I always thought that Vander Decken I. was kind of a homage to the character of Davy Jones, his ship was called "The Flying Dutchman", he killed all of his crew and he was always looking for a treasure but maybe i am wrong.

@Kaiten wasn't it bugy who referred to him in the first place? wasn't the band luffy received from nami and which he gave to bugy in impel down the one which allows the user to find ihis treasure? so he definitely exists.
Buggy never mentions Davy Jones. He was seeking underwater treasure but never claims it was Davy Jones treasure. The armband was a map to Captain John's treasure, not Davy Jones :XD

Can anyone actually link to where Davy Jones is referenced to as a real, living person? Anywhere there is some mention of him would be great, even if he is referred to as an idiom, rather than a person living or dead.

The Flying Dutchman is not associated with Davy Jones, though it is a similar legend. It's a ghost ship that can never return to port. Vander Decken is the name of the captain in the real legend. The story in One Piece is a bit of a reversal: the real Vander Decken was a human who can never return to land, the One Piece Vander Decken a fishman who can never again swim. Davy Jones was only associated with the Flying Dutchman in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies :p

I remember it being discussed a couple times, but here something more on Buggy's Captain John.
Vol 49 SBS said:
D: I've made a great discovery!! Despite being in a test... I managed to reread One Piece Volumes 1-48!! And my discovery was... In "The Highest Authority in the World", Chapter 233 of Volume 25, Buggy and his crew are searching for Captain John's treasure in a cave. And then in "Perona's Wonder Garden", Chapter 451 of Volume 47, there's Captain John again! Is this a super-huge discovery, or what?! Who IS Captain John? Just how cruel was he? Tell us, Ei-chaan!! P.S. Tosa Danji

O: Yes, you've found it. Well spotted. The man whose treasure Buggy and crew were searching for had become a zombie at Thriller Bark. Look close at Captain John's stomach. He has several slashes in his belly, and two swords sticking right out. These were the marks left when his crew killed him for keeping the treasure a secret from them. John died, and the location of the treasure became a legend, lost forever.
The fact that there is a established "Davy Back Fight" hints to it being an old tradition, meaning the name giver is most likely already dead. The picture Odacchi has drawn could be just a picture from a long time ago, since it wouldn't help showing a corpse.

I want to get back to my 'Davy Jones is the first DF eater' theory. I think it might be possible that Davy ate the very first DF in existence, one that hasn't been recorded in the books. This fruit is different in that it has characteristics of all three types: it keeps him eternal young so he can't die, he has water Logia abilities water, and he can become a fish hybrid.

If Davy Jones is not a character, has not appeared in the story, and never been referenced as a concept, how could he have been the first devil fruit eater?

Similar with Rikudou Sennin from Naruto. Davy Jones may make an appearance later or be mentioned later. We haven't been given complete information on devil fruits yet or much of the hsitory.

Keeping up with Oda's theme/pattern, Davy JOnes may be a laidback individual. He could be like Shanks, but more wild or carefree. He might not necessarily have to be evil or portray death.

Though, maybe Davy Jones' locker is where pirates go when they die. or devil fruit users. Maybe they have to fight Davy Jones or something in order to decide what happens to them. If they lose, they're sent to hell. If they win, they go to heaven or MIGHT be revived.

This is something similar to your theory.
I guess the DFs are really demons with powers that live in humans, animals and subjects, and they are afraid of sea.. why?
BECAUSE DJ lives there.

Where are you getting that from? There has been no mention of Davey Jones in the manga, certainly nothing connecting him to devil fruit. Devil fruit will be explained during the Vegapunk arc (whenever that is), it has already been revealed that he has studied devil fruit and learned how they work.

Since when has Oda done more than reference pirates real and legendary? At most he names characters after real pirates, legends, and naval battles. Even Van Der Dekken and the Flying Dutchman had little connection to the real legend, a ghost ship cursed never to reach port. Some characters are named after multiple events: Captain Kid is named after real life pirates Eustace the Monk and William Kidd, Trafalgar Law is named after the Battle of Trafalgar and pirate Edward Low.

Well, I said this as a theory you know..
One Piece is not complete without having Davey Jones as a villain (IMHO) and still it was mentioned in the Foxy story but not completely.
I hope all the theories come true because it would awesome to have an evil character like DJ.
Also,
once I asked something here, do you have an explanation of the monsters we saw after the Thriller Bark arc?

But, we just had Hody Jones at the bottom of the sea (= Davy Jones' locker) as villain, and the Flying Dutchman as ship in one arc... Three references on Davy Jones at once ...

There's no need for Davy Jones to appear in person anymore.

The Flying Dutchman isn't really associated with Hody and Davy Jones. You can't make it count as actual reference.

If I might add, it's likely just a misconception created through the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.

The Flying Dutchman was a ghost shipped doomed to sail the sea's forever. Van Der Dekken was the name of the Flying Dutchman's captain in the real legend, as well as in One Piece.

I didn't think of Hodi Jones connection to Davy Jones. Good catch Hoeru!
