Uhmm you really think natsu failed miserably?
Just TRY to compare the situations

Natsu:
Natsu easily took out about 1000 soldiers and Zeref showed up to fight him. You say he failed miserably against the 1.000.000 army BUT (as we all know zeref is like the smartest charakter in ft) Zeref just outsmarted him. Imagine what would have happened if Zeref didn't order Invel and the soldiers to make some place. So many soldiers would've been turned to ashes. And probably invel. And now say again he failed miserably.. He was actually able to beat zeref just the fact that happy stopped him made his plan fail. So it means happy is the reason natsu failed to kill zeref.

Laxus:
Laxus went to fight Whal and when he knew his magic wouldn't affect whal then why didn't the "smart" laxus change places with someone? I mean do you really think laxus planned to heal himself by puttin the anti magic particles in his attack? I don't. He isn't that smart. I personally think most mages don't really know anything about anti magic particles or anti magic Tumors or whatever ("no mage in ishgar can heal it" granny to natsus tumor) so if NO mage in ishgar can heal it. Not even the mages that studyed healing magic and spent their whole life on it... Do you really think some muscels for brain guy like laxus gets the idea of healing himself like that? Never.
And if you're smart you make a smarter move by sending someone to battle who is in better conditions of fighting the enemy. Laxus's chance of winning was practically 0%. He just had LOTS of luck. Nothing more, nothing less...
Uhmmm, his goal was to kill Zeref, Zeref is still alive, therefore he failed......... it's that simple.
As I already explained, Laxus went to fight Wahl so that he could heal himself, who the hell else could have healed Laxus' illness? He literally went to take out Wahl for revenge, why the hell else would you explain him putting up the barrier, it's in the manga, you can think whatever the hell you want but the fact is that Laxus' plan worked to perfection while Natsu failed to kill Zeref.

Laxus targeted Wahl to get rid of the particles.

There was a small discussion on who was the smartest over on reddit and this is what I put.

    • Lucy - Book and Street smart. She is good at analyzing her opponents and quick in using her wit to create opportunity for her team to do lethal damage.
    • Natsu - Street smart af. (Deduced the there was a leak in the Council, destroyed the Pyramid on Galuna Island so the moon drip wouldn't affect Deloria, was able to find out Sting's and Rogue's fighting habits, and was able to find counters to Jackal's curse and Zancrow's
    • Mirajane - shown too have a lot of knowledge of magic and is very intuitive in romance ;)
    • Laxus - used tactical thinking in his fight with Wahl and coordinated the Battle of Fairy Tail (he would've won too if his heart was in it)
    • Gray - Uses tactics in most of his fights to make up for the difference in power
    • Erza - makes full use of her armors by applying the amour to the specific situation where it'd hold an advantage over the opponent
    • Makarov - is very keen on magical knowledge and knows a lot of historic stuff
    • Mavis - Fairy Tail Tactician. She is very knowledgeable in the art of war and has been accredited to won many wars because of her leadership. She also is very knowledgeable in most forms of magic.
    • Zeref - Knowledgeable in all forms of magic and has shown to be very versed not only magic but also warfare, politics, and science. He is prodigy in pretty much everything he does and has over 400 years of exp.
    • August - As the Magic King he has knowledge of every form of magic in existence and can even utilize more magic forms than even Zeref himself.
    • Wahl - Very knowledge in both science and magic and he has been shown to utilize weaknesses very tactically in battle.
    • Mard Geer - Vast knowledge in tactics and is very knowledgeable of the history in FT
    • Levy - Has a lot of knowledge in literature and mathematics.
    • Celestial Spirit King - Governs a whole dimension and has vast knowledge of history

    • Dragons - A very intelligent species with vast amount of historical knowledge as well as magical knowledge.
The order I put the characters were at random and it was to show that many characters in FT would be defined as smart but it also highlights that intelligence is define in many ways. The smartest character overall would be Zeref and the runner up would be Lucy as they both have shown to be able to utilize the most forms of intelligence in the series according to feats.
Intelligence is a very subjective matter but no one in Fairy Tail is truly stupid (like some were saying). Everyone has their ups and down in terms of their mental strengths and just because you're weak in some subjects compared to others does not make you stupid.

Natsu had Igneel's power behind him. Of course he would feel justified in taking on Zeref and his army head on. Zeref even thought it was possible he could have died. There was simply no way Natsu could have predicted that he would die if he killed Zeref. Natsu isn't super smart, but trying to spin this as an example of him being super dumb isn't fair either. Laxus wanted to take down Wahl for what he did to Freed and the others. I buy that he showed quick thinking by tricking Wahl into dispelling the MPB, but I don't believe for a second that he went after Wahl just to get himself healed. If everything went Laxus' way from the beginning, he would have just beaten Wahl to a pulp.

