If Davy Jones is a term used for "devil/god of the sea", maybe he has something to do with the actual Devil Fruits? After all, Devil Fruit users don't know how to swim, so if one gets in the ocean, he is basically sent to "Davy Jones' locker".

There is a thread asking why only Roger got to Raftel and no one else has... maybe it's because Davy Jones' Locker is in the sea right around Raftel and you cant get by unless you beat Davy Jones himself. Roger was the Greatest Pirate the world had ever known, maybe he was the only person that could do it. (Until Luffy shows up xD)

I would think that if there was a davy jones in this manga it would be vander decken's ancestor. Vander decken is the name of the supposed captain of the flying dutchman. If this is the case then the original vander decken must have been a great pirate considering his legend has lived on for 10 generations.

Oda drew him for an SBS. So Davy Jones probably either exists or existed in the world of One Piece in my opinion...

I think Davy Jones does exist since he's a part of actual pirate lore. He could be known as god, the ultimate villain, or the one that Rogers met. he could also be a part of Tenryuubito, minus the jackass personality plus the leader or the oldest.

I think he does exist. Most likely will be one of Luffy's enemies in the New World.

It could also be that Davy Jones has already been introduced, at least in mention. Since he has evolved in a folklore boogyman, the roots of the name or the character aren't certain, but some versions hint that he may be Willem Van Der Decken, the fictional person and captain of the Flying Dutchman who reputedly sailed into a storm at the Cape of Good Hope, saying "I will sail, even if it is until the end of time." If so, Vanderdecken's previously mentioned ancestor or predecessor might be him.

Then again, it might not be. The implications of introducing Davy Jones will be immense, so Oda should do it sometime! For late 18th century sailors out at sea, there is no name more synonimous with 'God' or 'fate' so whoever he'll be, he will definitely be major.

To think about it. Who the hell is Joy Boy? I hope it's not a nickname for Davy Jones and DJ is totally a different person. Joy Boy looks like a good guy to me, not like the famous DJ (the devil himself). I hope we can see him in the new world.

Davy Jones is personification of death at sea - "Davy Jones Locker" means the ocean floor. If Davy Jones appears in One Piece (he must definitely will not) it will only be if the Sunny sinks. More likely than not Oda will continue making reference but never create an actual character. One Piece is not Pirates of the Caribbean, Oda does not turn historical pirates (let alone idioms) into characters. Blackbeard may reference a real pirate, but the character has nothing to do with the actual historical figure.

Only because the name exists doesn't mean that the person actually exists.For all we know,it might just be a mythical treasure,which was called Davy Jones' treasure(maybe due to its location-the ocean floor).

More importantly, why would he still be alive with his treasures being at that location? If he is as treasure hungry as I imagine him to be, he's likely just dead or it wouldn't be such an legendary map for an old treasure as Buggy makes it out to be.

edit: As definitely mentioned before, Oda mixes up legends and names with his own crazy ideas to create characters.
