Hi Mangahelpers,

I was reading a book recently, and it discussed the subject of Old Spain.

- Does Old Spain have the most Old Catholics?
- What is Old Catholicism Vs. the Roman Catholic Church?

From what I've read, Old Catholics do not recognize the pope. This is an example of a major difference between Old Catholics and other types of Catholics.

"However, there are some areas of disagreement between the two traditions. Old Catholics reject the doctrine of papal infallibility and do not recognize the pope as the supreme authority in the Church. Instead, they emphasize the role of local bishops and believe in a more decentralized Church structure."

"The origins of old Catholicism can be traced back to the First Vatican Council, which was convened by Pope Pius IX in 1869. One of the main issues addressed at the council was the doctrine of papal infallibility. This doctrine held that the pope, when speaking ex cathedra on matters of faith and morals, was infallible and could not err. This was seen as a controversial development by many Catholics, who believed that it represented a departure from traditional Catholic teaching."

"A group of bishops, led by the Archbishop of Utrecht in the Netherlands, Johannes Heykamp, opposed the doctrine of papal infallibility and walked out of the council. They argued that the pope was not infallible and that the doctrine was not consistent with the teachings of the early Church. This group of bishops became known as the Old Catholics."

So, when we speak of Mihawk and the subject of Catholicism, there may be many ways to interpret it. However, if he is an Old Spain type of Catholic then he is likely to be an Old Catholic who does not recognize the pope as the supreme authority in the Church. He follows traditional catholic views.

Except his "ship" carries a cross in the form of his sword, his sword is shaped like a cross, and he has a cross on his necklace (which carries a tiny sword).

This should indicate he has some type of Catholic view and his theme seems to surround Old Spain.

At least, that's how I see it.

I don't think Mihawk has anything in common with Old Catholicsm at all, it's minor religious movement, nothing important in particular.

Mihawk seems to be character inspired by older times - somewhere between XV and XVIII century - and he might as well not be created to be Spaniard-like character at all. Portuguese or French (he looks like character straight out of Dumas' books, especially "Count Monte Christo") also seems logical, he's got some obvious Romanian traits as well (hmm.. Dracule, Transylvania), so he might be inspired by Roman European culture (I mean current Romance countries - Spain, Portugal, France, Romania, not Ancient Rome). In my opinion Oda created Mihawk based on conquistadors in general (although he looks more like Frenchman during revolution times, by I'd put it on Oda being from different culture circle and just minor mistake). Conquistadors were strictly connected to catholic religion and to church as well (but to minor degree, at least church claimed it was that way), so cross symbolic would be evident, but at the same time he's got Dracula reference (coffin boat).

Maybe it's some kind of symbolic connected to conquistadors - they were spreading "God's will" with sword and cross but mostly brought disaster, sorrow and slavery. When I think about it now, Mihawk looks similar to Hernan Cortes or Francisco Pizzarro, and we know Oda's familiar at least with the latter (but probably with both and then some). But he looks even more alike to... Simón Bolivar at some pictures, just look:
