Is Hisoka really a bad guy?

Consider we saw people getting eaten alive or impaled in the misty swamp, some people definitely died there. I don't see how the threat of death is necessary to determine who is qualified. Even if we're solely interested in combat ability, you can simply do every round like the second time Killua went to the exam. Indeed, the tester was being lazy and was commenting that they can just make every round 'beat 5 guys' and it's easy to see that with a minimum amount of supervision, you'd have relatively few deaths. You can even make it a rule where you can't kill someone but require that people wear their name tag in a visible location at all times.

Hunters as an organization simply do not care for the deaths of the weak. Hisoka said his motivation to join the Hunters was so that he can kill people legally and Netero was fine with that as a motivation. I'm sure it's intended to be something more like 'Hunters can't be bogged down by normal people when they need to accomplish their mission' but we see that plenty of people within the association interprets that as "Hunters don't need to care if normal people die as long as it's not heinous". In the Election Arc, after Hisoka killed all the hunters trying to stop him, Morel basically said the guys who died fighting Hisoka deserved it because they were weak and he warned them not to fight. This is a guy we know is a genuinely good guy who decided to go against the plan to save more civilians during the Chimaera Arc even though the plan views losing half a million civilian as just necessary collateral damage. Even good-natured Hunters seems to believe that while the weak should be protected from atrocities (e.g. Ants purging the entire population), they do not necessarily need to be protected from the strong, and the weak should definitely get out of the way of the strong or risk the consequences. Going by this logic, Hisoka is perfectly fine as a Hunter. Maybe he won't be fine if he wasn't a Hunter, but since he's become one, that no longer matters. In fact I'd say he's quite aware that his worldview makes him a bad guy if he was a normal person (normal person have to deal with consequences for killing people), which is why he made a point to get a Hunter's license because the world of HXH says that once you're a Hunter, killing random guys is no longer considered a bad thing.

hisoka is the type of person irl to be done a documentary about being a serial killer lol. he is good when he wants to be not because others expect him to.
His unpredictable outbursts and lunacy can make him either a great ally and or an antagonist..... his chaotic core characteristics would never make him a good guy, he is good only by self-motivation & not by pure instinct.

Hisoka definitely a chaotic character and by no means he's a good one, but he isnt a absolute chaotic evil either, I'd say he walks on that thin line between neutral and evil at least before he gets "turned on" now that is when he could very well be considered a chaotic evil character, he will attack whatever he finds and Gon himself after watching him like that thought up a pretty good conclusion on hisoka's psyche state.

When he keeps up some reason in himself he isnt as bad, as lets say Chrollo in comparison is worst in that sense for how he uses his reasoning for evil, or Pariston whom we know his sociopathic tendencies are quite dangerous as well.

Actually I wouldn't describe Pariston as a sociopath (nor his tendencies for that matter) as he is very well integrated into society and is even a respected and loved member by quite a number of people. His issues come from his twisted definition of love, and only few individuals know about it. But of course I agree that he is still very dangerous, a true unrestrained beast.

Illumi (maybe even Hisoka to some degree) on the other hand strikes me as a sociopath.

Come on, hisoka is evil even within the context of HxH, I don't see how that is even debatable. His sole goal in life is to fight to the death with as many people as possible, he kills for fun and without regard for bystanders or innocent people. Even during his fights at the tower he fought without regard for spectators... He literally get aroused at the prospect of killing someone strong. He might not have some grand evil goal he aspires to but everything about hisoka makes him a twisted degenerate with a murder boner.

His not the traditional bad guy that's for sure. Let's just say he's the bad guy at the end, it's inevitable.
