Honestly, by now, a skilled fanfiction author would have been able to bring the boat arc to a compelling resolve if he really wanted to.

But i have to admit that i like the idea of a prince flashback.

I don't know, it looks pretty detailed. And if you Google-translate it, there's one part especially where there's a shocking flashback scene with prince Benjamin, pretty Togashi-like even if most of the "googlelation" is incomprehensible

But yeah, it's better to assume it's probably fake
A pretty detailed fake...
I know that site and they do write detailed fakes pretty often.

It's fake.

Behold, because i decided to have a fanboy outburst:

You know, when i stand in the fantasy department of a bookstore, then there is a moment when i hold up a novel which looks interesting and think to myself: Oh well! This is interesting! This might be a good and compelling read!

Then i notice that i am deluding myself because no fantasy novel will ever thrill me like the witcher saga, might it be game of thrones or any markus heitz stuff, and then i curl up to embryo position and have to be taken out by security.....metaphorically speaking.

And i have the same with HxH and other shonen.

Whenever i read another shonen save very few exceptions (basically tower of god which, as a manhwa, shakes up some of the things you usually see in shonen), there comes a moment when i think 'well, i'd rather be rereading hunter x hunter right now'.

I do not think this has anything to do with the long hiatus tho.
I have to wait pretty long for the next game of thrones novel too and, honestly, i can, even if i had at least some fun reading those.

But with HxH there are two factors making new chapters very desirable to me:

The first is a staple in shonen, namely, that you followed the characters for such a long time.
Even if you stopped reading one, you are sometimes tempted to check by to what bollocks bleach is up to these days or at least read some of the ending chapters of naruto to see how the characters ended up.
The same is true fot HxH to a degree: You followed the four mains a long time now and are invested into the world.
You also waited a long time for certain things: You waited for ging, you waited for finally seeing kurapica move against the spiders, you even waited for some of the side characters like hanzo to reappear.
Even if HxH had a quality drop, you'd probably want to at least read the hisoka fights or something.

But unlike lots of other shonen, you also have a lot of shaking up the formula.
When i read one piece, for example, i get basically the same every arc (on a high level tho).
What makes one piece enjoyable is (as in many literature) how it happens.
The jokes, the flashbacks, the fights are all on a pretty high level and the surprise comes from the absurd ways some characters manage to win their fights and from their equally absurd personas.
If we take that away however (like in many less popular shonen) there is always the same stuff happening arc per arc.
This applies to most long running shonens (may it be the train arc --> fight arc formula or anything similar) and most of those are not as enjoyable as one piece and fill themselves up with plotholes really quickly.
Mostly, the strongest arcs of most shonen happen in the early years of it.

I do not think naruto ever got as good as in the early stages in the first mission team 7 had. At least i know it is the reason i started reading it and the lack of arcs like that made me stop reading it.

I think many people started fanboying one piece due to the alabaster arc and it is still considered (together with enies lobby, admittedly) as one of the best.

And i think i do not have to tell anyone that early bleach is considered MUCH better than today's bleach.

Also, tower of god definitely had the people most invested into it in the early testing arcs compared to now.

There is a thing in a manga in general (and mos definitely in a shonen) in the early stages of it which makes you want to read it because something about the premise thrills you, and this is either done to death OR dropped completely out along the way.
For example, a lot of people stopped liking tower of god that much because the testing set up and the intrigue between the contestants was somehow toned down.
There are less deaths even tho they are at a higher stage of the tower and the testing itself is there but mostly a side aspect while an overaching story takes more spotlight.
People who got hooked on another premise have to deal with that in order to still enjoy it.

On the other hand, mangas like one piece follow their premise very rigourusly.
MAny people do like that, however, i personally got annoyed by that at some point and stopped reading, and there are some other shonen (and seinen) examples which did not change at all either and thus got predictable and bland to some.

The thing with HxH is that i feel like reading a new manga every arc because the premise changes but that new premise is a) embedded in a world i already know well and makes sense within it and b) is compelling enough to me that i would pick up a manga on that premise too.

For example, the yorknew arc, the greed island arc and the election arc could all come out of three very different mangas , speaking about tone and setting, but connecting them in an overaching plot and embedding them into the strong groundwork of nen battles and character relationships we had already make you accept it as part of the whole story without coming off unnatural.

Thus, starting the DC like that, with all the characters we like or want to know more about set up to a complex plot which again feels unlike anything we saw in HxH already is very thrilling, and waiting for it is like waiting forever for a new manga you just picked up and are very passionate about because it feels fresh.

The wait wouldnt be half as bad if the next arc was just going to be 'oh well gon fights in heaven arena again to finally face off hisoka (lets assume he got his nen back' because with that i'd totally know what to exspect, at least roughly and had already seen some of it.

For me what characterizes HxH and turns it different from other shonen is:
- pretty detailed narrative
- slow motion pace
- no "monsters of the week"
- no fillers (and here I include fights lasting too much time)

I dont think Naruto's scenario/theme has less potential than HxH's. Imho if Naruto's main plot was written like HxH it would be as enjoyable.

ToG imo started with the 4 aspects I mentioned above, but after first arc, it had to increase the pace. With that we gain in plot-advancing but lose in amount of detailed data about ToG world and characters.

