I just want to start off & say that flaws are ofcourse subjective. Okay, I decided to make a thread that people could address some flaws of the story & ways to make this great manga even greater!

I love this manga but as more chapters release it's strengths & flaws become more noticeable. Alright, I love the large cast & it's one of my favorite parts of the manga, especially since the author doesn't seem overwhelmed including them.

I think a flaw of the manga is that there aren't many 3-Dimensional characters & ofcourse it seems natural with the large cast, but I've noticed several places where Horikoshi can work smarter & not harder.

Like when the class moved into their dorm rooms, I have no idea why this wasn't used as short character development for a lot of the characters. I feel like alot of characters aren't more than what meets the eye, they're quirky & have appeal though. Their rooms just reflected their outward appearances though

I feel like I don't actually know much about characters that are seen pretty often, part of the reason why I think Horikoshi's twitter drawings actually enrich them a bit. I don't even expect him to develop everyone to the same extent

I just feel like Midoriya, Bakugo, All Might, Stain & to a lesser extent Todoroki & Iida, Kirishima too.

Recently Mirio & Amajiki seem to develop nicely off of each other.

Little things in the story could build on them, without slowing the pace too much. Like imagine if Kirishima was actually into something girly, that would make for a funny, interesting scenario & if someone knew their interaction could build a little character.

Momo, Jiro, Kaminari, & Tokoyami have a lot of untapped character, & I know he's probably going to give them their time to shine eventually personality wise. Just think there's been some missed opportunities to develop the side characters while keeping Midoriya the focus.

If you have any critiques on the manga or responses, I would love to hear them. This is an amazing manga with even more potential than I initially anticipated.

More slice of life, that's mostly it. Either these moments are too short(to me) or there is some trouble and the students are forced to fight. I like seeing the different interactions between them.

It is not easy to use a large cast well, I would not say that Horikoshi is bad at it but I don't think he is that good either.

I think there should be a main group. The manga as of now doesn't have a fixed main group, but rotate the students every arc.
Although its purpose is to develop side characters, some students included in the main group don't do that much. Momo and Kouda come to mind. On the other hand, the "main cast" of Ochako and Iida are quite undeveloped due to this system.

Too much dialogue in the manga, it gets annoying following conversations and who's saying what sometimes. The big cast problem will be valid if we don't get screentime from side characters in the following arcs, the Big 3 are getting great development right now. More slice of life to get more life and characterizations from some of the main cast, we have some really good characters but most are just personalities, just give them more one on one time is all I mean.

I don't think a main group is possible since they are students and we have five main characters among them, they team up with some others depending on the situation. Maybe there could be something similar if there is long training about hero teams like the Pussycats later but it would not be permanent. Some students might form teams in the future when they will become pros but I don't see Deku, Bakugou, Todoroki or Iida not having their own offices.

