CHAPTER 513: I COULDN'T EVEN
This is my third review. Thank you guys for reading my previous review. Anyway, you may find my review for this chapter flooding with pictures. If it annoys you in any way, I apologize for that. I decide to post more pictures seeing its overwhelming value for this chapter.
Too Excited
[/IMG]
Last chapter, we see the CP9 agents working together to defeat the pirates while the crowd cheered for them. This time though, it seemed that the crowd turns scared after seeing the result of Lucci’s “work.” Being regular people, they may not have seen such tremendous casualties done by people who appeared to be the “new heroes” for them. Sure thing, they want the agents to beat the pirates, but to beat them to a pulp to the point that they are bathing their own blood, well, that’s another thing. It seems that the CP9’s moral changes won’t be as fast as we imagine.
This is the panel that proves that Kuma’s appearance creates the same impact as it does to the Strawhats’. Apparently, the Shicibukai’s sudden visit in the island is not in accordance to the government’s order, since they wage a war against the Whitebeards. As Kizaru realizes that the Shichibukai disobeys the orders, he immediately takes the time to disdain the latter, believing “once a pirate, always a pirate” idea. This means that he has a tendency to turn his head against his superiors. But why exactly someone like Kuma would surrender and let himself become the World Government’s subordinate? The actual reason is still in mystery. The only thing that we can guarantee here is that a Shicibukai has his own reasons for swallowing their pirate pride and becoming a part of the World Government…. And he does it for personal gain. While Kuma doesn’t seem selfish and greedy like Crocodile, Gecko Moria, and Blackbeard (who hides behind their title to conquer the world), he definitely uses his position to access information that he can use to help the fellow pirates whom he respects and frees those who don’t deserve the wrath of the government.
Sentoumaru may brag about the security which his “verbal defense” provides, but he is definitely one of those One Piece idiots. However, thanks to his idiocy that we finally get to catch some useful information regarding Kuma’s paws. He states that the people who got vanished by the touch of the paws would be sent somewhere for a journey, for three days and three nights. And that Kuma, being the one responsible for it, is the only one who knows the exact location of his “victims.” His “vanishing” technique is a part of his devil fruit power, where it clearly appears that it’s not just the attacks that he can deflect or transfer one’s pain from another. With a brief tap of his hand, he can transfer a persom to any location Kuma desires, and brings him back anytime the latter wants. This gives us the reaffirmation of the usage of his gloves. Apparently, they are not used as fashion accessory. Since Kuma’s paws grants him the power to “deflect,” “vanish,” and “transfer” an item or a person through touching, he uses his gloves to prevent himself from doing such techniques when it unnecessary. The usage of the bible, on the other hand, remains a mystery to me. But it doesn’t seem to be random though, especially that its design is the same one as the shirt that Kuma wears.
As things become more confusing, Luffy orders everyone to escape first before deducing their next step to save Zoro. Now, we see Usopp taking his role as a support member of their crew. Since he appears to be less helpful when it comes to combat fighting, he lends his aid to Sanji by supporting the latter’s body. Even if Usopp is injured as well, he simply shrugs it off and says it only gets “crazed” by PX-1’s “beam.” This small gesture shows how Usopp tries his best to be reliable when it comes to such times, completely forgetting his lack of brute strength and prioritizing his nakama instead. Furthermore, it is surprising to see the huge progress of his character. Getting mad at Kuma after “attacking” Zoro is a given, but Usopp never falters and doesn’t even show a glimpse of self-doubt when he wasn’t able to do anything to save Zoro.
Last chapter, we saw Chopper reaching his breaking point and resorting to his last resort. But, it seems to me that such reaction is just a beginning from the Strawhats. Being one of the monster trio, Sanji saw Zoro got vanished in an instant. Then, Brooke, decides to “save them even if it costs his life,” so they can run. And, as this afro skeleton begins to crack another dead/skeleton joke, he disappears right before he knows it. Like Chopper, this is too much for Sanji, though their cases are different. Chopper becomes desperate because he lacks the strength to save his nakama. On the other hand, Sanji reaches his breaking point at the sight of two of his nakama vanishing helplessly while he has the strength to save them. So he finally decides to attack him with his kick, despite being completely aware that such plan will result to breaking his bones and leg. But to his dismay, Usopp becomes the third one who vanishes while his kick proves to be nothing comparable to Kuma’s might.
Amidst the Strawhats emotional breaking points, another conspiracy is created. Kuma whispers something to Rayleigh, where the latter appears to be skeptical about it. Whatever it is, it will surely trigger speculations among us fans. Personally, I have made lots of conjectures about this conspiracy. The first thing that pops in my mind as soon as I see Kuma whispering Rayleigh, I think of the former assuring the safety of the crew to Rayleigh. But then again, when I read the Shichibukai saying “even I have doubts about it,” I immediately reject my initial idea. This is because Kuma expresses his doubt about “that matter” and he can never be doubtful to something that he can control (the idea about the vanishing technique of his devil fruit).
As I squeeze for more ideas, the only logical idea that I come up with is a “pirate matters” where Dragon is concerned. I think of it as my most logical guess because Dragon stands as the common link between Rayleigh and Kuma. We got hints that Dragon and Rayleigh may have personal connections back then (suggested at the past chapters). Kuma has the same case where he expresses, that he, too, has personal connections with Dragon (hinted at the chapter “Member of the Strawhats Crew – Pirate Hunter Zoro). With this in mind, I am thinking that Dragon is doing something in his revolutionary which triggers Rayleigh to be interested and skeptical. Even Kuma states his concerns, saying that he is also skeptical. These two guys must have also known each other back then since Rayleigh isn’t doubtful in Kuma himself; he is doubtful in what Kuma says. Furthermore, this brings me to another theory that main purpose of the Shichibukai’s appearance in the island is not to save the Strawhats, but to deliver “that” information to Rayleigh. It just so happens that the Starwhats are there and he decides to make a move in regards with them.