Nobody said anything about Laxus having zero intelligence or no brain whatsoever. Let's set the record straight because there is seemingly a confusion here.

DISCUSSION RECAP
  1. Argument: Freed has shown more Impressive Feats than Kagura
  2. Counter-Argument: Kagura is far More Powerful than Freed by Feats Alone
  3. Discussion: Freed is S-Class Level
  4. Argument: Freed is not S-Class Level (Only Someone like Natsu and Gray Are)
  5. Counter-Argument: Natsu is not S-Class Level (Gray and Freed Are)
  6. Discussion: Natsu is Qualified for S-Class because he is like Laxus (S-Class) in Attack Power and Intelligence
  7. Argument: Laxus' Intelligence Level

I agree with one of your statements which is the fact that Intelligence is Relative. This means that it has to be compared to another sample whether it is the average intelligence of a single person, a group of people, or all the characters in the series. That is the reason why I compared Laxus to the likes of Natsu when it came to knowledge. I never said Laxus has a brain similar to a rock or something.

Anyways, I don't quite agree with your statement that just because you're weak in some subjects, it doesn't mean you have low intelligence. While that holds true for most characteristics, if you're weak mentally, then you have low intelligence. And what is wrong with that if it is true? Let's stop being politically correct and truthfully analyze the characters. Some characters are portrayed to be smarter than others. Just like how some are depicted to be stronger. Hiro Mashima did that on purpose because that is what makes character development. Nobody is perfect. I mean if we couldn't tell who is smarter than who, then we shouldn't even be arguing power level rankings because nobody is stronger than anybody. The fact here is that intelligence is incorporated into measuring power levels so although you might not excel in one stat, you will have others that balance it out...

Now going back to your list.

  1. Lucy - Being academically smart doesn't matter here. The purpose for using "intelligence" in this thread is to determine one's power which is clearly not her high point. I will say that the tactic Lucy used against Jacob was quite smart so she doesn't have low intelligence. She does have some emotional problems though.
  2. Natsu - Portrayed to be reckless, hot-headed, and clueless. The fact that he has a few semi-intelligent feats (with luck) still doesn't make him anywhere near the level for high intelligence.
  3. Mirajane - Neutral. Not many feats. But she isn't depicted to have low intelligence. In fact, her job as Makarov's reliable assistant tells us otherwise.
  4. Laxus - Same with Natsu in a sense that 1 or 2 feats doesn't really boost him to the level of being smart. He has actions similar to Natsu and Hiro Mashima purposely portrays him to be like Natsu in a sense.
  5. Gray - Hiro Mashima goes out of his way to show Gray's intelligence. Gray has actual feats of it and this isn't really debatable.
  6. Erza - Similar to Gray. Shown to have very intelligent feats and the author goes out of his way to do this. She can be used for comedic reliefs and has a crazy personality at times but the amount of intelligent feats she has compensates for that. So, she either has average or high intelligence (leaning high intelligence) but nothing lower.
  7. Makarov - Quite intelligent. Has feats. Isn't portrayed to have little knowledge.
  8. Mavis - Same as Makarov. She probably has more intelligence than him because Hiro Mashima emphasizes her knowledge a little more.
  9. Zeref - Somewhat intelligent. Has been living for a long time and is shown to know a lot of magics. His unstable mind is what makes him less intelligent but he is definitely not anywhere near low intelligence.
  10. August - Portrayed to be intelligent.
  11. Wahl - Wasn't potrayed to be intelligent. In fact, it was the other way around. His feats prove that he isn't that smart.
  12. Mard Geer - Was portrayed to be smart. His lies doesn't make him less intelligent because he did that on purpose to gain followers. It was actually a smart plan.
  13. Levy - Similar to Lucy in the aspect of her academic intelligence.
  14. Celestial Spirit King - Unknown. Can't hype him to be something he isn't.
  15. Dragons - Believed to have some knowledge. Not sure if we could classify them as very intelligent creatures. They are definitely strong though.

This is how I see it without any bias involved.

Yes they are both similar in smarts but that doesn't mean others like Gray and Erza are really above them. Laxus knew a lot of about the position as Master when he tried to takeover the Guild and he also was the one who lead the battle against Fairy Tail.

