No, the stars aren't an exact measurement of power (being purely a measurement of achievement), but I don't think it's pressing it to use them as a measurement for what -tier or -level hunter a hunter is (mid-tier, low-level). I'd imagine, if I lived in that world, I'd use it as a rough estimate - i.e., if, say, two hunters whom I was unfamiliar with were fighting in a tournament and I was to place a bet, and one was 0-star and the other 3-star, I don't think it is not-intelligent at all to use the star as a basis for my bet. If I were a fighter myself, I might be more hesitant going up against a 3-star hunter based on the assumed experience (and skill and ability that comes from experience) that I would assume would have come with those high accomplishments.

Though yeah, there are faults with it - putting Kite and Morel in the 1-star being the most obvious. I'd rank them on the level of 2-star, but the nature of my choice of ranking naming kept me from it - because Morel IS a 1-star hunter, and I'd personally put him at least a bit above Kite, based on the fact that he is Knuckle's teacher, and Gon put Knuckle and Kite on the same level. The order I had put them is generally from weakest to lowest, and as said, they represent ranges.

This thread is made for all discussions of who's stronger than who. Who's more experienced and why? How? Because....
So yea I apperciate all opinions here honestly and much respect to does who provide evidence and reason their claims.

I personally can't recognize the stars as Tiers because it's not what they originally or natural represent.
Even if receiving them are through gathering experience and achievements...You would still be able to attain stars if your field of expertise isn't dangerous or doesn't require a high lv of martial arts or physical prowness.
Also Underworld like Characters such as the spiders, Illumi or Hisoka would have no interest in tutoring or mentoring a random Hunter to teach them Nen & their areas of interest wouldn't attain them any stars in their life time.

Only 3 star hunters revealed are Botobai, Cheadle & Partison..All Zodiacs
2 Star hunters revealed are Miazistom,Ging, Biscuit & Tearedin.

Idk we can see what others think..What did you think of my new list

Well, i do think that the stars can be used as a very ´vague margin of strength.

A hunter who aquired one or several stars is very very likely to a) be very intelligent or at least very proficient in his field and b) having a very high level of nen mastery.

While that does not necessarily mean that the hunter is into martial arts, usually, the hunters who can handle nen well at can hold their own in battle.

Hunter like Morel and Knov are definitely not your usual fighting type characters.
their abilities can be used for fighting howeverm but that is because they are very variable in using them.

morel had a lot of different ways to use his smoke to be useful in the ant arc, but it never seemed to me like his smoke is primary thought as a weapon or like Morel would be the type to go to heaven's arena.
His mastery over the smoke alone allowed him to use it in very many different ways.

Of course there can be characters whose abilitiy is very variable but rather weak in a straight up one on one fight who still get stars.
A character like pakonoda for example could be a very succesful investigator in the hunter community and get a star for it, or a very sucessful blacklist hunter while still not being a very strong fighter.

But i think it is more likely to have the case in which a star hunter outclasses most nonstar hunters by his sheer experience alone.

It's certainly difficult to place many of the more powerful characters that we haven't seen in action yet. However, I think that it's absolutely impossible for Netero to have died the strongest human. Netero did what he did for the sake of humanity. If he were truly the strongest fighter he would have bombed Meruem from the sky, 5 million lives is nothing compared to the entirety of the human race and if Netero was the only person who had any chance of defending mankind from the threat of the dark continent he would not have allowed himself to die. I don't think Netero was lying when he said he was no longer amongst the strongest Nen users and that Ging was among the strongest four in the world. At the very least Ging must have been above Netero and I'm almost completely certain Beyond was too. I think Netero fought Meruem alone not because he was the only one who could but because he needed to determine if he could still live and defend mankind since he'd agreed to allow humanity to explore the dark continent once more after he passed away. Therefore, he must have intended to hand over responsibility for mankind to a more powerful younger generation. Anyway think about it, after accurately assessing the total danger wrought by the the chimera ants there are still multiple levels of deadliness higher on dark continent creatures than them. The obvious implication being that there are hunters who could have handled the full force of the chimera ant power that accurately catalog the danger posed by more foes. If this were not the case chimera ant and up would simply be classified as unkillable mofo. I think that the chimera ants only survived as long as they did because they didn't encroach on the civilized world and the really powerful hunters. I don't think the fighter Zodiacs were simply being arrogant when they said that Netero should have requested their help.