Too many sub-plots were introduced too early and will most likely never be answered, answered too late in the future, or answered at the very end of the manga.
  • Who is the nameless villain at the end of chapter 59? Wasn't he supposed to become a member of the League? Months passed in the story since he heard the news about Stain's arrest and smiled creepily. What did he do all these months, just sit in the forest and continue smiling?
  • Who, what and where is the current No.2 (former No.3) hero? He was never present in any thing, not even in the biggest battle against All For One where every Top 5 hero was present except for him. The hero ranking gets updated twice a year so the current No.2 must have done something since Deku enrolled in U.A. to keep his ranking, but there is no information about the No.2 having ever done anything. Does he even exist in the universe of the manga?
  • Who are the other people in the "ranking of heroes who look like villains"?
  • What happened with Camie? Is she dead? Is Toga still impersonating her at Shiketsu High? If not does nobody at Shiketsu care about Camie suddenly disappearing?
  • Why did the winged Noumu try to take away Deku? According to this page Noumus don't act without orders so someone must have ordered him to take away Deku. Was it Shigaraki, All For One or someone else? Why did they just want him? Did All For One already know at that point that Deku has One For All? Wouldn't Shigaraki rather order the Noumu to kill Deku instead of taking him away? What could someone else want with Deku?
  • Is Best Jeanist still alive? Is he still the No.4 hero or did his rank go up with All Might's retirement? Can he even continue to work as a hero?
  • What are the One For All ghosts exactly? Why did All Might not tell Deku the whole truth? Was anything he said about the ghosts true?
  • What is happening with Endeavor as the unwanted No.1 hero? Only a small percentage of society accepts him as the new No.1. What are the effects of this on society? What are the psychological effects on Endeavor who didn't want the position this way and became the punching bag of society?
  • What is Dabi trying to achieve by killing anyone he thinks isn't good enough? Is he still part of the League? If so why doesn't he react to the Broker's calls and takes part in important meetings like with Overhaul in the warehouse?
  • Is Twice the original Twice or is he just the only copy who survived?
  • What happened with the search for the traitor? The faculty knows about the problem for a while now, but there is still no known progression other than that the dorms are a step to find the possible traitor if he is a student.
  • What is the exact meaning of this one panel flashback? Did Shigaraki kill his "father" and is since then putting that hand on his face?
  • Why isn't there Hagakure's name on the board? Deku got 3 votes (his own, Urarakas' and Iida's), Momo got 2 votes (her own and Todoroki's), and everyone else voted for themselves. That only makes 19 votes in a classroom with 20 people.

The list goes on and just gets bigger with every new chapter.

Don't forget that average lifespan of epic shonen manga is 10+ years so there still plenty of time manga isn't ending any time soon. As for story itself. First hundred chapters was basically introduction of characters forming initial links between them, setting worlds rules and establishing conflicts. Now it's time for world building and expansion, UA isn't the only heroes school around, VA isn't the only criminal organisation, conflicts are progressing and evolving. Characters establishing new relationships, and develop old ones, etc. It's still plenty of time for story progress.

Agreed! I would love more slice of life in between the missions. After major arcs would be the perfect time to do a few slice of life chapters, it would also give people fond feelings about the class as a whole & that could naturally extend these feelings into major arcs as well. I think it'd be nice downtime for the characters along with the readers.

Hm, I hadn't considered that at all. Now I'm wondering some of the same things lol, I think some of these will be revealed eventually & some may go unanswered. I didn't realize there were this many things up in the air, I think the One for All ghosts, Nameless Villain & Other ranked heroes will show up eventually & probably will be done well.

Twice's story is really interesting lol, that chapter was great for him. I'm very interested in how Endeavor's handling being the no. 1 Hero & the people too! I also forgot about the search for the traitor...it'll probably pop up again, I'm sure I'm not the only one who forgot though. Great points

Yeah, that's true. I'm glad this manga is doing well, I would love for it to have a long life. I really enjoy the world building too, learning the depths of the hero world & the in's & outs is really cool. Thanks for the response! There is plenty of time you're right, I'm actually not too concerned with the story itself. I think the author's doing great in most of the story & progression there, the structure of the world is nice! It's mostly character building that has me curious.

I think some nice slice of life chapters between major arcs could go a long way & kinda keep a similar pace for the story, which is very nice. Thank you guys for discussing!!

To be fair half of those sub-plots have good enough hints for us viewers to reach a conclusion, camie for instance is obviously dead because Toga is a serial killer she wouldnt spare anyone in her way if this was a seinen we would've seen caimie's body, about twice we will never know the truth, and in all honesty it does little eff on his character besides being used as a excuse to justify him being warped, thats supposed to be left ambigous until some possible character development happens to him, and even then I'd rather it remained ambigous.
Now about cases like jeanist horikoshi clearly fucked a bit when AFO coming into action was revealed he went for a the heroes killed in a flash!? End panel phrase and it didnt match the reality that not only they all survived but jeanist wasnt even killed or anything, I think he was just sent to the hospital or something with severe injuries, still unreasonable hype is easily bad hype in my book.

