Fun Hunter x Hunter Hangout Thread [01]

Saw some people joke that Togashi has been on hiatus for so long he forgot how the characters look like.

...except that's how the Troupe has always looked in the manga. Both anime series changed the designs to be more attractive -- plus Chrollo's design has always varied.

While I'm slightly annoyed that 337 was not redrawn... I'm now trying to think maybe there's a reason for it? Most of the chapters look pretty fantastic during his last run, extremely sharp designs and even backgrounds. While 336 was some what rough, and then the chapters with Ging and Gon aren't the best, they certainly aren't the scribbles that are 337. The chapter itself also felt extremely weird when reading it. Just out of the blue, here's Kite... at some random place... as a new person... wat.

Crazy theory time: Gon has totally lost it and has imagined a scenario where Kite has been reborn and the quality of the chapter represents Gon's unstable mind.

Am I the only one that thought Kite looked cool in 337? I liked the way he drew characters in that chapter hated drawing of backgrounds...

Though maybe we can hope for two different openings during the chimera ants incident. The second one should have Meruem's "You can smile again" instead of Gon and Co. xD

Also, the thread that originally had this pic seems to be missing. It was the one with complaints about Departure's continue as the anime OP.

I didn't want to use that image because I didn't want it to appear like a parody opening. I wanted it to look like a legit opening like the last four openings we had for 60 episodes.

You would expect Togashi to fix the art in Tanks if he takes hiatus for a long time. Okay so he's busy with his life, but what, other mangaka arent? I read some manga that are also on hiatus but it's so forgivable (eg. Berserk and Vagabond) because the art is fantastic, even on magazine releases.

eni once mentioned her distaste for Togashi and HxH in general- that if he could have at least did good art in magazine releases then it wouldn't be too much of a burden to redraw. He's making it harder on himself by turning in half-assed chapters and then having to fix them later. That's his style of procrastination maybe, but like others have mentioned, to say that he's a disgrace to other mangaka- may not be too far of a stretch. We kind of know that being a mangaka requires so much of your time and dedication, and that these people put their heart and soul into it. Then Togashi gets away with it by publishing scribbles.

Now I wonder if Bakuman's Hiramaru is based on Togashi? lol.

There's nothing half-assed about it that would make it "more work on him." All manga chapters start like this, even Inoue's Vagabond. They're drafts. However, in Togashi's case, that's all he ever turns in. He never finishes the chapters out. Whereas Inoue or Miura probably has chapters already well prepared before returning to their magazines (plus Berserk is biweekly), Togashi's most likely still running week-to-week, day-to-day on finishing his chapters. I actually know for a fact that Inoue works on chapters well ahead of their appearance in the magazine. I remember him blogging that he was beginning work on the new chapters months before it ever was in the magazine again.
