I cant think of anything else but a problematic product. If you followed the instructions correctly to operate it and it still didn't work, I guess there is something wrong with the product. There are some economical readers available on Amazon. You can try one of those. Its as far as I can help you.
True, but then there's also setting up the phoen to the way you want it, which can be a hassle. Installing apps and/or signing in to apps, gotta remember passwords, and the likes.

Easier for you because you have nothing, other than Instagram.
Also, you don't need 10 seconds on SnapChat to show one simple picture. My friend did that, and I SnapChatted him 10 secs of my crotch. Here's your only warning.