Guys.... This is all his strats.

Why release HxH consistently... when he can starve us, and then sell Gon cosplay boots for an arm and your first born child to go with the next arc box set?

Again, i don't think we'll see much. I mean he jokingly said something about wanting to go pro in some video game or another... and before people kill me... i know it was probably a joke on his end and he obviously isn't quiting life to play a video game all day long, but that says alot about his personality and his desire to immediately finish it. He knows his fans would love him to finish it, and it's not like he wants to piss people off... but Togashi is Ging, he's gonna do his own thing until a Gon tracks him down and climbs a giant tree with him to have a heart to heart....

That metaphor fell apart but you know what i was doing.

tfw togashi left his wife and child to pursue his career in professional video gaming and now his son has to climb a tree to convince him he has to stop playing games and continue drawing the comic that's based on his life.

the question arises then, where does gon find ging first? inside or outside the manga? :3c

*these train trips are really long smh*

Well, it WOULD be awesome if togashi had finished like 100 HxH chapters already and he will always dish out some of them when the fans fullfill certain conditions.

If i was an acclaimed author, i think i would do it.

Like, with those crazy browser games in which you have to find answers for VERY strange and specific riddles for which you need specific knowledge on some scientific fields and cannot just wiki it.

Not sure what you mean by browser games? Like the RPs? Or the Number page RPGs?

Togashi would be like another Kojima if that was the case.

Have you played Metal gear? The amount of dumb easter eggs is crazy. There is even talk that the lastest one has a few cut scenes that only unlock when EVERYONE that owns the game does a specific action, obviously it would probably never be played, but some smarties broke into the game and found it lol.

If he is gonna Global aggro us, i hope it's something ez like everyone watch HxH 3 times. Because if he asks us to exterminate Meruem, I'm just going to have to learn to live without Hxh.

There is a form of quiz game which was usually on internet pages (but now is also offered as smartphone 'game') in which the questions gave you very little hint about what the answer is and for example finding the answer demanded looking into the sourcecode of the page to find more clues.

Or it needed you to have very specific knowledge in mathematics.

For example, it would give you 2 numbers and give you the hint 'the answer is a given'.
You then needed to perform a 'given rotation' which is a technique from numerics (math) to find a matrix with certain properties which performs on the vector created with the two numbers given you.
Noone without specific knowledge in math could even have the idea to try that.

Those games would , in my opinion, line neatly with the idea of hunter x hunter because there are quickly webboards popping up arround quizzes like that with people working together to still finish it no matter how hard it is.

When did he say that?

I said it already but if he wanted to finish it, he'd have done it already. After what happened to YYH(he rushed the end for this very reason), he prefers to do everything at his own pace(must be a Manipulator :teehee).

He wrote in Jump(when 341-349 were published) that he was accompanying one of his children everyday so...

Honestly, it could also be a writer's block.
It must be really hard to write the DC arc with all those convulted factions and backround informations.

I think that Togashi is a write who is very careful to not write himself into a corner.

So far, in every arc, we had some treads to the next arc.
We never had an arc standing completely alone and being finished and then a situation which goes along the 'A NEW EVIL ARISES' lines.

Hunter exam went neatly into the zoldyek arc.
The heaven's arena arc was caused due to treads already laid in the hunter exam too (gon wanting to fight hisoka)
The yorkshin arc was also caused by kurapica's revenge thoughts already stated in the hunter exam arc.
The whole yorkshin arc was also a way for Gon and Killuah to get their hands onto greed island,
Greed Island transitioned without any pause into the chimera ants arc, and this one's events caused the election arc.
The DC arc was also caused by events in the chimera arc.

I am not sure how far Togashi plans his story ahead, but i am pretty sure usually he has the next two arcs in mind when he writes on one so he can lay out the strings leading to the upcoming events without plotholes or writing himself into a corner.

And honestly, doing that in the DC arc must be pretty crazy.

Unlikely since he already started writing a part, I'd guess that he at least has the next part planned out. I honestly don't think he is doing anything HxH related at the moment

An author can't write a story if he has not planned things ahead but I would not say that the transitions were perfect, the transition to the DC arc was though).

Most of the arcs started because of Gon's desires , Zoldyck arc started because he wanted to visit Killua, same for the Heavens Arena arc, because he wanted to punch Hisoka, York Shin is the arc where Kurapika has been more prominent but the other mains got involved to that extent because of Gon, same for GI etc. The themes are also very different from arcs to arcs, to the point some readers even forgot that it is mainly an adventure manga.

Well, there are enough Mangaka who planned out the first two arcs of their manga and then just go along not really knowing where to go :p
Oku Hiroya is guilty here, anyone remembers the vampires?^^

I thought the very different settings suited the adventure theme very well because it makes sense that an adventure takes place on many very different locations and with many different objectives.
HxH at its core is about desires, too, i think.

Ging left Gon due to his desires and Gon thinks if Ging left him that world must be worth it and the adventures awaiting him.

Yeah, that's true. All the characters move because they desire something, and don't mind how they obtain it

One of the hunter commandments is 'a hunter must always hunt something' after all :p
