has happened so him spitting it out to Sasuke would change everything. Madara would now become the ultimate target for revenge and thus Konoha would have no reason to be targeted anymore.
Itachi succeeding would 'nerf' Naruto as he wouldnt have anything to do with Sasuke turning good and obviously, we wouldnt get to see Sasuke vs Naruto which would be the biggest troll that could ever happen in the manga.
So in all honesty, i expected such thing to happen as Naruto needs to be the reason why Sasuke is saved/dies good or whatever and it seems that Itachi wants the story to go in this direction as well.
Although, i must say that i think it would be very important for Sasuke and Itachi to be able to meet each other again, as clearly, Sasuke will likely never ever be able to rest in peace without bidding a fitting farewell to his brother.
But yet again, i'd find it 'dissapointing' that Itachi would meet Sasuke again as the 'I'm Sorry Sasuke, there won't be a next time' statement would somewhat loose it's value in the process (imo).
But if they do ever meet again, i think the most likely scenario at this point would be for it to happen ala Kakashi meeting his father.
From what we saw, Kakashi's father wasnt able to rest in peace until Kakashi forgave him for what he did. Given the circumstances, Itachi feels like he has failed and now obviously knows that Sasuke is being tormented by the events surrounding the truth about him so it would be fitting for him to not being able to move on like Kakashi's father wasnt and had to wait all for Kakashi for it to happen.
Also, let's not forget Sasuke's parents, they clearly shouldnt be able to rest in peace as well as they know that their actions wrecked chaos upon both their sons and made them live a life of martyr all the way to the end. I'm pretty sure that as dedicated as they were to take over the village, they would take everything back if they could and for that i'd say it would be fitting for them to be waiting for Sasuke to come back to them to finally put a closure on the Uchiha clan's story and things like what their father really thought of Sasuke as we never got to know what he really spoke about with their mother. Such thing happening would imo. be a way to wrap it all up for them.
