Re: Real men are like wolves, with you for life or alone for it - Part 6

I can't imagine anyone thinking AnoHana overrated unless they were deliberately trying to be contrary. The characters are magnificent, memorable, flawed, but still all likable. Menma may be one of the all time great anime characters. The pacing is perfect, but still allowing the mystery time to develop, not giving away all it's secrets even after ten episodes. The main themes of the story - loss, guilt, forgiveness, moving on without forgetting - are handled in a mature, intelligent, emotionally real manner. What could have been emotional manipulation is handled in honestly. Overall it reminds me of the first volume of Emanon.
I agree with you, that's why I love the show. Everything felt so natural and that's probably why I was so emotionally touched. I rewatched AnoHana a few month ago and I loved it + cried even more. I think I never cried more in any other anime I've watched and for that alone it becomes a masterpiece to me.

The only one I clearly remember who said it's overrated is digitaldude. Now he may not always be serious but I felt like he was there. I never asked for the specific reasons but I believe there won't ever be a show that everyone likes.

I've read the first two volumes of the manga. Good, but I'm not sure I want to watch the anime too. Five ongoing series is enough for me. I may reassess when SAO and Chu2byo end, depending on what debuts in January.
Well I can't judge the manga but the anime definitely is one of the series I'm most looking forward to every week. It felt so refreshing and different compared to your usual shoujo. I don't know if you give a fuck about it but the series is rated pretty highly on MAL too, which means that a lot of people probably share my opinion.

I can see where you're coming from though, I watch a lot of this seasons series and I'm barely able to follow all of them.

The only thing I really loved about SAO was its concept. The side stories like mentioned ruined the pacing, and overall the SAO universe was poorly explored. There really is no point to introducing 100 levels when you're only going to give major focus to two or three. I can only imagine what a long story about for example 20 levels could have been (amazing). The ALO arc has just been bad. I can't stand the awkward situation with Kirito's sister and generic "princess needing rescue from creepy/bad man" story. Huge let down after the interesting concept SAO brought with it. I haven't even seen this week's episode and not sure I will either. This is getting quite usual for me lately. Last time I watched a hyped series and went through the same process was with Guilty Crown, which I dropped around episode 19 too.
Kait already said everything important so I'm just gonna say check out "Tower of God". That's where it's done right, at least until now. Awesome series that deserves more fans.

I really need to watch some new anime soon. Apart from SAO I haven't picked up anything yet this season. I downloaded Sakamichi no Apollon, but since I'm rewatching the godly Death Note I'll have to finish that up before I pick up anything new.
I'm going to repeat myself but if anything you should watch Steins;Gate :p I haven't met anyone who didn't enjoy it and our bro Shin was fangasming over it after I recommended the series to him so yeah... give it a try :mono

I'm just going to assume he's trolling, otherwise I would be very disappointed in him.

That is part of what got me in trouble. I'd start a lot of series, but not finish half of them. I've been better this season, for whatever reason.

I never understood why so little of Aincrad's 100 levels were explored. That is my main problem with SAO, an issue that I imagine can be traced back to the book. From what I understand only the Sword Art Online game was cleared at the end of the first novel in a ten volume series. I'm not sure why such a big world was created but left virtually unexplored. It also would have been nice if the psychology of being trapped in a life or death game was better developed, even if just a little. All of the characters and even the extras seem so well adjusted. I know the novels are meant for teens, but it would have been nice if the dark side of the situation was at least acknowledged.

Alfheim is also a retread of the first arc. It does not really add anything. It's little more than Aincrad with lower stakes.
SAO is pretty much the definition of "killed off prematurely". Such potential, but such a huge waste. It would be like only visiting two islands in One Piece and skipping to the end. A longer, but more focused arc would have been a much better idea than rushing through SAO and dive into degraded and less intense versions of a similar universe.

I'm going to repeat myself but if anything you should watch Steins;Gate :p I haven't met anyone who didn't enjoy it and our bro Shin was fangasming over it after I recommended the series to him so yeah... give it a try :mono
I actually checked out Steins;Gate when it was running, but dropped it after three or so episodes. It was pretty slow moving, but I did intend to pick it up again at that time. Maybe I should give it another shot.

Re: Real men are like wolves, with you for life or alone for it - Part 6

There's one scene in the first episode that seems like BL, but it isn't at all IMO. It's there for comical reasons. There is absolutely no overt BL in the anime, but fujoshi will ship anything and everything.

And to be honest, even if there was some of that I wouldn't care. It doesn't bother me really.
I don't mind comical reasons too, though. I was thinking that it was a pure Shounen-Ai, but since some of you guys seem really like it I will definitely give it a second try.

