Science Drawing- Astronomy: Nebula by Ladylola

Spoiler: Commentary

Astronomy, as a natural science, is the study of celestial objects, which includes nebulae. Since the dawn of time, humans have studied the stars and the various celestial objects. To me astronomy is a vast and interesting subject, and I was always attracted to it. This piece represents a nebula, which is an interstellar cloud of dust, hydrogen, helium and various other gases.
As an artist I find studies such as nebulae or other celestial phenomenons to be very interesting, but also challenging. Indeed in other to replicate the effects that nature itself has made with ease, it takes several steps. Here I used watercolors to try to replicate the different clouds of dust and gases that make the nebula. White gouache paint is sprinkled on top to give the illusion of shining stars.
As for how science itself played a role in the making of this piece, the different white spaces that you can see are achieved by adding salt to the still wet paint. The salt absorbs the water where it touches it, and we get those small ripples.
And just so, science can have applications in other fields such as art, and is a part of our everyday lives.