The main issues I find with the series is the overhype it uses to drive itself upon any villain who is supposed to be considered a big deal is straight up compared to AM by many characters and ends up delivering poorly, compared to the supposed tension it should bring upon, then there's also the OFA usage Deku does cant say it's the best thing ever and his ability to go to higher % output whenever he's in danger to one shot his enemies is plain lazy writting it ruins the tension regardless of the consequences that are put on deku at the end of the day he will hardly have any serious competition as soon as he gets serious with OFA. Also the 100000000% thing, lets not even get in those waters...

Yeah I do see Camie being dead but ShenGao brings up a valid point, why doesn't anyone from Shiketsu care for her absence now that she's currently missing? Hairy dude just told Deku she's been acting funny lately, since then it's been no initiative to actually see what's up with her. Plotlines that I see being uncovered within the series that aren't still too late are OFA ghosts, Top 5 Pro hero ranking (with this Best Jeanist will have spotlight on his situation), the traitor, and the current villains from the alliance who are outsourcing and branching off to increase their morale

I am sure Camie is dead, there was no one to stop Toga and she is a serial killer. Her absence must have been noticed, but UA students are not aware of it. Though they took the test at the same place both schools are not in the same sector. UA is in the east and Shiketsu the west. The pros from there are probably investigating. Considering the Villain Alliance actions they might have already guessed that it was Toga, assuming they know her Quirk.

I mean, if there was more slice of life, wouldn't be there lot's of complaints about the pacing? Sometimes the pace is slow (I like it), if Horikoshi took more time to the school life and so on, damn, there would be sooo many chapters without the "main plot" advancing.

Regarding the topics listed by @ShenGao, there's some nitpicking there. It's nice to have some of those questions not answered! We don't need it all! C'mon, why do we need to know the top heroes who look like villains?? That's just for the sake of curiosity, that's a side note.

Of course, some stuff (like the villain from 59) will probably be forgotten for ever. But that happens, let's move on.

Sometimes I wish the chapters were even longer. The amount of information in them is quite high comparing to other shounens. And I want more.

To be honest, I assumed the villain in chapter 59 got changed into Muscle. I forgot what the basis of that theory was, but that's what I assumed and I just accepted it.

I agree with some of flaws about the lack of dimension in the character. I don't think they are completely flat though. Maybe more like 2.5 dimensional. I'd say he's laid groundwork for half of them at least where we can see inklings of where their motivations lie and where they have the potential to go.

I imagine, by series end, all of them will have at least one chapter devoted to them like Can't Stop Twinkling and Mineata did. Not to mention they might be involved in another major arc like Kirishima and Tsuyu are in this arc.

I definitely agree with more slice of life chapter. Imagine if we spent a couple more chapters at the mall before showing Shirigaki.

I don't think there would be too many complaints about the pacing, Boku no Hero Academia has a pretty fast pace already (I may be biased...I've read One Piece for a long time lol). I don't think they should necessarily fill it up with slice of life chapters, but like 2-5 chapters after the major arcs would probably only help the reader care about the individuals in the class more. I know they're hero students, they spend so much time around each other that I really want to see it.

I do sometimes wish the chapters were longer lol thats a testament to how the author is great at drawing us in with both story & art.

Yeah, I don't think he does a great job at having a lot of characters in the series, I wouldn't necessarily call them flat either. It's just that when I think about the class sometimes, I realize that I only really know like a handful of characters outside of their charming short lines. He's doing a pretty nice job with how large the cast is. I really like Kirishima & Tsuyu, I feel like the moments we get to see them gradually just add to their character & makes them a bit more 3 Dimensional everytime, so they stand out from a good amount of the class.

Yeah, it'd be awesome to see the characters enjoy their time at the mall, I feel it would've even empowered that moment we saw Shigaraki. The contrast between everyday life & the hero world could also appreciated from a Slice of Life element, & it would help show how special the UA & other hero students are to choose & follow through with that path. It'd be pretty awesome. Thank you guys for discussing!

