Some difference between Togashi and Kubo is that Togashi only draws as much as he needs while Kubo only draws as much as he wants.
Togashi I think is more focused on the story than he is on the art. That's not to say Togashi isn't focused on the art. But story comes first.
Kubo is more focused on the art...specifically character art. Kubo focuses a lot on the emotions of characters and tries to provide a cinematic
feel to his manga. While I think Hunter x Hunter tries to stay low key most of the time. Bleach tries to make everything dramatic.
Togashi has a lot in so few chapters because he has a LOT he wants to tell. Kubo doesn't have much to tell. But he has much to show.
While I think HxH has better developed characters. Bleach I think seems to be more character driven. Almost all of Part 1 of Bleach
happens because of Aizen being who he is. However I think the Fullbring Arc really shows Kubo's storytelling in action. Kubo seems
to not be so concerned with the details of the plot (something that disappoints me) and is more about the "emotions" of the battle.

Well for togashi he does most of the crap himself. So it's explainable why Bleach could have more focus on the art than the story... lol

Please do not misunderstand me.

I love the artwork in HxH. Actually I prefer it over Bleach. It's got more variety to it.
I do NOT at all intend to say that Bleach has "better" artwork.
That's not what I'm trying to say.


What I'm saying is that Kubo is mostly concerned with the look of the comic.
That's not to say Kubo doesn't care about the story at all but Kubo wants
you to look at a page of his manga and get an instant reaction.

Geh, it's hard to explain what I mean.

But how about something like this...

HxH could be made into a novel. It is more narrative than it is visual.

Bleach can't. It relies too much on the visual rather than the narrative.

At the same time Bleach would probably make for a more visual stunning movie than Hunter x Hunter would.


Neither of these are BAD things mind you. And it's not a black and white
issue either. It's not like Bleach is 100% visual or HxH is 100% narrative.
It's just different methods I guess of storytelling.

I already knew what your were trying to say. I'm just saying bleach has more liberties with the art. I'm not disagreeing with you or anything I'm just shedding some light on the differences. =[]

I know Tite Kubo basically doesn't draw backgrounds but there is one interview
where he says the reason he doesn't do that is because he wants to focus
on the characters. So backgrounds aren't really important to him.

Personally ,I think that both Bleach and Hunter x Hunter have their own strength and weakness.So there really isn't any point in comparing them.

But that's more or less what I was saying.

I was comparing them but I'm not competing them.

I'm not trying to say Bleach is better or Hunter x Hunter is better.
(Though if I had pick between the two I'd pick the latter)
It's more of my own half baked analysis of what makes them as they are.

Story and character-wise, each have their strengths. I think Togashi is more balanced and versatile when it comes to this, but in some cases I find the storytelling in Bleach weak. But I get what you're saying... Kubo's more likely to stun a reader visually, but it'd make a poor novel (since I don't think Kubo's as great as a story teller as Togashi is -- but Bleach still has a set of its own interesting characters). Togashi is more likely to stun a reader through story-telling and characters, but the manga isn't as aesthetically pleasing, and thus could be written as a novel.

Trust me, if Togashi didn't have an amazing story and compelling characters, I would've dropped Hunter due to the art. Not going to lie, it got that bad in some cases. :|

I don't think the art is that bad. He puts emphasis on the parts that are needed. Since he's working be himself it's explainable. The story doesn't just progress through the narrative as much. Theres cases where his drawing fleshes out the story more often than not. I find his art amazing in most instances. His art contributes greatly to the story and he does it it fine fashion IMO.

A little over a year delay isn't too bad. I think most of their series are on a half-a-year to a year delay from the Japanese release. (Evangelion v13 will be the first to get a simultaneous print release date with Japan ).

At least 29 is just four months off, with volume 30 four months after that.

Yeah, I was reading the weekly jump scans when I read through the manga. I understand Togashi has his reasons for not drawing at the best of his abilities at the time, and I don't want to give him too much crap for it. Trust me, based on the cover art and what I've seen so far, I don't doubt Togashi's artistic abilities, and he's great at showing emotions in his characters and setting a tone based on art.

Man, Hunter x Hunter has some of the most amazing shounen cover art I've seen.

No real reason. I don't see much of the problem as long as we're not at each other's throats about it.
I know this is HxH thread. But I think you can discuss other manga like Bleach and see what makes
HxH different from it. What makes them similar. How other people think about each one. Stuff like that.

Though the main topic is of course still HxH.

Speaking of which did anyone take a look at the 99 cel gallery I posted a while earlier?

I always find those interesting but yet disappointing to look at it because it's like...that's what it could have been. Sigh.
