I think with Terry, because he was seen as this "Captain Marvel" and role model by the players, the fans loved him and his influence on the pitch. Ever since all the scandals with player's gfs and all the racial accusations, he's lost his standing with the fans, I feel. Whereas Lampard was a goal hero and had never really done anything to let down the team and club, so this whole thing has been a shock to any true Chelsea fan.
