at first, i wasn't really interested to read this topic but a fateful meeting suggested i do.

The Kanji "Nakama" was casually replaced by the word "friend". Kanji words often hold much meaning than english words. typesetting forms part of HQ too. since i know Chikuso dropped naruto, you probably just made a bad choice for the example.

Nakama isnt as important in naruto as in one piece i believe because it has no particular meaning other than friend, unlike in one piece.

The translation quality is definitely part of the Edited Manga. I mean if there are things like "wtf, narto. You are teh 1337" then the Edited Manga isnt in high quality.

The cleaning could be great but if the translation is unreadable then it isnt High Quality. It is as simple as that. Translation is part of the Edited Mangas and this is called "how to rate Edited Mangas" not how to rate cleaning or how to rate typesetting.

in reply to above: well not groups have the the resources of Japflap or shannaro. they are pretty big teams. lots of cleaners, maybe their own translators and raw providers.

although IMO HQ is a matter of skill rather than numbers.

Well let's take for example shanaro's cleaning tests , what do you think they are for ?
Only cleaners with skill may join shannaro and/or japflap....i got rejected with shanaro beacause i quote "you need to redraw the border of the pages*.
Well i got kinda mad and i'm not spending 2-3 hours for something that people don't care.

Let's get off the topic of the "friend" thing. I mean, yes I'd have to agree with Rampage and Neo there that such things should be left alone as to maintain the originality of the manga. I would rate a Edited Manga more for how well people stay faithful to the original art in the cleaning of it despite changing all the Japanese text to English, but it's out there now, and it'll be heard, so let's just move on

Well lately its starts to annoy me that everyone calls his releases HQ. Its nothing against the people but too many people overrate their work. I usually see Naruto HQs dropping already a few hours after the LQ raw is out and I've not seen any real HQ in such a time yet. If I download a HQ then for the sake of seeing really nice quality...but lately like 75% of the people who cleaned the raws already a bit call their releases already HQ even its just medicore/good MQ.

Hmm, we could start a rating site/thread ourselves? Where we review all the cleans and Edited Mangas and give our own independant rating? I totally agree with you, but then again, i'm anal about this sort of thing ^^

To do this objectively i'll use a scoretable that is will use to rate the Edited Manga.

I've made up the following points to check:

Quality: [total points: 80]
- Blacks: not edited / basic leveling done / near perfect / perfect [0/5/15/20]
- Whites: not edited / basic leveling done / near perfect / perfect [0/5/15/20]
- Greys: not edited / near perfect / perfect [0/15/20]
- Detail: very little detail lost / detail lost / detail maintained [0/-20/20]

Type setting: [total points: 40]
- Font readability: bad / good [0/10]
- Font weight: bad / good (if different weight (bold / not bold) is used correctly) [0/5]
- Placing in speech balloons: sometimes outside border / inside borders, but not always diamond shape / perfect [0/15/20]
- SFX: none / done [0/5]

Layout: [total points: 20]
- Panel borders: not reframed / reframed poorly / reframed [0/-10/10]
- Page size: not cropped / cropped [0/10]

The outcome would be a percentage (total score / 140 * 100), and you could also show the individual points... so the creator of the Edited Manga will know what he needs to improve on, to get a better score.

Let me know what you think and if i've weighed the different parts good or bad. Maybe i missed some stuff.. plz, tell me you opinion ^^

Nah... you'll score high in the typesetting part ^^ Besides, your quality is always pretty decent, more MQ then LQ imo!

Also, I just want to point out that not all groups have their pages as (754*1100). Shannaro uses (820 * 1200) and maybe also some other groups.

i like the larger sized scans. I mean 1100 is a little to small sometimes to appreciate the details. 1200 is a better size, imo

Nice speed scan, whites are mostly white... blacks/grays are leveled but not painted.

Good typesetting, a shame not all SFX was translated.

Borders aren't reframed.

Ok, so this is it ^^ the first review ever, from Komikku.net (my to build manga site pre-alpha stage). Basicly this is how it would work, i review all the Edited Mangas and post them so visitors will have an indipendant quality rating. I took des' MQ as example, because i know i wouldn't get flamed by the cleaner/type setter, but when i finish the admin for adding reviews i'll start reviewing all the scans.

Yea, yea bla, bla... but why are you posting this? Let me know plz what you think of the idea and if you think it could use some changes and such..

Hey, that Edited Manga review thing is REALLY darn cool~

Hope you get some more people and momentum going. The problem is going to be that when you are dealing with the other 90% of the Edited Mangas out there that are done using Tanko scans, then there's pretty much no cleaning to be done and all the points are going into Typesetting. How are you going to handle that?

One thing i'm thinking of adding is extra points for a bonus folder and colored covers... but right now i'm putting priority on building the admin ^^. The idea is mostly to rate Edited Mangas from lq/hq raws. I'm guessing that its gonna be usefull for untill the first HQ comes out and then pretty much every HQ will score above 90% so there will be very little difference. So for example on Naruto it will be pretty hard to rate Shannaro vs. Japflap vs. Inane vs. NBST... they will prob. all score around the same with some minor differences.

But the most important thing is to be able to tell the difference between the speedscans that come out, because those vary a lot in quality. Besides that we'll be keeping a record of each cleaner, so when we have some more date, we could show statistics about that cleaner or cleaner group.

Also the site will have info about various manga's aswell (not just Naruto) and yea... we need alot of ppl to add all the info, so i'm building it so that alot of ppl can add data to the site, which means the building is very slow, but in the end i'm hoping it will pay off because more ppl will be able to add more data.
