The Plot
Source: Chapter 595
Source: Chapter 667
In-depth Analysis:
Law and Luffy may get on well, but that's not reason for them to become Nakama. There are people whom Luffy respects such as Smoker and Coby, but anyone in his way is an enemy. We just can't forget that Law is a Captain with his own crew, and 1 of the 3 main Supernova at that. It would be rather anticlimactic for one such as Law to simply become another fan.
With that said, he's clearly a contender for One Piece and is likely to either split ways with Luffy or betray Luffy; ultimately, Law is still an enemy of Luffy, just like Coby and Smoker are.

2 Years LaterLaw: . . .We wait for the right moment . . . that's all I'm saying. No need to get hasty, it's not as though One Piece is going anywhere. Even so, with Blackbeard and his crew stirring things up . . . If Pirates are taking each other out, then so much the better for us, no need to get us involved in the small stuff. Now, stop blathering . . . and just do as I say. Where there's a position, I'll take it!

Luffy coincidentally arrives at Punk Hazard where Law is currently stationed at, he never anticipated this arrival since he says it was chance that brought him here (fate - which I expand on in a future work).Law: I've been doing a little thinking. . . I came ere to discuss something with you, Strawhat!
I don't doubt it was pure chance that brought you here. You don't seem like the kind of guy who would subordinate himself to another Pirate. . . Then form an alliance with us! If you and I work together, we may just be able to pull this off.
I have a plan to take down the Yonko!
In-depth Analysis:
ConclusionNote: Couple thing that needs pointing out is, people who have gone for One Piece have always gone after Emperors:
Therefore, Law going after a Yonko is consistent with actions one takes to find One Piece. Are there any actions he takes that contradict going after One Piece? If so, we have to ask, why? This will help us determine his true motives as I intend to show with this analysis.
- Moriah went after Kaido in his aim to be Pirate King⁽⁴⁵⁶⁾.
- Crocodile also went after Whitebeard in his aim to be Pirate King (SBS).
Law's Ambition
Destroying the world was his goal before his days were numbered, and before Rocinante gifted him with prolonged life as well as transforming him from monster to Human. After Rocinante's death, the goal to destroy the world was diffused.
The only thing is, rather than destroy the world, he aimed to find One Piece which requires taking down a Yonko (being Kaido); of course this also includes the benefits of Joker getting killed by bearing the brunt of Kaido's anger; this is killing 2 birds with 1 stone so to speak.
It wouldn't really be any different from Luffy taking a detour to save Ace (essentially postponing meeting with the crew) or obtain Ace's Mera Mera no Mi, we still wouldn't say because of this sentimental detour and digression from objective, he's quit going after One Piece or meeting with his crew, no? Law's take down of Joker isn't any different.
Take note too, that going after One Piece has another purpose, it mirrors the defiance he has towards the World Government after they destroyed his place of birth, along with his parents. The World Government are against those seeking One Piece, what better way than to be rebellious and do the opposite?
Luffy at PH was coincidence
I think its easy to assume that Law was waiting for Luffy, but we know how Luffy got to PH, it was simply coincidence:
- Luffy saw the Island that was most intriguing as it wasn't even recognized by the Log Pose, it's not like this meeting was planned to begin with.
![]()
- Law also says, this meeting was luck, not planned.
![]()
- Law without knowing of Luffy, was already proceeding with the necessary steps required to take down a Yonko, not something he conjured the moment Luffy appeared. This tells us he's really been planning extensively, and the very fact that he allied with Luffy whom he wasn't expecting was pure coincidence.
![]()
- Robin has also pointed out that such alliances usually end with betrayal.
Was Joker his end-game?TL;DR: Ultimately, this proves that Law never abandoned the plan because Joker was his ONLY goal as most seem to believe, he simply got provoked into engaging Joker which wasn't the plan. Joker's just a route to a greater goal, that being, Kaido, and the One Piece.
- Law fighting Joker over the bridge was never a part of the plan. Why then, is he fighting Joker and digressing from the plan?
![]()
- After this fight, Law actually tells us why he became too pre-occupied with Joker (which Sanji pointed out): he got provoked, and this is why Law is warning Luffy to resist Joker's provocation; he makes reference to this by saying "If you don't keep your cool, your life will be forfeit just like me when I faced him before!". Bare in mind, in the lead up to this scene, it's actually not Law's idea to engage with Joker, but Luffy's.
![]()
- Prior to the scene above where Law and Luffy are getting ready to engage Joker, and not long after Law was utterly beat down by Joker on the bridge, Law has come back to his "senses" (well, he's become the pragmatist again and putting his emotions to the side).
- Law actually reminds Luffy who just promised to defeat Joker, that staying on course with the plan is best, somewhat hypocritical since he actually just tried to kill Joker, but we know he was provoked into doing so due to Joker's aptness at playing mind-games; so we see that Law actually was for sticking with the plan.
![]()
- Luffy ironically, is now the one who is bent on taking down Joker, Law was essentially convinced by Luffy who absolutely insisted on taking down Joker.
![]()
- It is after this scene that Law and Luffy decide to take down Joker as opposed to it being Kaido's doing, and devised the "Red Hawk" and "Gamma Knife" plan to kill Joker.