I created a tier system for HxH recently and I want to share it on this website. Here is the original post below tell me what you guys think of it.
For a while now i've been reading into many different tier systems on this subreddit and other forums so i'm going to finally try myself to make sense of the powerscale that togashi has set up in this series and make it easier to understand how strong the characters really are.
First up is Low Tier which includes people who are capable of superhuman feats and those that are nen-sensitive whether they realize or not. Examples are hunter exam gon and killua, johness the dissector, komugi etc.
The next tier system is Mid Tier which is be divided into
*lower mid tier- Includes people who have had their aura awakened and are training the basics of nen.
*solid mid tier- Includes nen-users that are adept in the basics of nen and training more advanced techniques like Gyo and In. Examples are yorknew Gon and Killua, greed island fodder etc.
*upper mid tier- Includes nen-users who are training in advanced nen-fighting techniques and developing a combat hatsu ability or nen-users have have a special hatsu with weaker nen combat abilities. Example include Greed Island gon and killua, pakunoda, kortopi, neon, abengane, etc.
Following this the next tier system is High Tier which is divided into
*lower high tier- Includes nen-users who are adept in nen-fighting and have developed combat hatsu. Examples include pre-invasion Chimera ant gon and killua, goreinu, tsezuguerra, shizuku, shalnark, binolt, etc.
*solid high tier- Includes nen-users who are experts in nen-fighting and have strong combat hatsu and abilities. Examples include the likes of Hisoka, Feitan, Phinks, Nobunaga, Genthru, Zeno, Godspeed Killua, Enraged Gon, etc.
*upper high tier- Includes nen-users who are masters in nen-fighting and have very strong combat hatsu and abilities. They also usually have varied and complex hatsu. These are some of the most powerful human characters revealed so far. Examples are Chrollo, Razor, Biscuit, Kite, etc.
Beyond this is the final tier system Top Tier which is divided into
*lower top tier- Includes the top 5 users/seirin group level nen users. Humans on this tier are the most powerful nen-users in the world and are at the limit of human potential. Characters at this level would include Ging, Botobai, and possibly Beyond Netero.
*top tier- This is the tier of the Royal guards. Human nen-users at this level only appear once in a lifetime. If a human is able to reach this level he has transcended the limits of human potential and has become one of the most if not the most powerful human in the world. The only known human to reach this level was netero when he first created the hyakushiki kannon. Old man Netero was also at this level.
*upper top tier- Includes pre-rose Meruem, Prime Netero and Adult Gon. This is the absolute pinnacle of nen power. Only Nen-users who have surpassed human limitation, the lower top tier, and entered the middle top tier beyond it could hope to reach this final stage by they reach their prime. Nen-users at this level are gods in mortal form.
*God Tier-Beyond the final upper top tier it is no longer accurate to view the beings who belong to it as nen-users constrained by the normal rules of nen. The beings at this level should regarded as a force of nature, gods with unlimited power. The only characters shown at this level so far are post-rose meruem and nanika.
Let me know what you think of my tier system. If you think certain characters belong in different tiers or have a different tier system than mine let it be known in the comments.

It is basically the same as any other tierlist really.
In the beginning u did focus on profiency in nen, which is at least consistant, but later on, you, like almost any other tierlist, only valued fighting prowess (except for alluka).

I am not sure what tierlists are for anyway. We know that the powers of HxH charakters vary a lot.

For example, zsezguerra was a start hunter and said he has lost a lot of his battle capacity because he didnt train.
for most ppl in hxh, we dont even know the extent of their powers yet.

All of those lists come down to 'oh well the royal guards, netero and meruem were pretty strong, right?'

I don't see the meaning in this.

Also, the non battle feats seem usually much greater to me in their nen usage than simply killing stuff.
Kortopis ability for example is insanely useful and unique. The same goes for buscuits hatsu more than for her fighting.

