I assume it's one of his strongest attacks. The other being an advanced roaring thunder and FL.
The only thing keeping me from being 100% sure it is an attack (instead of a 'mode' like LFD mode) is that Laxus' attack was really low key, so I wouldn't be surprised if he has the ability to replace his normal lightning in his attacks with the red lightning, it would be pretty OP if he can.

One Nuke like lightning of laxus was believed by August that it would kill Ajeel, who is individually stronger than any GOI.
Ajeel stated that it would not have killed him, you can clearly see he was just taken by surprise.

Let's be entirely honest here. The fact that Laxus was nerfed so much yet was still able to defeat a Spriggan is utter nonsense. That means that if he was healthy and full power, he would be a match for Zeref/August. Anybody can call Laxus strong which I have no doubts in my mind that he is, but to say that his fight was legitimate is a stretch. I've gone down this road many times but judging from the fight, it means either Laxus used PoF, Wahl is weak, or Laxus is near Zeref/August Level. I happen to go by the fact that Laxus won by a cheap-shot. Although Wahl definitely screwed up in his fight, he didn't prove that he was completely weak or fodder-level. He might not be the strongest Spriggan but he is not the weakest either. Now to say Laxus is near Zeref/August is also overhyping him. If he were, he should have been sent to the Eastern Front where he could be more of a use rather than the Southern Front which was filled with low-tier Spriggans. So what does this leave us? Laxus won. But with the use of Nakama Power.

I will take August's words more than Ajeel. If not kill it would have surely defeated him.

Not really. Laxus won legitimately. The only reason Laxus ever looked like dying was a sickness Mashima decided to introduce in ch 471. And Laxus knew about it of course, and that Wahl could expel MBP's, so he used that to cure himself from an illness Wahl did not inflict. To win he used his own power.

The GoI being stronger than Laxus would be another power scale breaker as far as I am concerned.
Laxus did not know that Wahl could expel those runes and the particles he just hoped for the best, Dumb luck. It was unfair he one-shot Wahl because at that point Wahl already increased his exoskeleton's durability. It should not have been a one shot at least. In a logical battle, Laxus eats laser unril Wahl decides otherwise.

Ajeel is a spriggan ALONGSIDE August. He has experience too. Plenty of it. He knows what will take him down and what will not. From his facial expression before he gets hit by Jupiter, you can see he was surprised by the blast ( we can not even tell if it defeated him as he might just make a comeback) as he was by Laxus's blast. Had he not been taken by surprise things might have ended otherwise.

To be honest Hiro is not allowing powerhouses of Ishgar properly fight a Spriggan. He didn't give Natsu a proper fight. He had to hold back his power and fight a hax ability. He didn't allow Natsu and laxus fight Ajeel. He made laxus fight a Spriggan who was immune to lightning. He made Jellal drown before his fight. He is not allowing them a proper fight.

A good solid no alibi fight would satisfy everyone.

I get your point but I mean let's look at the 3 you are talking about, Laxus still beat a Spriggan and to me he did show what he was capable of the illness just slowed him down a bit, Natsu will get plenty of the spotlight he's the main character after all so why worry about him right now? Lucy getting some time to shine while also having Natsu finish Jacob was imo the best way to go, Jellal clearly will let loose next chapter so we have to wait for that to happen to say much there but overall my point is are these characters really getting shafted as much as you say?

As my user name suggests I am both fan of Natsu and Lucy.I love Lucy getting spotlight. But in this way we are not able to guess the limit of their power.Natsu didn't properly fight a Spriggan without hax Magic, laxus didn't fight someone who will not be resistant to lightning. If they fight a Spriggan close to their power level without hax Magic then we will be able to gauge their powerlevel.

He knew Wahl could expel MBP's. I'd bet if Laxus was a character who is viewed as intelligent it would be interpreted as strategy and fans would praise the move.

I see it fair that Laxus won. He used magic, it just happened to defeat Wahl. Not much is unfair in battle tbh.

Laxus had no way of knowing that Wahl could expel those particles. Laxus is smart and quite keen when in and out of battle however that fight belonged to Wahl. What was unfair was Laxus's plot-wise durability. Wahl's attack sequence/array should have beaten him.