I thought Magica got better after episode 5. The first few episodes were good, but still only world building. I thought the series really took off during Sayaka's storyline. I loved how the series explored the psychology of having super powers, the consequences of fighting, that evil and good ultimately have the same source. The series almost seemed like a commentary on supernatural action manga and anime. It was amazing how they turned a genre that generally relies on tropes into something so original and tragic.
Sayaka is possibly the main reason why Madoka is great. I remember during the later half of the story I felt that Madoka Magica is mainly about Sayaka rather than Madoka or Homura. I somehow think that there are some things left unexplained, but since Madoka only has 12 episodes, I guess it's reasonable. I'm looking forward for the third movie too. It's too bad that they didn't release the 1st and 2nd Madoka movies in Asia besides Japan.

I actually checked out Steins;Gate when it was running, but dropped it after three or so episodes. It was pretty slow moving, but I did intend to pick it up again at that time. Maybe I should give it another shot.
You should give it another chance, I can understand why you dropped it after the first three episodes, but it's really the anime where you need more patience to wait where the plot finally kicks in.

Considering how how the show ended, it made sense that Madoka ceded the spotlight a third of the way through. Sayaka dominated the middle third of the series, with Homura dominating the last few episodes. Homura's flashback was my favorite part of the series. Sometime between now and December there will be screenings of the first two movies in Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea, and Singapore. Outside of Asia there will be screenings in France, Italy, and San Marino. US screenings are already underway. Hopefully either wider theatrical release will follow, or at least licensed BD/DVD. The third movie is the one I really care about.

@Thorn - They're primal, so I guess they have the sex drive of any wild beast.
Is this an excuse to your libidinal behavior?

Don't forget to give your thoughts on PP thread thorn :nod

I've definitely cried big manly tears while watching AnoHana. The characters are so easy to sympathize with, and Menma is so lovable, that it is hard not to. The last anime I was this emotionally invested in was Clannad (and Clannad: After Story, of course).
I think I've watched the first two episodes of Clannad but I didn't really like the style and I couldn't find anything particularly interesting, thus I stopped watching. I heard that it's praised a lot but the art really put me off. I'm probably missing something great but I always had problems with starting series which art I dislike/d.

I was going to rec Orange to you, then I noticed that you already read it :oh

That's funny, I started reading it yesterday because I was talking about shoujo's with Doku and I remembered you and vio really liking it so I gave it a try and totally loved it. You can read my opinion in the orange thread, I've yet to post my thoughts on the last chapter though. Don't be surprised by my unreasonable fangasm.

Usually they do, I agree. That's why I'm usually checking their site when I'm about to start a finished series. They tend to overrate series too sometimes (like SAO) but it gives you a pretty good hunch if a series is good or bad. I just checked MAL's rating on Orange and I have to say I approve, it has a pretty high ranking.

Glad you see you will give Tonari a try, tell me what you think when you start watching~

That is part of what got me in trouble. I'd start a lot of series, but not finish half of them. I've been better this season, for whatever reason.
I really try my best not to do that, though I believe watching less series would be less stressfull. I already dropped two average/bad series (Zetsuen no Tempest, Code:Breaker) but I have to say that I pretty much enjoy the rest I'm watching, besides "K" which I consider to drop too. I didn't because I still have a bit of hope left.
The biggest surprise together with Tonari probably was Jojo, surprisingly entertaining and over the top. I even consider to give the manga a try, even though I would need to read a damn lot.

I actually checked out Steins;Gate when it was running, but dropped it after three or so episodes. It was pretty slow moving, but I did intend to pick it up again at that time. Maybe I should give it another shot.
Like Doku said, it starts slow. Back then I actually dropped it too after three episodes, when I tried it again after a few month I totally loved it. I can guarantee you will too.

By the way, I recommend Guilty Crown for any one intending to start a new series.
:rofl

It's fucking amazing. I've been listening to the continuous mix on soundcloud on repeat for some days now. I think a lot of that has to do with how great the original album is, but it's great
Yea, I agree. It's a brilliant mixtape but would have been nothing if not for the original. What are you favourite song(s)?

I've been doing the continuous mix on soundcloud so it all sort of blends together obviously. I'll try to pick some out, but the transition of the In For The Kill remix into the Growing Pains Remix is probably my favorite.

Hahah same. Then from Growing Pains into Tigerlilly, those three songs are the peak. :love

I have to admit that "Sansa" looks better overtime. During season 1 of GoT, I just couldn't define her as beautiful as said in the books because her face just looked so stupid. Well her behavior as a character sure contributed to that feeling but still.

She was really weird!! And she's still weird, but her features are pretty and she has an awesome body.
I don't think that Brienne looks bad, Prince xD
