Midnight wins, this isn't debatable, literally canon. Outright stated to be the most fearsome back in the OS arc, the most significant fighter against Jellal during their little recruitment session and the only one to be noted by August in their short scuffle. The latter two points enforce the fact that the first point is still in effect after the time-skips. Bias aside, there ain't no way Cobra has a chance here.

Meh i don't know about that. Nothing is canon at all. If there was a Midnight vs Cobra in the manga with Midnight winning, i would believe you. But that never happened, and we can't based ourselves on "Midnight is the most fearsome". Back in GMG Jura was supposed to be the strongest human mage that nobody in GMG could defeat, though Laxus did.

Also, saying Midnight is the most fearsome is like having Erza and Wendy say Dimaria is more fearsome than Irene. Tht would be right, as they wouldn't be able to win against Age Seal while they won against Irene. But Irene is still superior to Dimaria. Being fearsome does't mean much, plus as i said those are only words without back up from feats.

In terms of feats, during OS arc Cobra was untouched by Natsu. Only defeated due to a massive bullshit moment of Natsu screaming in his hear. On the other hand Midnight was defeated kind of easily by Erza.
During the filler arc of sky key thing, Natsu defeated Midnight, and Cobra was STILL untouched by even Erza, who only won due to another very convenient moment of Cobra being distracted by his pet snake Kinana.
Overall only two fighters have managed to land hits on Cobra thus far, fair and square: Jellal and August. In terms of actual feats, Cobra is superior to Midnight.

The most significant fighter against Jellal was indeed Midnight, since he was so strong that he could deal with Cobra easily, the very first one being able to. Midnight was chilling in the back and used his illusion, which is indeed fearsome and pretty hard to deal with. That's very haxy i'll admit, but some top tiers can break out of it, as Laxus did against Mystogan back in BoFT arc, or Erza with her special eye, or Jellal by damaging his eyes. As said previously in this thread, Cobra would hear Midnight (the real Midnight, not present in the illusion but still in the field regardless), so that would allow him to bypass that illusion.

Midnight was indeed noted by August which is impressive. But for all we know we didn't see him say anything about Jellal, despite him being way stronger than Midnight. Anyway, having a "peculiar" magic doesn't mean you'll win against somebody a stronger mage wielding a simpler magic.

Back in GMG Jura WAS the strongest character, except for Laxus (even then, he weakened him to the point that Sting could easily finish him off). Now we have reason to believe otherwise. I see NO reason to believe otherwise here, especially since Midnight has remained the defacto leader and the only one who ever accomplishes anything among the group.

Not really, if they had said it that would mean that hiro had a point to make. They didn't, so its a moot point.

It was hardly that easily, not to mention Erza hard countered Midnight, he still provided her with a fight. Mind you back then Erza was literally leagues above Natsu, to the point that that second origin on top of LFD barely closed the gap between the two after the time-skip (as Erza only activated her second origin late in the arc). OS Natsu had neither of those. So really, Midnight tussling with Erzais actually WAY more impressive then anything Cobra did.

During the filler arc of sky key thing, Natsu defeated Midnight, and Cobra was STILL untouched by even Erza, who only won due to another very convenient moment of Cobra being distracted by his pet snake Kinana.
Never watched it and don't care to because its just that, filler.

Really disagree, Midnights feats blow Cobras out of the water. I rank Cobra at the same level as Racer. Those two hard relatively equal feats and were doing equally well against Jellal and both had the same futile attempt at August to boot.

No doubt they can, but Cobra isn't one of said top-tiers. And I don't even think Midnight would need his illusions to deal with Cobra.

Midnight was indeed noted by August which is impressive. But for all we know we didn't see him say anything about Jellal, despite him being way stronger than Midnight. Anyway, having a "peculiar" magic doesn't mean you'll win against somebody a stronger mage wielding a simpler magic.
Hyberion was the only one of the GoI August also noted, do we see a pattern here?

It means your magic is good enough to impressive the king of magic, someone who destroyed the very character you are pitting Midnight up against without a single word of praise. At the very least that means that Midnights magic is >>> Cobras. And Cobra isn't some sort of massive power house in physical stats either, so I see absolutely no reason to believe that that could close the massive gap that the magic has left.