Not quite. Laxus didn't win fairly and there were a lot of complications with the explanations in his fight. Putting Laxus' intelligence aside, this whole fight was sort of a stretch to what should be considered a cheap-shot. I already explained why Red Lightning was nonsense, so I'll save the trouble of having to read that again. I also tried to explain the topic regarding MBP in the past but since it is brought up, I guess I'll just make it clearer this time because not only was the explanation illogical, it was pulled out of nowhere.

To start off, Magical Barrier Particles (MBP) which is what caused Laxus' illness is Anti-Magic or Anti-Ethernano Particles. It is a form of poison to mages since they use magic. Originally, these particles were associated with Curses which is opposite to Magic.

On the contrary, the Jutsu Shiki (Letter Magic) which is supposedly a form of Caster Magic that uses magical runes to create barriers which most people refer to as Rune Magic. Note that this is a form of magic and that it literally creates a barrier.

So the confusion between both types of Magical Barrier Particles lies in the fact that one is actually a magic barrier (Anti-Ethernano) that takes the fotrm of particles (Mist) while the other is pretty much just magic particles (Runes) that make up a barrier (Shield/Boundary). So same name, but totally different in context.

Also, one is actually a type of magic (Rune Magic) while the other originates from curses (Anti-Magic).

So generally, I would consider something like this strategy... But not when it is contradicting.

To sum up my point: Which ability does Wahl have? To dispel/nullify magic or to cure illnesses/curses? It can't be both...

Mavis was the one who deduced Wahl had the ability to dispel magic barriers. Laxus was in the Magnolia. He knew that Freed's barrier was nullified. Laxus explains in the battle vs Wahl that if someone can dispel Freed's barriers then they can probably nullify the magic barrier particles inside of him.

Laxus has that level of durability, it's not a plot-durability. I'd agree if he shows inferior durability feats in this arc, but the most durable in FT guild for now.

Personally I have been content with how they have been shown so far but I do agree that that in general Mashima is not very good with showcasing a consistent powerscale, I don't expect perfection but when I look at One Piece or even Bleach and Naruto I think Fairy Tail really lags behind in this aspect, the whole 7 year time skip with someone like Max being on par with base Natsu at the time was nonsense to me it cheapened the whole battle they just had with Hades, I am not saying it made the fight worse necessarily but it just was stupid to have a fodder character be fighting someone rather evenly who had just played a huge role in fighting the most powerful villain FT had fought at the time. Then there is the whole Natsu vs Twin Dragons fiasco which made no sense, How Mashima thought that making Natsu alone beat both Sting and Rogue who were both using Dragon force without him even having to use his lightning flame dragon mode when he and Gajeel were getting beat around by just Sting for quite a while is beyond me. My point is I like FT a lot but I think the best were ever going to get as far as power levels are concerned is more of a portrayal and generalized approach, expecting anymore I think is setting ourselves up for disappointment hence why I believe that the majority of Spriggans are more or less equal.

Well you really only explained to me your opinion on red lightning, you never proved it's nonsense just that it could be nonsense. Everyone, including myself are just forming an opinion on RL. We disagree on the cheap shot because we disagree about what is fair and unfair in FT.

I'm going to work the other way. I know that Wahl can nullify both Justu Shiki and MBP's using a particle canceler. Regardless on what we both think of magic, shouldn't our knowledge now accommodate the manga fact that Justu Shiki and MBP's share some common attribute? I think it's that they're both particles. One a magic particle, the other an anti-magic particle. The weapon or ability is called a particle canceler. I'm not sure on the definition of 'particle' in this context, but it's something Wahl can nullify.

I think people are just kinda overthinking things on how the Jutsu Shiki actually worked in that Laxus vs. Wahl fight. Let's review:

Throwback to the Fantasia arc - Jutsu Shiki is pretty much an establishment magic that's based around rules and restrictions. To dispel them, one must either fulfill the conditions for the runes to disappear (Freed vs. Juvia/Cana, and pretty much everyone else caught in Freed's runes) or rewrite them completely to suit one's situation (Levy / Evergreen on Tenrou Island).

Wahl unknowingly did the former through his Weakness Magic. Mashima's order of panels is very telling of this - he flashbacks to the scene where Fake!Wahl dispelled the runes during the initial Magnolia siege, wherein he first elaborated on his Weakness Magic. Wahl even re-emphasizes that this will not work on him, since he'll just pretty much do the same trick before.

