Yeah if you count all the private schools, various religious schools and such then yeah even in the UK it could easily exceed 6 I think. But just publick school wise we've got primary school, secondary school, college/sixth form, university.
well we have a primary school and after that you are sent to one of 4 different school types:

"Hauptschule" (lowest), Realschule (middle), Gymnasium (highest) and Gesamtschule (mix of Realschule/Gymnasium) btw schule = school :D

and there's a school type for handicapped persons.

Is the school you are sent to after primary school dependant on your results and aptitude?

Yeah it is, the class teacher gives a recommendation which school you should go to. You can choose a higher form if you want to but only if your grades allow it. Of course a lower one is allowed too.
Still there's a controversial discussion going on about that system (mainly) because the lowest form has ended as some kind of "garbage-place", where there's not much hope to achieve anything. It's not like this everywhere but it has reached a point were it will slowly become a problem

It's a problem for decades already. With a graduation from an Hauptschule, you hardly get a job or apprenticeship. This system is bullshit and it should be changed as soon as possible.

well it's not like that everywhere (at least I heard that it's different f.ex. in Bayern) but you're right, the system is bullshit. They should change it but I don't see it coming anytime soon because every german state can do what they want. That's the next bullshit, it should be the same everywhere :facepalm

my guess would be at least 15-30 years, they will only change it if the system is at it's bottom.

well it's not as messed up as it sounds, it's no problem as long as you don't cause any.

If you're a big troublemaker, veryyyyy lazy or just dumb you will definitely encounter hardships, more or less depends on which Hauptschule you're going to.
but yeah it's kinda like throwing away everyone who doesn't seem to fit in the system, it's a shame but it will only change if there will be serious problems. It already started and the school system was already changed in parts of germany but it's still in work for most parts.

In france we have 2 specific schools (well at least i think they are specific)
- Maternelles a kind of pre-primary school for children between 3 and 5, you don't have to do it (school is compulsary between 6 and 16) but since it's free, 95% of children do it (according to wikipedia)
- Les grandes écoles (the great schools) can be done instead of university. In fact the best students try them. The entrance is performed through a competitive examination. The more renown is the school, the harder is the exam. Before taking the exam, you generally do a prépa (preparation school) for 2 or 3 years. You work like crazy during these 2 years but the 3 years spent in the school afterwards are generally cool.

Hrm, Germany sounds crazy. Is it like that in the rest of Europe?

As for Australia, there's 2 exams. 1 in year 6, to see if you get into one of those good High schools (otherwise you just go to your local one or a private school) and then there's the year 12 exam, which dictates which Uni's and courses are available to you...rather straightforward, and not too much disadvantage if you screw up in the year 6 one...

For us in the UK you have an exam in year 6 to see determine what tier of classes you'll be in in high school; higher, intermediate or foundation. I can't speak for the rest of Europe.

Just noticed that the registered user's nick colour is now black, I guess the admins realised that the colour was a bit too similar to that of MH Senpai.

In France there is only an exam at the end of highschool, since our classes names are in reverse order, i guess it is the equivalent of class 12. There is one at the end of middle school but you can continue to high school even if you fail it, also it is surely wiser not to since it kinda hard to fail except for those with great difficulties.

I found something has changed, also it is more dark grey than black.

well our system sure seems very complicated in comparison to other countries.

We have only one big exam after year 9 (Hauptschule), year 10 (Realschule) or year 12 (Gymnasium). If you don't have a "Realschule/Gymnasium" degree, it's a sure thing that things will be very difficult after that

well I'm sure it sounds funny for people outside germany :lmao

go at Uni, you need to be finished with studying there to actually make your PhD. There are some exceptions but that's the most common way.

and yeah I know, there's a lot you need to do but that's why german workers are well-received around the world :3c