Law ever intended on regrouping with his crew?
His lack of expectation to return back to his crew⁽⁸⁰⁵⁾, is after he got to Dressrosa, and realized the situation at hand, had turned into a completely different monster. For one, Law didn't quite comprehend the gravity of Vergo's words being that Joker is a Tenryuubito⁽⁶⁹¹⁾, and this is where his plans all went haywire:
- Law baited or lured the Marines into "Green Bit" specifically by (purposely) appearing to carelessly reveal their next destination to Smoker, why? So, that Joker who he assumed had lost his privileges would be in battle with the Marines (an Admiral & 2 Vice Admirals). This distraction would buy the alliance time to locate and destroy the SMILE factory.
![]()
- Sanji points out that the Kingdom was rather Peaceful despite losing its King; at this points, there are tell-tale signs that things are spiralling out of control. The lack of chaos compromises the plan.
![]()
- Law has also picked up on what Sanji said too, it's too peaceful, plus, the CP-0 are for some reason, in Dressrosa.
![]()
- Prior to reaching Dressrosa, Law's mannerism here reflect his confidence as everything is going to plan; in Law's mind, Joker was in a checkmate being that he was now a mere Pirate, but it's clear as the above shows, something is wrong.
![]()
- Briefly digressing: At Zou, Law said he forgot he had a Vivre-card because he wasn't expecting to get to Zou after Dressrosa arc; in contrast (before Dressrosa), he is well aware he possesses one and ACTUALLY tells us he's heading for Zou. It's pretty clear he thought this plan was going as planned; there's no reason why making it to Zou should not feel like a certainty.
![]()
- When they finally reach Dressrosa, he even gives Nami a Vivre-card (or, tears one off rather) and reminds us that he mentioned Zou, where his crew would be. His crew also drew him a map of Dressrosa, it looks very much like everything was planned; the only problem is, things took a turn for the worse.
And there's only 1 reason why Law has faith in LuffyIt's important to highlight the significance of the SHs arrival when they did. Law didn't offer his heart to Caesar, it was requested, thus, compromising his plans⁽⁶⁷⁵⁾; Monet's ability to assimilate with snow and provide surveillance was unknown to him - she heard Law's plans with Luffy⁽⁶⁷⁵⁾; Vergo's appearance on the very day SAD was heading for Dressrosa would have ended his entire scheme had the SHs not appeared⁽⁶⁷²⁾.
- The hints are here, he states that he's saving Luffy despite being an enemy because they have a "bond". What is this bond?
![]()
- Also, when Rayleigh appears on Sabaody, he says the '"D" will always bring forth a storm'. Digressing a bit, but I believe this is a hint that Rayleigh is a "D", but the bond he's clearly talking about is the fact that he and Luffy are both from the "D" clan.
![]()
- And when Joker asks, why he trusts the SHs so much? It's not that he trusts them per se, it's because of the "D" initial.
![]()
it's coincidence after coincidence of fortunate events; Luffy appears at the right place & time. Law clearly has some belief in fate. The "D" initial is part reason he saved Luffy despite considering him a future enemy and vice-versa⁽⁶⁶³⁾.
Important to note that this mission Law set out on ALONE could have be soloed, but as has been pointed out, a lot of problems arose that meant he had to ally with the SHs.

Hmmm... if he ever be one day, it might also mean that the series has come to a closure. I imagine that for whatever reason or some event happen, Law has to execute his ability to save Luffy's life, and dies as a result of it. If this is so, it is going to be very heart-breaking and emotional for everyone, even to Luffy himself. In fact I can think of Luffy refusing and rejecting strongly if such an idea ever comes about from Law or anyone else.
) which have not been revealed yet. We would have to wait and see.
Can't imagine him trying to defeat Law. But his attempt may be fun to watch since he has always been a comedian figure in One Piece.