Except for Laxus, exactly. I'm not trying to diminish Jura's strength or imply that he wasn't top tier back in the day. My point is that hype from words can be misleading. You're saying there's no reason to believe otherwise, well i stated my reasons (which you disagree with).
I don't know what you mean by being the leader, or accomplishing stuff others don't accomplish. Actually when OS was reunited it was Cobra who took the initiative of killing their former leader Brain, Midnight didn't do anything to be honest. And if being the leader automatically means you're beating everyone else in a fight, then this thread would have no point.

I don't understand what you mean <_>
But doesn't matter.

Erza didn't counter Midnight, unless you're sying anyone who can attack him is a counter. As said aabove already by the somebody, the moment Midnight uses his magic to attack, he can not use it to defend himself anymore, which means that any figher who has a long range ability CAN counter just like Erza did. In CObra's case there is a DS roar.
He provided her with a fight because Erza had to find the weaknesses of his magic. Which wasn't an easy task and needed her to tank things and try things out. Once the weaknesses were known the fight was over. It was not a high diff, or a mid diff for that matter.
Erza wasn't leagues above him at all. She was stronger that's for sure, but if the two were to fight back then it would have been a high diff for Erza. That's not what i call being leagues apart.
Losing to Erza isn't more impressive than toying with Natsu. Really, it's not. Even if Natsu was inferior to Erza, in the end he still defeated Zero (and Jellal's power-up was gone at this point). So no, that's just my opinion of course, but Cobra had a way better showing than Midnight in this arc.

Never watched it and don't care to because its just that, filler.
Well you should :zomg
I read countless times that it had been considered as canon, since Hiro stated it himself blablabla. In any case, you're free to disregard feats from this arc, i don't mind.

Really disagree, Midnights feats blow Cobras out of the water. I rank Cobra at the same level as Racer. Those two hard relatively equal feats and were doing equally well against Jellal and both had the same futile attempt at August to boot.
Oh, huh. Welllllllll, we will have to agree to disagree then. =)
Futile attempt? Yes it was futile... Jellal's attempt was futile as well, so was Midnight's. That's really not saying much. August being leagues above (for real this time :derp) them makes all of their attempts futile. The fact that Midnight's magic was stated to be "peculiar" doesn' mean he's stronger than the rest.

No doubt they can, but Cobra isn't one of said top-tiers. And I don't even think Midnight would need his illusions to deal with Cobra.
You'll need to explain how he does anything then. Midnight without his illusions doesn't do much at all. What did he do to Jellal besides illusions? Nothing. Actually once the illusion was stopped by Jellal Midnight already seemed defeated and didn't try anything else.
Cobra isn't top tier but he still can hear Midnight's thoughts, which renders illusions useless. He can also just close his eyes in order to escape the illusion, and still be able to target Midnight or predict his attacks thanks to his ability to hear his thoughts.

Hyberion was the only one of the GoI August also noted, do we see a pattern here?

Wielding a rare, atypical, unusual magic doesn't mean it is stronger than a more basic one.
If August were to see Natsu fight with fire, would he see this is an atypical magic? No he wouldn't. Doesn't mean Midnight is stronger or would win against Natsu just because he wields a rarer magic.
There's no such thing as a "massive gap" between Cobra and Midnight... :facepalm
I really don't agree with that point tbh.

I think we'll have to agree to disagree, because i can see you're putting thoughts into your posts but i really haven't been convinced. And i'm probably not going to convince you either. I'll give you the last word.

Jura was specifically hyped so that it looked all the more impressive when Laxus would inevitably take him down. The context doesn't help you here.

Midnight was the one that Jellal approached when he was recruiting them. Not Cobra. He was also stated to be stronger in the OS arc, fought a stronger opponent in Erza (even defeated Jellal, even if Jellal was rusty af) and was noted by August. Point here is that I can't say the claim that Cobra is stronger here as anything short of being fuelled by bias. Its been a point made time and time again that Midnight is the strongest OS member. Cobra doesn't win out in feats either, far from it.

She had an artificial eye to render Midnights illusions near useless and did not even have to sacrifice her vision to do it, does everyone in this series have an artificial eye? I don't think so, so she very much hard countered him.