Right after, Laxus immediately claims that the rule to dispel the runes he drew this time around is to cancel the MBPs. Since Wahl's weakness magic comes into play, the runes are automatically dispelled via fulfilling the condition of removing all MBPs, thus healing Laxus. Laxus basically used Wahl's magic against him.

What does this imply? To be honest, people are kinda underestimating Laxus's own brand of intelligence in battle; he may come across as all-brawny or a dumb muscle jock with good magic prowess, but the strategy he displayed in that battle is one of the more brilliant feats in FT. Instead of merely winning the battle through raw power alone, there was a lot of smarts involved, too, since he waited for the right time to cast the Jutsu Shiki to heal himself.

Laxus won legitimately. He knew of the guy's ability to dispel magic barrier particles. That was a genius move on his part. Don't like it? Tough. RL to me is a variant of lightning. It isn't the first elemental variant we've seen differing in both color and properties. Macao, Romeo, the guy from Phantom, all use variants of fire in similar fashion. As for what property it is, I'd say that's pretty self explanatory given the name. Legit win is legit. Move on people.

Considering that all the possible explanations that the manga has given were refuted, I think it is quite obvious that it was clearly PoF that saved the day. The only reason that people would look at this fight differently from Erza vs. Azuma is that it was their bias that was involved. Hiro Mashima purposely drew the scenes similar to each other, so it is up to us to determine whether both are legitimate or neither of them are. If we were to classify one as a result of Nakama Power, we cannot deny the other one either.

I'm going to work the other way. I know that Wahl can nullify both Justu Shiki and MBP's using a particle canceler. Let's be real here. What makes us believe that the ability Wahl has is just particle nullification?

First of all, the attack he used specifically says that it cancels Magical Barrier Particles. It never said just "particles". In other words, either it is anti-ethernano particles or runes/scripts. But Jutsu Shiki is a form of magic so it contains ethernano, right? So if the anti-ethernano particles were to disappear, wouldn't that indicate that ethernano particles would still exist and vice versa? Really, the explanation is just not there.

Second of all, if Wahl can nullify all particles ranging from MBP to Rune Magic, what about the ethernano particles in the air? What about the ethernano particles in Laxus that make up his magical power? What about Wahl's own MP? That means everything would cease to exist... But conveniently, it only canceled out the MBP and Jutsu Shiki, so something doesn't add up. Which is why I concluded that the whole fight never made sense.

The thing is, Wahl's magic isn't particle nullification or something /that/ profound. It's plain old Weakness Magic.

Wahl isn't only a bad match up for Laxus; he's pretty much a bad match-up for everyone fighting him solo. You can see it right here:

http://www.mangapanda.com/fairy-tail/459/15

Wahl pretty much reveals that he can exploit weaknesses in people and in their attacks. Juvia sizzles against a steambot, Gray's Wahlbot spews out flames, Lisanna faces a steel tank, and Elfman is pitted against a speedster. Wahl is a perfect counter to EVERYBODY, whatever their abilities may be.

In Laxus's case, what Wahl needed to counter and exploit was the rune magic that Laxus set up.

How do you get rid of runes? Either you rewrite them or simply fulfill the condition needed to dispel them. In Laxus's case, the condition was to cancel the MBPs.

Poof, Wahl counters the runes at the cost of cancelling the MBPs and ultimately healing Laxus. It was that simple, tbh. Dunno why people tend to overthink this. :noworry

Really? How does Weakness Magic have anything to do with this situation? Wahl has two types of magic. Nullification Magic and Weakness Magic. Weakness Magic had nothing to do with Laxus except the immunity to lightning. But that is a different topic. The nullification aspect is what I'm talking about here. Like you said, there are only two conditions in which you could dispel Rune Magic. The first being that you satisfy its rules. The second being that you are able to create a new one. None of which applies to the canceling of Magic Barrier Particles.

You're missing the point. I'm not arguing about whether the condition to nullify the Magical Barrier Particles satisfied the rules or not. I'm simply asking how was he able to cancel out two different types of magic with totally opposite effects. The fact that both coincidentally had similar names should not be a factor when they aren't even remotely the same in context.
