I wonder how many chapters Togashi has roughly planned or even outlined by now.
I assume he is very far in the story already, with drawings tho, it is a different question.

If he takes three months or so, and then starts back, I cannot imagine the break lasting longer than March. He could even return by the end of it, though I feel sometime mid April is most likely. It would be strange in my opinion for him to wait until May or June. I disregard health issues of course.

I agree at first i was thinking March but with this new serialization round happening, it won't probably won't be until April when he returns. Unless Jump just throws him in anytime and have bigger issues

The only thing we've heard so far was him preparing the manuscript - but I didn't sure he prepared one or all chapters

Going to translate the interview since it is in german:

Hello mr Koujina, thank you for taking the time for a short interview with us.

Koujina: Thanks you, likewise.

JPC: Can you still remember what you put emphasis on when working on Hunter x Hunter?

Koujina: We all could keep reading the manga over and over again, but looking at pictures is rather passive. With this thought, we reconfigured the structure of the work, so that everything could be clearly understood by everyone.
This work contains many unique names, which cannot be conveyed by listening alone. Due to that, we wanted to convey the content of the pictures by using script and other effects in the anime episodes.

JPC: When working on the Anime, what did you start with?

Koujina: As I outlined above, I wanted to make the scenario easily understandable for people that would see HxH for the first time, especially children. The same is true for characterdesign. It was done in a way that would make the characters memorable and feeling familiar to most people.

JPC: Besides the very successful HxH anime, you also were responsible for the adaptation of several other works like Rainbow: Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin. Do you have favourites among your works?

Koujina: Of course i am intrigued personally by both works. Another example would be 'Kiba', which is an original work that shows a strong, but lonely hero figure, which was something i always wanted to work on. Please watch it.

JPC: Is there a franchise you would like to work on?

Koujina: I love horses, especially horse races. Tyiyou no Makibao (never released outside of Japan) is a Manga i would like to adapt into anime. Even when it would be hard, i would also love to adapt Haruki Murakamis 'Kafka on the shore' as an anime.

JPC: Did you know the HxH Manga or the first anime adaptation before working on your adaptation?

Koujina: To be honest, i did not know either. I did not even know it exists. I could start from scratch with that work and i think that might have been a good thing. It would have been harder if I had known the manga before, haha.

JPC: Do you have certain rituals when working?

Koujina: I do not have daily rituals. When i feel burnt out, I watch my favourite movie 'Amadeus'. That's all. When i am working creatively, it often happens that i get impatient. Then this movie calms me down.

JPC: How did you start working in the anime industry?

Koujina: When i was in highschool, i was amazed by the works of Senpai Hiroshi Watanabe, who is an animator. He was allowed to work with Animator Toyoo Ashia, who he respected a lot. This motivated me. Of course, I was good at drawing as child and got praise for it, which made me happy. From that point on, I knew that I wanted to make money by drawing.

JPC: Do you get a lot of feedback? If so, how do you deal with it?

Koujina: Voices from fans give us energy that is also transferred into our productions. It makes us very happy. But you cannot listen to them too much, because then their ideas are merged with my own. I am a person that can be influenced very easily, thus I try to be relaxed about feedback.

JPC: Can you imagine to make another part of HUnter x Hunter? Is there something you'd do differently?

Koujina: If they let me, I'd like to do so. But i would also be interested in how a younger director would handle things. Animations change with time, so in the future, it could be that there would be more usage of 3D

JPC: Do you watch anime privately? If so, do you take inspiration from it?

Koujina: I usually do not. This is unfortunate, especially when they are interesting, haha. But even tho I do not watch anime, I think a lot about how they were made, for example how the premise is and how it was played out. That's why i watch lots of action movies privately. This way of thinking can be used for a lot of things, not just anime.

JPC: Is there something that came very easy to you when adapting HxH? Was there a special event that you still remember?

Koujina: In the Manga, there is a character called Kite in the beginning. But his appearance in the Anime came much later for several reasons. Making his appearance was hard. It didn't work without some problems. When I think about it, a lot of painful memories come up, haha.
The team worked very hard on it, and in the end, everyone contributed his part.

JPC: You are boss of studio live now. Could you describe your usual workday?

Koujina: Japanese animation industry has a lack of workforce. So it is very important to train young people. I give seminars 3 times a week for animators. At the moment, i am overseeing an animation that is meant to be a cinema movie. Also i am doing animation rough drafts for 'karakuri circus', think about new plans for chracters and oversee the work of others as boss, including our own team.
I listen to their problems and try to find solutions. I don't even take money for it, haha.

JPC: What did you like most about HxH? Maybe a scene or a certain character?

Koujina: I liked meruem's last appearance in episode 135. It was hard to do this scene, because it was almost exclusively moved along with words and it was hard to animate it. The opening and ending were also very special for this episode, so that it almost felt like a movie.
When it comes to characters, i liked a lot of them, but Killua was probably my favourite.

JPC: Do you have some words for the german HxH fans?

Koujina: The manga has lots of overseas fans, probably a lot from germany too. That's why I feel like i neglected these fans and appologize if you are angry. In a timespan of 4 years i put a lot of energy into this work. If it was even a little fun for you, i would be happy. I've never been to Germany, but if I ever have the chance, i would like to hear the feelings of german fans about the work.

JPC: Thanks a lot for the Interview, mr Koujina.

Supposedly the Voyage Arc end in next 5 volumes (v42) do you guys think it's possible to get anime adaptaton before we enter DC?. Sure it's a cliffhanger, but HxH is so popular and changes in anime studios aren't rare these days (I mean we know what happened to OPM). Though, I still prefer madhouse to take charge again and have same creative staff involved, like Takahiko Abiru, Sawada, etc. Kojina is incredible director, but I'd loved if Abiru take the helm. He seems genuinely in love with his works.