He provided her with a fight because Erza had to find the weaknesses of his magic. Which wasn't an easy task and needed her to tank things and try things out. Once the weaknesses were known the fight was over. It was not a high diff, or a mid diff for that matter.
Mid-Diff including a hard counter to his illusions. Cobra actually lost to Natsu, but even if we say he would normally win, it would be around Mid-Diff with Cubelios. High-Extreme Diff without the snake (without the snake Cobra was as strong as Natsu). Erza would have been capable of one-shotting Natsu at that particular point in time. Midnight Easy-Mid Diffs Cobra without Cubelios, High-Diffs him with the snake. I think thats more then fair.

Erza wasn't leagues above him at all. She was stronger that's for sure, but if the two were to fight back then it would have been a high diff for Erza. That's not what i call being leagues apart.
Thats blatantly wrong and you know it. First of all Erza defeated Azuma fueled by the power of Tenrou, Natsu was getting tossed around by Zancrow (who was even weaker then base Azuma). Secondly, Racer ALONE was knocking around Natsu AND Gray and they couldn't do a thing about it. Erza was briefly holding her own against the entirety of the OS (except Midnight) and she wasn't even using her strongest stuff.

And for even more finalized proof, there is the fact that Erza was the only one of the crew who didn't activate second origin from the get-go, i.e. she was one of the strongest people at GMG with the power she had back in Tenrou. She was around the same level as Kagura and Minerva with that level of power. Natsu on the other hand not only needed the huge second origin boost to get be on that level, but the LFD transformation and attacks. Natsu at the time was literally fodder for the likes of Erza.

Hell no. Natsu defeated Zero with DF not with his own power, how can you even say otherwise.

At least Midnight got some recognition, that means he was a little more then mere fodder for August. Cannot say the same for Cobra or Racer. Jellal was the centre of attention for August, given that he was the one that August was clearly directed at.

Refractor can be used in more ways then just illusions. It can be used to bind the target like he did with Erza (and gave her a tough time with it), stop solid attacks and offensively like he tried to do with August and August used it right back at him. Cobra isn't landing a hit.

Just because he knows Midnight is using illusions does not mean he could break them. Simply knowing that you are under an illusion is only half the battle, you actually need to be able to break it to actually do anything worth while.

I really don't agree with that point tbh.
Cobras magic isn't some massive AoE attack either so yes, it kinda does.

Read your post again. Midnight may have been stated to be the most fearsome back in OS arc..

But the conditions of this specific match up in the thread is Alvarez Arc. Which means we are talking about Current Cobra vs. Current Midnight.

OS arc and the Nirvana incident was a very long time ago. Most of the feats back then can almost be considered outdated in the current arc.

Alvarez Arc Oracion Seis' power is not canon (due to lack of feats), so this battle is still considered a fantasy battle in my opinion.

And while Midnight's reflector magic is pretty good, Cobra also has a slight advantage here because he can hear everything Midnight does and thinks about. Meaning he knows which attacks Midnight will use before he even uses it. He can even anticipate Midnight's moves throughout the whole battle.

I still think it's a draw, but feel free to think Midnight wins. I just disagree.

I think Cobra has a decent chance of winning this. Cobra is a pretty good counter to Midnight with his ability to hear thoughts, the strength of Midnight's magic is almost entirely in its mystery, without that its easily countered as shown by Erza. Illusions would be easy to see through with Cobra's sound magic too(still dont get why Jellal had to injure his eyes when all Erza had to do was close her real one).
That being said I think Midnight is the stronger of the two simply because he was in the OS arc and there isnt anything suggesting that has changed. Both these guys are fodder, i doubt they've improved much. Cobra is prob the weakest DS by a fair bit at this point

I still love these two. However I should choose Midnight since his reflector should be able to win against Erik.

Wait. All slayers can't eat their own elements right?

Midnight should win this! Cobra can't do shit to his reflector and mind-fucking illusions.
Reflector doesnt work on body - Erik nodiffs him by single punch. He was scared as fuck when Erza just slapped him

No diff??

Midnight was the most feared member of OS for a reason.

Spiral pain and his Illusions would fuck up Cobra.

Illusions wont work on Erik, he doesnt need his eyes to fight, and even if illusions work on mind, it still useless cuz he can hear Midnight.
Spiral pain can do shit cuz Cobra is the same tier and actually has better physical stats.
Fear =\= power. He was mysterious, thats all. Yes, he can beat other OS with his magic, but it is quite useless against someone who can hear your thoughts