True, but should mention longer isn't always better. I like info dumps personally, chapters where you just learn alot of new shit. But the current arc and some from the provisional license arc have had alot of chapters in succession that they do nothing but talk. While it's not a huge issue if you understand the entirety of the situation and why it's necessary (example: Nighteye's convening of all the heroes to explain the conundrum, who will be doing what, and to balance the scales is completely understandable) it can be lowkey annoying when you have one action scene within 5-6 chapters... it can get slow even if the actual pace within the series isn't. I've noticed that this is a recent issue as well cause everything I recall is coming from the current and previous arc.

Everything ShenGao wrote was accurate with story-valid plotholes being undiscovered, however it's some nitpicking like Aonori said, some are more prevalent than others while some are just gonna never be touched on. As we grow older we notice these subtle issues more often than not, to me MHA hasn't truly experienced any eye-popping issues, the most criticism it received was from the provisional license arc being it was repetitive and lower quality than previous arcs but I still liked it, the author just has to pick and choose these spots.

Me personally think the major flaws of the series is to large a cast like most everyone seems to agree upon, long drawn out conversations that don't really need to be shown in full or at all really (for example when Mirio, All Might, and Deku sat down and talked about Deku interning with Sir that didn't really need a full chapter to itself maybe a quarter of a chapter at most), not showing, referencing, and/or the students actually learning things in class as far as heroing goes as well as them actually using what they learn(I mainly thought this was an issue within the current arcs beginning with the Eri, Mirio, and Deku fiasco when Overhaul showed up), and this is more of just a my own personal flaw within the series, that others may not think, but change Deku as a character a bit more no more feeling sorry for himself, and finally get over the whole 'my control slipped on OFA so I used more then my limit I broke myself again' I know hw hasn't done it for a while but it shouldn't have happened even if it was necessary the 5% - 8% thing should've come into play there not a whole arc later.

To me the biggest annoyance in the series remains deku and his training arcs. Normally I love training arcs in manga. They explain the world and abilities of the cast. It shows the MC's struggles. But somehow BNHA fails spectacularly at this. Well, not somehow, the issue is specifically how OFA works. Realistically speaking OFA was essentially "mastered" the day deku used his full cowl. It was kind of a dumb development but one that made sense in the context of the story that deku would have an easier time using all of full cowl at once than merely over a part of his body. But that is it when it comes to OFA, the quirk at that point is literally already fully mastered. OFA is merely physical enhancement and there is not a speck of evidence anywhere to reasonably assume that there might be even more nuance to it. And deku needed that because he wasn't physically strong enough to handle it when he received it. If deku had been physically more powerful he wouldn't even have had to train for it. Heck, the manga even makes the point that allmight never had to do the training bits midoriya did because he was always powerful. And since then we have had some development regarding shoot style which was.... midoriya figuring out he could kick? Come on, that's not a development. That's not a thing. The manga presented midoriya figuring out he could kick in the same manner as naruto learning the rasengan or ichigo learning getsuga tensho.

The manga keeps pretending OFA is a quirk which has nuanced to it when it in fact does not have any. It is literally the easiest quirk in the world and it literally gives more power than any other quirk in the world. So much power in fact that AFO used god knows how many strength enhancing quirks against a half dead allmight that had long given up the power and he still did not quite match up to it.

Early in the manga the point was made, repeatedly, that the world is not fair, That midoriya knew for a fact that not everyone was born the same. The manga should embrace that along the fact that midoriya for no other reason than a whim of a misguided god among ants received the power to stand atop of all heroes. It should embrace the fact that midoriya's quirk requires a fraction of the work and effort that his peer's quirks require. If we consider that allmight didn't have to go through the stuff midoriya is going through now because he was physically strong to begin with (according to torino anyways) then there even is an actual possibility that midoriya in his current state has already mastered the quirk to a point far beyond what allmight ever needed to. Allmight never had to restrain the quirk to not hurt himself after all.