Being weak in a couple subjects does not mean you have low intelligence as there plenty of other forums that make up for it. I actually don't agree with that. Natsu may be shown to be stupid for comedic purposes but he's at least almost if not as smart as Gray by feats. Natsu deduced that there was someone in the council that leaked the whereabouts of the former and current council members while the others were still clueless on that fact but that doesn't immediately make him smarter than Gray because Gray also has thing he upped Natsu with mental wise. If we take out the comedic effect then Natsu "smarts" wouldn't be used as comic relief. Person A being smart in one subject while person B is weaker in that subject does not mean that person A is smarter as person B might be smarter in other subjects then person

  2. Natsu - He's portrayed to be that but only lived up to his hotheadedness and recklessness. He has shown many times to know the situation more than even others that were portrayed to be smarter.
  3. Mira - Yeah.
  4. Laxus - Despite his whole only the strong are allowed spiel he actually was knowledgeable on the Master position and would have gotten it if he actually the heart to go through with his plan. He has shown two at of four the four fights to have plan against the people he'd battle.
  5. Gray - Pretty much.
  6. Erza - Agreed.
  7. Makarov - Agreed.
  8. Mavis - Agreed.
  9. Zeref - Not somewhat intelligent, he is very intelligent. Doesn't matter if he's kind of psychotic and unstable with Ankhseram Curse that doesn't actually hinder how smart he it just hinders some of his decision that pertain more to his heart. He created an entire running and functional empire that's on a continental scale and created weaponry that is much more sophisticated than his competitions. His knowledge in magic itself is unparalleled.

  11. Wahl - He was smart but more like a computer. He just wasn't good under pressure however.
  12. Mard Geer - Agreed.
  13. Levy - Agreed.
  14. Celestial Spirit King - Governs an entire world and has much knowledge in history as he's been alive for it. Not to mention every spirit loves their King and are at peace with laws he's created and enforced. You have to be smart to solely Govern an entire civilization and keep peace among all the citizens of the Spirit World.
  15. Dragons - They've been stated multiple times to have been a highly intelligent species.
This is how I see it without any bias involved.
Well this how I see it objectively.

I guess you have your opinion and I have mine. But I don't see how someone like Natsu/Laxus are on the same level of intelligence as Gray/Erza. They are clearly inferior in that respect just like how Gray/Erza lose to them in other stats. Like I said, Hiro Mashima purposely makes Natsu and Laxus the type of characters that usually don't use their minds in battles. I think there is a misunderstanding here. When I said subjects, I was distinguishing the difference between academics as a whole and tactic/strategy. For example, if characters like Gray weren't proficient at reading/writing, I wouldn't count that against his intelligence. This thread is where we discuss power ranking so that automatically implies that we're referring to the type of intelligence that determines one's overall power level. So my point was that if you're weak in academics, that doesn't necessarily mean you have low intelligence. On the other hand, if you're weak with determining your opponent's weaknesses or getting caught in battle often, then that will impact your intelligence.

Yeah, I agree that Natsu was smart for noticing that the former council chairman was working with Tartaros but like I mentioned, Natsu only has a few of those feats similar to that of Laxus. If you look at the number of intelligent feats from Gray/Erza, it definitely outnumbers Natsu's and Laxus' feats and by quite a bit. This is exactly my point. We both agree that intelligence is relative. So if Erza and Gray are considered to have average-high intelligence based on the number of intelligent feats they have, then it is only logical for Natsu/Laxus to be below that level of intelligence by a decent margin. The comedy scenes that come from Natsu does indeed lower his intelligence but even if we were to negate that, Natsu still doesn't come close to Erza or Gray.

Fair enough. I can see why you would classify some of those feats from other characters as "intelligent". Although I still happen to disagree, we'll just leave it at that. In order for me to give credit to characters for their intelligence, it has to be clearly depicted preferably by feats, as I cannot base it off of assumptions and hype.

To explain even further, here is the problem I have with Natsu and Laxus. Neither of them tend to think straight or think ahead. This can be a major problem when you are in a battle or confrontation. They have tunnel vision where once they are fixated on an idea, they will go forward with it regardless if they are wrong or the facts are right in front of them.

Natsu

Laxus

Aside from the comedy, you can tell that they are being portrayed as the type of characters who don't understand the importance/severity of a situation or the consequences following it.

Again, there is nothing wrong with this. Just like how Acnologia is portrayed to be stronger than virtually every other character in the series. Each character has their pros and cons. That is what determines one's power level. Natsu and Laxus have their own advantages. For example, they are shown to have one of the highest attack powers among most members in the guild. So the fact that Hiro Mashima depicts Natsu and Laxus to be quite low in intelligence is completely fine.

I meant the argument side for the 2, 4, 6 in the recap (the in favor for S-Class Natsu).

Okay I get what you mean now. Though I do think Makarov called Laxus an idiot for fighting his family and endangering civilians.

I see what you mean with Natsu and Laxus part as they don't start the battle using strategy unless their power alone isn't sufficient enough to beat the enemy while Gray/Erza type characters usually involve strategy from the start of mostly every of their battles. I mostly agree with everything you stated.

Lyon said that in GMG.Apart from that he has shown high intelligence in battle like destroying Jupiter cannon in his fight with Totomaru,Atlas Flame.
None of those show high intellect.