I really do not see HxH as a battlemanga in which tierlists do actually matter.

I can make such lists for dragon ball, because i know there are characters who will never (and if only for a short time) be stronger or equal to another character and every conflict is solved by straight up one on one matches in the end.

But that does not apply to HxH

I still think my list here is accurate. At least considering what we know so far.

@tupadre97:A lot of subdivisions, too many with some characters who should not be here. Komugi should not even be in low tiers, she is weaker than the average human and is able to use her Aura only for Gungi. I would not put Gon and Killua at the level of any member of the Troupe right now. Seirin memebers have hype but it's all they have.

It is basically the same as any other tierlist really.

Tsezguerra had strength but he became weaker because he stopped practicing the basics. You'd expect the stronger characters to not have that problem. The best fighters can keep up with anyone of their level as long as they keep strengthening their Aura, continue to train the basics to control their Aura flow and have a fitting Hatsu, the rest is a matter of strategy, experience and physical abilities. At least that's how someone aiming to become an excellent fighter should be, as Gon said in the CA arc.

I mean, even then, the likes of the spiders, Hisoka and Zeno might be too low and god speed killua too high

Like, if you think God Speed Killua in the show is as strong as Zeno, you don't know what you're talking about tbh

Even Tsubone was able to keep up with Killua (to an extent), that means any main member older than Killua would be able to do so too

Anyway, the tier list itself is pretty redundant since Nen usually (also) has supplementary uses, not just combat purposes. Pakunoda and Kortopi have in fact very precious abilities, but in terms of fighting power, yes, they're outmatched by others. If you're gonna tier list things, doing so by comparing Hatsu would be better than overall fighting power.

The tier list is mainly to classify the overall strength of a person and compare them to other nen users. For example pouf never fought anyone but i would consider him lower top tier because of his incredible feats of nen ability. Nen isn't always about combat but usually nen-users with strong nen are also good fighters as well. Its just how power seems to scale in this verse.

The subdivisions mainly exist to explain the differences in ability of ppl of the same tier. For example Tzezguerra may have been lower high tier in Greed Island but if he trained he could potentially be solid high tier. The differences between tiers can be blurry as well because someone in a lower tier might have an ability that is a perfect match for someone who is in a higher tier like Godspeed Killua vs Pouf. This tier list is to categorize the overall ability of nen-users it doesn't mean it automatically determines who is actually stronger though.

Also I do believe Godspeed Killua and Enraged Gon were definitely as strong as the troupe. Especially Killua a Godspeed blitz from him could probably beat anyone in that sub-tier really especially if they don't know about the ability.

As for the seirin group going by the hype there members had to have been at least upper high tier to lower top tier. Who else could be considered that legendary?

Going by hatsu can't be the only factor to base a tier list when you have ppl like Meruem who is stronger than everyone and basically has no hatsu. You can make a hatsu tier list if you'd like (actually i might do that for fun) but this is more of an overall ability list so you can compare the strengths of characters. As for godspeed Killua yes tsubone was able to keep up with speed of lightning which is movement speed but there's no way she could react to a whirlwind blitz. If whirlwind can blitz youpi it can blitz anyone except maybe pitou, netero, and meruem. The only thing Killua is lacking now is strength but i'm pretty confident he's strong enough to kill/incapacitate any solid high tier with godspeed at this point especially if they don't have knowledge of the ability.

The thing is, i do not think tierlists in HxH to compare strength are possible.

As i said, it basically comes down to 'some rare exceptions are definitely stronger than other characters, while the rest can only roughly be sorted by "charactesr who focus on fight" on those who dont'.

That is, in my opinion, rather fruitless.

I dont think the characters who actually do fight can be sorted in tiers. Some seem like they could probably take down another character quite competently, but that can really only be seen if it actually happens.

Like, how to know whether tzezguerra cannot take on kite? We never saw any of those two show what they are really capable off except for glimpses.
Or how to know whether feitan cannot beat chrollo?

The examples of human characters who actually focus themselves on fighting are almost all in the high or top tier. (and the rest is usually either in training or fodder).

So, in normal, not ant related straight up fights you would get about 2 tiers with some rather vague sub tiers.