I would also have thought of Whitebeard being the topic of their brief conversation, but since Kuma tells Kizaru that the Marines and the World Government have nothing to do with the former pirates’ concerns, I reject such theory because Whitebeard’s next move will involve the World Government. Besides, Kuma must have gained access regarding the pending war against the World Government and the Whitebeard, so he doesn’t have to be doubtful in such matter.

First, it was Zoro. Usopp immediately gather all the courage he musters to confront the Shichibukai, but the latter remains silent about the swordsman’s whereabouts. Then, Brooke decides to put his life at stake to give an opening to Usopp and Sanji for escape, but immediately vanishes with the briefest stroke of Kuma’s paws. Sanji decides to risk his leg being broken and even cut because of the desperation from failing to save his nakama. His strength gets pointless and it is Usopp’s turn to disappear, and it is his time to fall victim to Kuma’s paws. Franky’s strong right seems powerless and next to the shipwright’s disappearance, Nami becomes completely helpess even when trying to ask Luffy for help. Chopper’s monster point doesn’t save him either and even Robin, who so far has remained calm and collected, turns panic-stricken, and the two of them disappear. I see it fit to make a brief sum-up to the previous incidents and post the panels where the Strawhats’ reaction and disappearance are shown. This is because it all boils down to Luffy’s breaking point. This is the first time we see him falter like that. Yeah, he was really emotional at Usopp’s departure from their crew, but what Luffy feels right now does not even compare to that…. Because this time, it is his responsibility that his crew falls.
At the end of the page, we see a narration saying that on that moment, the Strawhat crew becomes utterly defeated…. And that the crew is shattered. This is a reference to what Zoro said back when Luffy and Usopp fought. I remember Zoro saying something like, “That is what a captain is. Don’t hesitate. Who can we rely on when you falter?” Luffy, being the captain of the crew should not show any sign of hesitation or doubt on his will, but whenever he sees his nakama disappear, his will and strength begin to diminish little by little, which is why he isn’t able to make a quick action to save the remaining ones. Even his Gear Second, the strongest of his technique so far, remain powerless because he lacks the will to back it up. And now that everyone is gone, Luffy begins to doubt himself, and his crew will remain shattered as long as he stays in desperate point.
Kuma’s action in Shabondy Archipelago will create a very strong rippling effect. While I cannot make firm speculations as to what exactly will take place, I can only take a guess that it will affect Kuma, the World Government, the imminent war, and even the Strawhats. Kuma’s status as Shichibukai will be questioned, because from Sentoumaru and Kizaru’s point of view, Kuma appears to aid the pirates ( as stated by Kizaru, saying, “This is quite the problem” and vanquishing PX-1). Besides, Kuma also sets a conspiracy when he and Rayleigh a small discussion without answering the admiral. With this providing strong reasons against his reputation, his status as Shichibukai might be removed, maybe not now (since his help is needed for the war), but in can be strongly probable in the future events. On the other hand, if Kizaru, stands firm on his disapproval and disdain to Kuma, the latter might be removed from his privileges and title as soon as possible. Thus, his lack of presence in this looming war might give another advantage to Whitebeard. Kuma is also responsible for the Strawhats whereabouts. They can be anywhere, but, what he does in Shabondy will instigate either growth or depression among the crew.
While it appears to the entire pirate crew that Kuma sends them to more danger, it appears that he, once again, spares them. His final words to Luffy is a reference that that will be the last aid he’ll give to Strawhats and that Luffy has to gather it together to become a worthy captain. Knowing that Kuma has a strong set of moral, he might send them somewhere much safer. We can gather three ideas from this point: The crew might be at the same place, somewhere safer; each might be sent to different places and searching their nakama will be a sort of a game that can develop them as individuals, as nakama, and as crew; or everyone is in the same place except for Luffy, where he is sent somewhere and he is challenged by Kuma to find and save his nakama in this own. I like to think that the third idea will take place. I guess it’s time for Kuma to test Luffy, especially after seeing Zoro’s strong resolve and seeing Luffy falter. Surely, Kuma must have set some expectations for Luffy, after seeing how intent Zoro was to save his captain back in Thriller Bark and that he leaves such impression as Dragon’s son. And even though Luffy’s emotional breakdown is understandable, he should gain all strength and will that he can muster, because he should prove his worth as captain of such a great crew.
Overall:
This chapter is much more emotional than the previous one. I literally had goosebumps while reading this, especially after seeing how the Strawhats look at the sight of their nakama vanishing. I’ve never seen them in such situation. They might have been emotional in some chapter, but what I see in this chapter does not even compare to the emotional impact that the crew creates. This is Luffy’s most emotional moment and it truly defines him as individual, as a nakama, and as a captain. Oda once again, sets another conspiracy that will shake us all. I wonder what Kuma and Rayleigh really talks about. Though I am expecting to see Kidd and Law on this chapter, I am completely satisfied with how things turn on this chapter. The plot changes and it becomes thicker. The events that will take place in One Piece are going to be beyond epic scale.
