In fact, Gon is 11 years old during the Hunter exam. His 12th Birthday probably was during the training in Heavens Arena. And his 13th birthday during Chimera Ant arc.

I just prefer the 2011 series character design way more, as they seem to reference the later manga drawing style and proportion more (Gon and Killua in G.I. and on especially).

What I didn't like about the 1999 series's design was the way the eyes are drawn - first it looked very dated (while Togashi's manga won't have that dated feeling) and always gave Gon this very 'genki' but kind dumb, childlike innocent feeling. The new Gon is still genki but looks more restrain and somewhat more matured, like you can see more wisdom and calm in his eyes, which is a lot closer to how Togashi drawn him. I think the old series tried way too hard to twist Gon into pure innocent, good two shoes boy. The 2011 Gon looks younger in proportion but actually comes off more alpha, and 'older' in spirit to me.

I have a question. Can anyone translate the kanji on the main page of the HxH anime site where it says 3/11? I would assume it's talking about a new opening or ending theme since it is around that time but since I haven't seen any articles on it I'm not sure.
It just says that the Zoldyick arc will begin on March 11th. Nothing about a new OP or ED or anything like that. I assume we should hear something in this week's Jump if it's gonna happen.

Nah man, you had to be 12 to even qualify for the exam. :mono

Gore and blood aren't the main things that make Hunter x Hunter a more adult Shonen series--it's the writing and the concepts in it. Thus far, the 2011 series has done a great job at misleading you to believe that the series is "childish." But if you pay attention, there are hints towards something darker.

hmm, i think it well be imperfect, because this arc is more "seinen" .

I also thought that to be the case, but I think that was anime filler, as Tonpa said he participated in the exam ever since he was 10.

Well, the series at large becomes more seinen starting from the Yorknew City arc. It transitions from "traditional Shonen manga" to "adventure comic that entirely subverts Shonen tradition/tropes by taking this seemingly-fantastic/childish world seriously."

The thing is that Togashi is very misleading about the true nature of the series during the Hunter Exam arc. He foreshadows this numerous times, but one only notices when paying attention to the details.

I say the series is ALREADY dark.

How many candidates have DIED that they reported as "oh they just didn't pass the exam".
Hisoka murders candidates and even an examiner and STILL gets to continue the hunter exam.
Gon considered using Kurapica and Leorio as bait for Hisoka to get Hisoka's badge (of course he reconsidered when he thought about it further)
Who knows how many people Killua has killed for an "assignment"?
Tompa only takes the exam to make rookies fail...and that often ends with their death
Illumi trying to mind control Killua
Killua is basically not allowed to have friends
Gon was abandoned by his father who rather go on adventures and hunt then be with his own son
Leorio's past and not being able to help his friend due to an illness that he couldn't afford medicine for
Leorio's commentary that the world runs on money
the Kurta Tribe massacre
the fact that Kurapica is willing to become something he hates to avenge the Kurta Tribe
that they sell eyeballs on the black market
Hanzo torturing Gon to give up on the final exam

I say it's pretty dark already. Is it the darkest HxH will get? Hardly. But it's not nearly as cheery as people make it out to be.

Also remember that Hunter x Hunter is not a crapsack world but a crapsaccharine world. Its SUPPOSED to look nice and pretty on the outside

and DOWN RIGHT ROTTEN EVIL HARDCORE MISERY ON THE INSIDE

Well, the manga version I have, says he is "almost 12 years old" at the begining, so he isn't 12 yet.
But it may be a mistranslation. If that's the case, Gon is 14 years old right now.

Yeah, from the begining it's dark, but not darker that any good shonen manga. Not darker that Naruto, for example.

Dark in terms of violence and the nature of their world, yes. This is true. The violence in the series can occasionally resemble something you might find published in manga series aimed towards adults, but it's rarely ever too graphic for Jump. Dragon Ball had similar levels of violence in its manga and so does Naruto.