I already explained this but I'll be glad to repeat myself. Nobody was fooled. Look at Carla's face. She knew something was up with Laxus and that his reason for leaving was quite suspicious. The fact that Laxus eats a bear wouldn't make him have low intelligence, if it actually happened. If you actually understand the context of the scene, you can tell that Gray doesn't literally mean Laxus would eat a bear. In fact, he didn't even know what Laxus was doing. Gray's statement was just a way of telling us that Laxus would probably do something like that. It was an exaggeration that is meant to portray Laxus' character so that we as readers know his kind of personality. The whole panel was mainly drawn to depict that Laxus isn't the intelligent type.
Nobody was fooled? Lol that's why nobody but Gray went after him, just because you're suspicious by something doesn't mean you're not fooled LMAO. NOTHING from that scene shows Laxus has low intelligence at all, Gray exaggerating his personality doesn't prove that.

By not checking on Laxus, that doesn't mean they were fooled. They probably just wanted to leave him alone (maybe out of fear). On the other hand, Gray probably made a move to satisfy his own curiosity (maybe he was bored hanging around with the others). You can have your own interpretation of the scene but I see this as a way of giving us insight into Laxus' intelligence or personality in general.

Yes, it does, if there's something wrong with him or something which would cause them to act weird you're saying they wouldn't check up on him? :lmao This is the nakama based manga you're not fooling anyone. Carla was suspicious at the best. 'Your own interpretation' If that's the best you can throw I'll take this as you conceding. If you can't write anything good don't reply back to me.

Who said there was something wrong with Laxus? All they knew at the moment was that Laxus is running off somewhere but they didn't believe his excuse for it. Like I said, Gray checked up on him for his own reasons. The others probably were too busy doing other stuff, or maybe they didn't care because they didn't see it as something that is concerning. But what is your point? You may think they were fooled. I don't happen to believe so but that is a matter of interpreting Hiro Mashima's portrayal.

Laxus was ill and there's obviously something wrong if he randomly runs off somewhere. His own reasons, no he checked up because he wasn't fooled by Laxus' excuse. The rest of what you said was baseless dribble, busy doing what? Camping, singing songs by the campfire? Yeah keep on posting things like this and all you're get is sarcasm back from me. Like I said you're reaching and have nothing to fall back on.

No, that is exactly my point. Based on the panel, it seems everyone is used to Laxus running off by himself. To them, it was normal, that is why nobody cared. The only thing that registered in their minds is the excuse Laxus made but they figured he would be alright by himself because that is who he is. Gray went to Laxus for reasons that nobody knows except Gray himself and Hiro Mashima. When I said the others were doing other stuff, I'm talking more like deciding sleeping arrangements, eating, gossiping about other members, devising a plan, or something Gray was not particularly interested in.

Tbh, this whole debate on whether character X is dumb or not is pointless. Obviously people interpret certain scenes differently, so not everyone is gonna come to an agreement on this topic.

I personally think that characters like Laxus and Natsu aren't as dumb as some people think. Natsu always does/says idiotic stuff outside of battle for comedic purposes, but in battles he's a genius. In other words, I think it's fair to say he has low intelligence outside of battles and high intelligence in battles. Laxus does not do the same idiotic things that Natsu do, but because he has a temper and is very hot-blooded like Natsu people think that he's as dumb as Natsu outside of battles. There's no proof that he's has low intelligence outside of battle but there is proof that he has high intelligence in battles. Conclusion: Neither of these two should be classified under the "no intelligence" category.

That's enough of me ranting for now. No one necessarily has to agree with me on this since I did say that it's usually pointless to try and convince others to change their view on certain scenes that portray characters.

Both would have brushed off the attack that one shot him. :cookiehand
Not debating Grand Chariot one-shotting them. The energy output necessary to disperse clouds across the horizon is huge, and Jellal could use that energy for attacks.

What's more powerful - Grand Chariot or Dispersing the sky?

If clearing the skies amplifies Jellal's attacks somehow then my question is probably null as they aren't mutually exclusive; but even then I would put GC above because it's a spell being amplified. For now I believe that the sky splitting feat is merely a showcase of Jellal's improved power with Heavenly Body magic in much the same way as Natsu has melted the GMG and evaporated Lake Sciliora.

Also in the same way as Natsu, I class the spells feats as more powerful than the power portrayals like evaporating a lake. It's very impressive that the heat of his presence alone can do that in FDKM, but it's not as impressive as Demolishing Strike. With Jellal, the starry sky feat was impressive too, but GC oneshotting Neinhart would require more effort and is also more impressive (Jellal easily dispersed the skies but was panting after GC). And the fact that it was Grand Chariot, and not Sema, is also impressive.

On the basis of defeating Spriggans, Demolishing strike, Red Lightning and GC are probably around the same level.