Screw the kicks or shoot style or whatever it is deku is doing, it doesn't affect OFA either way. Soon enough deku will be able to flick his fingers at superspeed with each flick generating a powerful explosion. And that is him going easy, he could do the same with his fists for much greater power and from a greater distance.

The manga needs to stop presenting deku as if he was just one of the kids struggling to master his quirks. He isn't. His quirk is already mastered as much as he ever will need to. Perhaps once he becomes physically powerful enough he won't even need to practice the stuff he has been doing up to this point so his current mastery of suppressing OFA will be irrelevant. The manga needs to embrace how fundamentally cynical it is at heart.

You're trying to make your own criteria for what mastering OfA is when the fact of the matter is that Deku has not mastered OfA and is not even close to doing so. Mastering OfA would mean that Deku would be able to use the FULL EXTENT of OfA without ANY crippling side effects. Full extent even including the things about OfA we don't know about, including the OfA ghosts and what that entails, and other stuff we don't know right now. That is not up for debate. Mastering OfA is not just learning a technique to properly make use of the power. That's like saying you've suddenly learned how to kick a ball properly when you've been kicking a ball with the back of your foot. Basically, you've been doing it wrong the whole time until now. Great, now you know how to kick a ball the proper way, that doesn't mean you've mastered shit. There are so many more nuances (yes, OfA does have nuance just from the fact that you can control the percentage of power AND what part of the body you want to apply it on, and this is without even knowing the full extent of OfA), techniques, and applications (full cowl) that come that you'll need to learn to master ball handling, its absurd to even think one would even be close to mastering it.

It sounds to me like you're just mad that Shoot Style wasn't some cool ability like Rasengan or Getsuga Tenshou, even though it was "presented as such", when that wasn't what Deku needed right then and there. Let's not conviently forget or remove context. Also, the manga says that its world is not fair, but the outlook is a positive one. You can see this all over the manga. From how sincere a lot of character motivations are, and how much of this manga is about how people inspire others, you're literally hoping for the manga to embrace something that its outlook goes against.

Don't think this is really a flaw, there's no indication that these won't be answered. Stone guy has already appeared more and there's kinda pressing matters in the manga now to deal with.

I am not making up any criteria for OFA or anything of the sort. My issue here is specifically that none of the steps deku has taken towards mastering his quirk are really... well, things. I agree with the bit about what it means to master the quirk, my issue here is that every time deku makes some progress the manga treats it as if deku found higgs bosom under his laundry and can suddenly throw it at enemies as a rasengan.

As for the bold part, what are you talking about? Things we don't know? Ghosts? The manga has never made the point there could be more than super strength to the quirk. If anything it has consistently made the point that OFA is just super strength and nothing more. We have seen allmight use the quirk a number of times and he never even vaguely alluded to there being more to it. Deku is not about to start shooting laser beams nor flying with the quirk. At this point OFA is so well established as a super strength quirk that it doing something else would effectively be a retcon. As for the ghosts.... I guess it is technically plausible there could be more to those though it is a bit of a stretch to suggest they could be a fighting skill. They seem to be just memories within the quirk after all.

As for the nuances you describe, OFA doesn't have them. More importantly, it can't have them. The issue here is not deku having insufficient technique to use the quirk effectively. Lack of practice is not the reason his limbs break when he uses too much of it. And skill alone won't make his limbs not crumble if he uses more of it. There is only one thing that currently limits deku's usage of the quirk and that is his physical strength. Nothing more, nothing less. His limbs break when using the quirk not because he lacks skill, they break exclusively because he lacks physical strength. In esence, no amount of skill is going to make deku able to handle OFA at his current strength level. Heck, gran torino made this overwhelmingly clear when he made the point that toshinori never actually had the trouble deku had with the quirk because he was physically powerful to begin with.

Now, that is not to say deku shouldn't learn martial arts to fight or anything of the sort. He needs those to be an effective fighter. However he does not need those to actually use 100% of his quirk.
