Anime Hunter X Hunter Anime- Fall 2011

I don't speak Japanese but I'm pretty sure HxH is a LOT more popular in Japan than
it is in America. Why? Because in America it's not very popular at all. Well ok maybe
it's a little bit popular. But really it seems like most mainstream anime fans in America
would be like

"Hunter X Hunter? What's that?"


In America from what I seen...

Naruto is the main stream series. Practically everyone watches it.
Including me. No doubt there are "better" series. But I spent
too much time on the series to stop. And I do enjoy it.


Yu-Gi-Oh is the kids series. It's like power rangers. All the kids watch it but nobody wants to admit it. I don't really watch it but I appreciate a lot of it. I do think that Seito Kaiba
is one of the greatest anime villains in existence.

Pokemon is the old school kids series. Yes it's still quite popular but it also seems
to have a bit of an older fan base than Yu-gi-oh. I like the red and blue games.
The anime is meh. The manga is better. Though I think a very good children's story
exists in the red and blue games.

Bleach was like the "cool" version of Naruto. Not it's just a punching bag.
Except for a few people like me who still enjoy it. Probably because I
didn't watch it to just join the band wagon and was actually expecting to hate
the series. But I actually legimately like it. Virtually all of it.

Death Note is the anti-conformist series. It's for the folks who wanted something
besides the standard shonen fighter. I read it and liked it. I even once thought
it was brilliant. But it's actually pretty standard fare once you compare it to other
series.

DBZ is of course the classic series. It is the Mario. Everyone knows it.

YuYu Hakusho is the under dog series/old school series. It's like the Sega Genesis.
Every other kid had one. For everyone else it was Nintendo. I have yet to watch it all.

One Piece is the "martyr" series. It's the series that it's fans insist would be more popular
than Naruto if it weren't for this or that. It's a good series but also highly overrated
by many of it's fans. I do like One Piece though. But I don't think it is as brilliant
as people say it is.

Hunter x Hunter is the secret series. It is anime's best kept secret.
It's difficult to find people who like it. It doesn't even have it's own forum.
But once you get into it. It's like WHAT HAVE I BEEN DOING ALL MY LIFE?
Then it's like HIATUS? NOooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

MD Geist is the Haters Gonna Hate series. It's incredibly awesome but because
it's not full of moe crap or sparkly eyes or what not it's get a lot of criticism.
But in truth it's actually one of the most entertaining anime of all time.
Ok, is it incredibly simple (at least on the surface) sure. But who cares?
I sure don't. Watching M.D Geist wreck carnage is just brilliant.

Golgo 13 is the rite of passage series. It will put hair on your chest if you're a man
and it will impregnate you if you are a woman. Sometimes both.

I love that you compared Yu Yu to the Sega Genesis. Badass. As a both a Togashi fan and a Sega kid, this hits me where I live.

I'd say most of your comparisons are fairly accurate Mrsticky. XD
Also I mostly meant to compare HxH to Kenshin in the way its remembered by older fans. Kenshin is not on par with Dragonball, perhaps not even Slam Dunk of 90s fame but it has a solid fan base and is probably one of the 10 most well loved shonen anime. Where as I wasn't sure if Japan revered HxH in the same light after 13 years or so (both were highly rated in polls I saw from Japan and by the same director) but HxH seemed to drop off the map news wise after the Hiatuses started happening in the mid 2000's. It was a huge shock to me to see a total reboot but more important a shock to see it be SO DARN GOOD! The animation and production value just screams "we care about this series and we want to do it right" While I'm still not personally in love with the music direction (tracks are good direction to me is spotty compared to the "better" eps of 1999) But so far in every other category its 4-5 stars for a tv anime. I can't think of any other shonen on tv that looks this darn good, can anyone else? I can't wait for whoever licenses new Hunter to take my money please.

Hearing that its more popular then Toriko and Gintama is honestly surprising to me FutureFrog, but in a great way. Both those series seem to get tons of movie and push from Shueisha to do perform well, especially Toriko (which I don't think is all that great, tell me if I'm wrong). Toriko has been snuggled next to OnePiece for a while now and it seems like they really want that to be their next Big 3. I just think HxH story wise has always had the potential if it was given the right opportunity.

I for one hope Togashi is a clever and wise man about this and finishes the series well and gives readers hope for the future. So long as the manga progression doesn't hinder the new anime I'll be happy. I also can't wait to hear news of a dub, Funimation giving HxH the Bacanno level dub treatment/and or a tv broadcast at a decent channel timeslot I think would solidify its place among fans in the US.

I'm getting fed up seeing this "reason" from fans so if you don't mind, I would like you to list these illogical and contradictory things you speak of.

Also, have you really look at Gon's house in the manga and the 2011 version? Is that a "poor" boy's kind of house?




The problem is, Gon is NOT innocent. Naive at best and a little stupid at worst but he is not an innocent kid. He will not outright lie if possible but he will if it's necessary... just that he's not very good at lying so he opt to, shall we say, leave out details to get around that (look at the 4th exam when he took Ponzu's tag).

Have you watched the old series and then just read the manga where it left off? Because the 1999 series Gon is very different from the manga Gon.

Yeah sorry about that. Overall point of my post was that...HxH 1999 doesn't seem to be all that popular in America but I have the 2011 series can have a sizable audience here in the states.

How would anyone feel about Ocean Productions dubbing HxH?

They had Blue Water Studios (which is owned by Ocean Productions)
Basically Ocean does the high profile stuff. While Blue Water does stuff not on the radar.

Ocean did the dub for Death Note which I thought was quite good. Also they did the Ocean dub of Dragon Ball Z.

I think Ocean has good dubs and bad dubs. So I guess it really depends on how much effort or who is doing the dialogue adaptation. I like half the Gundam dubs but i dislike the other half. Basically I find them sort of inconsistent. Funimation was the company I'd love to dub it since they don't have any really bad dubs (outside of their very early work (namely dbz))

Ocean ain't bad, but I would still prefer Funimation to dub Hunter x Hunter. Their dubs are great like for example Darker than Black, Baccano!, Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Summer Wars, Rebuild of Evangelion, and the list goes on lol.

One thing I'm liking about the Phantom Troupe's new look is that they are looking more theatrical...as a troupe should.

It is interesting how people keep mentioning Bonolenov. Its interesting how in the first chapter he had more of a bondage vibe which 1999 based their design off where it seems like towards the end of Yorknew and most notably in NGL he appears more as a Mummy. I barely remembered his character exists till NGL, so I'm glad they went with his more iconic look from the recent chapters. Same with Phinx. I wonder if we'll get any teasers in the new adaptation? Like during the scene were the 10 spiders attack the mafia on September 3rd, Bonolenov, Pakunoda, and Koltopi are the ones we don't see do anything. I'd be awesome if we could see them causing bits of mayhem alongside the others.

Also I do like your idea sticky of thinking of them as an actual performing troupe.

I think the reason you don't see Bonolenov fight then is because Togashi was likely saving his ability for the Chimera Ant Arc.

As for Pakunoda and Coltopi...I don't think they are combat fighters that much.

I've read one of the most ignorant comments made by a hater of the new series. He/she said that Kastro won't show up in the new series. Why? Because he didn't show up in the intro.

Like, seriously?! Just because he didn't show up in the opening they assume he won't appear in the actual series?!! Gee! I guess that means Gido, Riehlvelt and Sadaso won't show up because they weren't in the new opening as well!

Basically for both Kastro and Examiner...
