The Titan from OVA 1 'Illse's Diary' is still a mystery to this day. It would've been the most valuable test subject for Hange up to date. The Titan from this OVA bowed down like a human to Illse greeting her and saying 'Welcome YMIR'S people' which means he knew Ymir. So here is the theory: Ymir taught that Titan how to talk once she ate Marcel and turned back into a human. Armin said in episode 19/20 when a Titan was learning to climb a tree , he said to Jean "This shows that they are capable of learning." which suggests Ymir somehow taught that Titan how to talk. As we know certain Titans can talk e.g MT. If Ymir did teach the Titan how to talk I reckon she would have first tried to talk to it in her human form and then shifted into a Titan to show she is the same. A reason why Ymir would teach the Titan how to talk could possibly be because she herself knows how it is like to be a Titan since she said she was a mindless Titan for about 60 years. Ymir described being a Titan as a never-ending 'Nightmare' it might mean that the human inside the Titan body is conscious and can see what's happening but cannot control the body thus eating other humans without control becomes a Nightmare. In the OVA Illse starts screaming at the Titan asking why they eat people and at that moment the Titan grabs his eyelids and starts ripping them off which might mean he's trying to show he hates to do it?(Something like that) Once the Titan gets angry at Illse's screaming he bites off her had to stay it , he might've did that because he didn't know how to use his jaw to answer? I believe that the Titan from 'Illse's Diary' was a conscious Titan fully aware of what he was doing but the Titan nature of killing humans worked on him like a fully developed OCD/Obsession he can't control , yet he stopped chasing Hange and the other Corps and went back to his tree. In the theory about timetraveling the writer says that in 2000 years (To you , in 2000 years) most Titans have intelligence. So maybe the Titan that Illse met was a titan for the whole 107 years the Titans were around and over those 100 years it developed intelligence. The Smiley Titan also seemed to possess intelligence to a certain degree since it killed Eren's mother before eating her , which may mean it knew that killing it's prey/target will ensure they can't escape.

Thanks for reading, lets start a nice discussion! :derp

Interesting. I always assumed that titan knew her as a human, but maybe she tried to teach more of them to "behave themselves," shall we say. In that case, by saying "Ymir's People," he might have been referring to himself. I've also always wondered if he pulled at his face because he was trying to stop himself from giving in to the instinct to eat Ilse, whether it was some manner of attempt to escape from his titan body, or both. It's certainly odd behaviour, whatever his intentions were. On the other hand though, Ymir's titan can't speak very well. She's nowhere near as good at enunciating as the beast titan is. But it would be interesting if she could teach titans to be more aware of themselves, or teach the people in the titans to restrain the titan body even if they can't fully control it.

That's been my opinion as well.

Remember, Connie's mother was transformed into a Titan as well, and she talked to Connie when she first saw him. I highly, highly doubt that she learned/someone taught her how to speak in such a short period of time!

As such, I believe the Titan from Ilse's diary knew Ymir before he was turned into a Titan, I think, but what the OP mentioned is also possible I guess.

But see, to me, that Titan "talked" because he had/felt such a strong bond to Ymir, which is why he managed to articulate those few words in a small moment of lucidity, and the same can be said for Connie, his Mom, and their bond as mother/son.

On that note, I don't think Ymir has taught Titans how to speak. In this case, for now, I think that they either knew eachother or something.

My guess about this is that Ymir was a Queen/Princess or something like it, some kind of leader, who was very loved by her people, but then everyone got "titanized" so she has some of her followers in titan form walking around.
I also think the talking titan knows Ymir from when they were humans.

That would explain 'Ymir' since in a certain Mythology I think Norse , Ymir was like the ultimate god or something , maybe thats why she's with Historia? Maybe she is a Reiss but she just didn't say till now?

Didn't Ymir said though that she was greatly despised and had to die for the sake of others (thus seeing a great part of herself in Historia)? However, whether she's royalty or not, I do agree that she seems to have been (or maybe still is) a person of great importance. I also think her home was probably titanized by the Beast titan, since she already knew who he was and that he was responsible for the chaos at Ragako. I wonder if they sent her to some sort of suicide mission to the Warrior village, considering she claims that there were people in her hometown that wanted her dead, and that she stole her titan powers something from the warriors, but then got more than she bargained for. I think there's the possibility of three factions existing, the king, the warriors (whether the Ape titan belongs to this faction is still not clear) and "ymir's people" (though it may be possible that Ymir is the last survivor of wherever she comes from).