However, since most conflicts are not resolved by straight up one on one fights in HxH, the value of judging who would win a straight up fight seems slim, anyway.

A character like Pakunoda who'd want to bring down some enhancer would definitely not go straight up to him to fight but use other means for that. This is what makes HxH interesting.

Furthermore, different oaths and restrictions shake up a possible tierlist even more

Well, even in manga where strategy has less importance certain things are made obvious. That's why there are always speculations.

Tsezguerra could definitely not beat Kite, Gon and Killua managed to outclass him in terms of basic Nen skills. For Kite however, they were burdens and all the Ants recognized that he was the most dangerous. After observation, Gon compared Knuckle to Kite and during their exchanges it was clear that Knuckle could have easily killed him if he wanted.

Chrollo is considered the strongest and more dangerous member of the Troupe, his physical and basic Nen skills, intelligence and Hatsu are all good, he was even able to stall against two of the strongest Zoldycks. It's not that i say Feitan couldn't cause him trouble but a power gap does exist. If you ask me who's stronger between Feitan and Phinks however, it would be a different matter.

It depends on the Enhancer in question but if Pakunoda does not face the opponent in a straight fight then it doesn't matter in a tier list. Tier lists are only for straight fights after all. Gon beat Genthru for example but he didn't win because he was stronger, in a straigth fight, without GI rules, he would have been killed easily.

yes, but dont you see that in that case, a tierlist is meaningless in a manga like HxH where straight up one on one fights are rather rare?

A lot of the fights we do have come down more to observation and being lucky enough to have a counter in your arsenal against what your opponent is doing.
Strength gaps do exist, but they do not have a lot of impact in most situations in the manga.

For example, noone would have suspected Kurapica to be able to take on Uvo without having seen that fight and knowing what kurapica can do.
However, he created an ability uniquely for that purpose.

then we got matches like Hisoka's Kastro fight, where he is actually outclassed in some ways by Kastro but still wins because he has the determination to keep his cool and Kastro doesnt.

Then we got fights like any fight Morel was in, in which he either won or fought to a draw by mindgames.

I honestly cannot remember any fight in HxH between non fodder characters in which 'tiers' would have mattered, except for meruem and the royal guards.

There are some genius characters who are very unlikely to be beaten by other characters, like ging or netero.
But no HxH character in their right mind would actually try to beat a character who outclasses them in a fair fight, so i just do not see the benefit in making hypothesis about those kinds of fights.

As for the example: Tzezguerra is a star hunter. If he'd need to eliminate Kite, he'd probably find a way which at least gives him a shot at doing so. Whether that is by training again to confront him straight up (and he said himself that he'd be stronger than greed island gon and killuah if he was at his prime+had a lot more experience).

I never understood the point in tierlists outside of fighting games, because the character wins who the plot demands to win.

Yeah the entire point behind the enigma of nen is that fights aren't straight-up 1v1 battles, but fights of wit using powers tailored for their personal use, allowing them to deal with different kinds of threats.

Ultimately, it's not about winning bouts of fights but survival in the harsh world.

Notice how all the hunters are eccentric individuals - their individuality spawned their powers. So it doesn't make sense to put those in a 1v1 situation

Well?
I don't know :4head but I prefer Feitan.

Personality is important for Nen users but it's always fitting only when you are a genius like Komugi or the Royal Guards. Some make bad choices(Kastro, Cheetu etc) and not everyone has an ability which is combat related. However some characters can be good fighters even with a Hatsu not related to combat like Biscuit.

Same, don't think Phinks would be able to win from sun explosion. I suppose he could bait it, hide somewhere, then reappear... But, straight-up 1v1, I think Feitan would win as well

One of the more interesting things about the system imo - you can make crucial mistakes which upset your growth

It is true that fights in hxh aren't about straight up 1 on 1 fights but still there are characters who fit into the battle shonen troupe of wanting to fight solo anyway like uvo, the main characters, hisoka etc. Thats one of the main reasons i made the tier list. So characters can be compared in the sense of a traditional battle shonen because sometimes those fights can still appear in the this manga since it is still a shonen manga.
