Now, before everyone shows up at my door with torches and pitchforks, let me explain my theory. You all recognize Orochimaru as a genius who was once candidate for Hokage. You recognize him for his extensive work in developing new techniques in ninjutsu. The manga has shown him doing such things. He's shown to have done experimentation to develop new jutsus. He has experimented on himself to make himself a more durable/deadly fighter. He has developed a poison that can paralyze his foe. How many of these accomplishments can Orochimaru claim full credit?
Something doesn't make sense...
Orochimaru's white snake body enhancements, his work on Yamato, his work on Danzou's arm, his body transfer technique, his poisonous blood...something doesn't seem right. All of these accomplishments would require extensive knowledge of the human body and poisons. Now, I'm not completely discounting the possibility that Orochimaru gathered this knowledge by himself, but from what I've seen in the manga, Orochimaru isn't the one doing all the nitty-gritty stuff.
Kabuto's Resume
Kabuto is the one taking care of Kimimaro. He's also the one who nurses Orochimaru before and after each of his body transfers. Orochimaru also commented that Kabuto made it possible to re-use dead bodies for experimentation. So what does Orochimaru do exactly? I'm very dubious to the idea that Orochimaru can take full credit for all his noted accomplishments. I mean he did not realize Tsunade was about to kill him. Kabuto had to come to his rescue. Kabuto, as a medic, recognize what Tsunade was doing with her chakra. Orochimaru did not have a clue of what was going on. This shows that Orochimaru has little to no knowledge when it comes to medical ninjutsu. You know what else? Kabuto is noted for the following:
-Collecting a lot of intel
-Extensive medical knowledge
-Advanced medical ninjutsu
-Able to re-use dead bodies
-Able to use dead bodies as decoys/puppets
Now, doesn't Kabuto's resume have a better fit when discussing Orochimaru's accomplishments? Kabuto is more likely to be the one doing the research to gather information necessary for all these experiments. Kabuto's the one with the medical background which allows one to do operations on a person's body (Orochimaru, Danzou, Yamato). He's likely to be the one working on the body transfer jutsu for the same reason. But what about the poisonous blood? Who would have been able to come up with something like that? Neither Kabuto nor Orochimaru seemed to have knowledge in the area...oh wait! Didn't Kabuto spend a crapload of quality time with Sasori? Ding ding! There you go!
But why?
But why would Kabuto help out Orochimaru like this? My guess is that Kabuto needed a guinea pig and Orochimaru's obsession with improving his body and being immortal gave Kabuto the perfect candidate. I'm pretty sure Orochimaru didn't suspect anything.
However, if Kabuto was capable of all this, why did he stand as Orochimaru's right-hand man instead of going on his own long ago? I suspect it's because Orochimaru took Kabuto in as a child and raised him so Kabuto is showing his gratitude.
What's next?
Now that Orochimaru's gone, Kabuto lost a very valuable guinea pig. So, let's just take back all our hard work and incorporate in our own body, thus Kabuto implants Orochimaru's cells. Sounds like what Madara did when he decided to "take back" the Rinnegan he gave to Nagato. More parallels between these two villains
One last thing...
Why do posters come down on Kabuto for taking Orochimaru's cells as his own? He took something to enhance his abilities. Just like Orochimaru did (experiments), just like Kakashi (Sharingan), just like Madara (Rinnegan), just like Deidara/Kakuzu (kinjutsu), etc. That's just a part of furthering your development as a fighter (in this universe). You shouldn't think less about a fighter for doing such a thing.
I've seen some posters comment that Orochimaru's Edo Tensei is stronger because Kabuto needed Orochimaru's chakra to further control Edo Tensei. Really, guys? Orochimaru controlled two bodies. Kabuto is controlling like one hundred. I don't think it's a big deal that Kabuto needs a bit more chakra to gain more control. The fact that Kabuto can control so many at once and can remotely kill one of his zombie's personalities (Orochimaru needed to shove a kunai in their head while Kabuto killed Haku and Zabuza's personality from afar) shows he has a better grasp of Edo Tensei.
