Misc Attempt help with some pages please~

well i was hoping some experienced cleaners could help me here.

I'm attempting the impossible as many see it; I'm trying to clean some mahou sensei negima pages. Just as the reputation says, the raws are quite hard to deal with.

here is a page i'm trying to clean...

i leveled it just a tad bit from the start then used topaz denoise and got this:

i then went through and redrew some distorted parts, burned some blacks, etc.

as you can see, the image is still a bit noisy and looks a bit too gray (in my opinion at least) but that's about as how far as I can go.

any suggestions on what to do? (or what I did wrong in the previous steps)

Too sharp. It was too sharp that the grays didn't look like what they're supposed to look. What I would suggest; If you're going to use raws like that, it would be better to manually clean it instead of relying too much on topaz denoise.

You did nothing "wrong", the procedure you used gives a result like this...
It doesn't look that bad, but if you aren't satisfied then do like Doragon said and do not use denoising at all. Requires more time and effort, but a RAW like that and a speed Edited Manga just doesn't bring better results. If you did a speed Edited Manga here, i don't want to do you injustice...

I don't know what you mean by that, but I can tell you that the burning is pretty bad. You overburned most areas and some others need more burning, like the sfx on the first panel (the ku character, not the " which is overburnt too).

I'm only an ametuer myself, but I find that using a bit of brush works, with some transparency, too.

your final piece was fine for me. sure there's room to improve but to most readers i know every fine detail just doesn't matter, there's just not enough text on a page to stare for long and find every fault.
your good quality.

Well, the second attempt is very good if you have been a cleaner since not so much time...
I think you overburnt some SFX and so their lines are aliased...
About the gray, if you usually don't redo the gray areas is good...

btw your picture is so good so far you do not have to do anything else =)
but if you want to =) maybe you want something with less noise ^^ and thats what I did for you ^^