Togashi wants his readers to think of it as a childish shonen work at first. This is most apparent through the artwork outside of the chapters, such as the first several volume covers and chapter covers. Examples:

(Hint: This third image is actually really important to understanding another thing that Togashi tries to do with Gon's character. Try to figure it out; although I'll make a topic about it eventually.)

Looking at those, one wouldn't expect Hunter x Hunter to be the kind of series it becomes. My last statement was I talking mostly about the concepts in the series being adult. I agree that HxH at this point is already very dark for a Shonen series, but at this point it's similar to Naruto. The themes and writing tread towards seinen after the series takes a tonal shift following the end of the first major arc.

The characters initially seem two-dimensional or shallow; based upon familiar archetypes that are present in most shonen series. The stalwart, determined underdog of a protagonist. His dark and troubled anti-hero best friend. The noble sole survivor of a warrior clan. The shirker of a big-brother to the group whom typically mostly exists for comic relief. And a creepy, deadly villain.

However, as the writing progresses, Togashi starts to develop his story and characters in unconventional ways. The 2011 series has already started to illustrate some of the ways in which Gon, Killua, Leorio, and Hisoka might be thoroughly deeper than those surface descriptions.

Gon's differences aren't entirely apparent yet, and so I won't go into those. But I will mention that his choice to use Leorio and Kurapika as bait was something that Togashi wanted perceptive readers to pick up on, whereas people reading fast won't take it into consideration. Thus far, there have been seven episodes in the 2011 series that have foreshadowed immense things regarding Gon's character--but they're very subtle.

Leorio has already proved that despite his missteps, he is actually resourceful, kind, and determined. He might even be the first person in the series to show depth that readers might not have initially perceived. Originally seen as a selfish, useless man whom only cares about money. But his true goal is to become a licensed Hunter in order to gain the money required of becoming philanthropic doctor.

Hisoka is strange because viewers at this point still don't fully understand his motives/personality. What does he really want?

Killua's is a bit more complex, yet it's only starting in motion. I don't think it would be a stretch to say that he's probably been the most impressive character in the Hunter Exam, in terms of things that we've seen on-screen. Viewers are supposed to see him as cool and dangerous/mysterious, but also a potential threat due to the extreme acts of violence we've seen him commit.

In this episode, viewers are given agency to his true desires for the first time. Killua lies a lot during the Hunter Exam. He isn't typically an open book; Killua hides his actual wants through his charm (as stated in episode 7).

Before episode 20, I don't think it would be a stretch to assume that most viewers thought of Killua to mostly be a cool, strong assassin. But against Illumi, he states that he "[wants] to be friends with Gon. [Killua is] fed up with killing. [He] wants to live a normal life."

Isn't that interesting? Killua, initially conceived to be the dark anti-hero best friend (which I should mention is a very common and popular personality-type in anime/manga), wishes to renounce that very same identity. He's almost directly stating to readers that he doesn't want to follow their expectations. Despite the fact that readers like Killua for his darker traits (and young boys might even want to be him because of that coolness), he would rather live a life akin to the reader's own.

Well, the manga version I have, says he is "almost 12 years old" at the begining, so he isn't 12 yet.
But it may be a mistranslation. If that's the case, Gon is 14 years old right now.
No, it's not a mistranslation. Gon takes the Hunter Exam at the age of eleven--slightly younger than his father when he did. But this is only in the manga--the two anime series change his age to twelve.

In my opinion Hunter x Hunter is the kind of series that appeals both to younger and older audiences. You've got the basic shounen stuff (albeit with quite a few subversions), the sense of wonder and adventure, and cool characters that appeal to the younger crowd. Yet at the same time you've got underlying material and subtext that makes the series pretty interesting for older readers/watchers. I got into the series when I was 13/14 (right after Yu Yu Hakusho) and found it an awesome show. Then when I began reading the manga starting at the point where the anime stopped (end of G.I. arc) I started to realize how dark and adult the series could be, even more so when I went back to the beginning of the manga. In my case it made appreciate the series all the more.

If the staff cares about their viewers then at that stage they'll move the show to an evening timeslot
