A mystery he is.
Arima has been shrouded in mystery since we heard of him. There is so much going on with this character yet he has hardly had any appearances in the manga. (excluding Jack, since he is the main character in that.) We had this build up in the original. To us he was simply the badass of the Doves, but in the final battle he added even more intrigue towards his character. He says, after Kaneki speaks his madness, which I assume to be from a book, "Oh, I see, you're..."
Who is Kaneki to Arima?
Is he simply a kindred soul who shares a similar taste in literature? Is he a weapon, Arima sees potential in? Is he someone from the past, an acquaintance or family memeber?
So many questions from one statement.
A side story comes out called Jack, recalling Arima in his youth. Even at a young age he had such skill. This, to me, implies his skills were not something taught by the CCG. He has been training for a long time, even when he was young. What motivates him? He doesn't seem to hate ghouls, his opinion isn't very high on them, but I see no emotion in his kills. His skill level is so far ahead of everyone else, something smells fishy here. I theorize he has been close with ghouls in his past, since all the young protoge's seem to have lived within the ghoul world for a period of time, (Suzuya and Kaneki are examples since they seem to be the only young ones who are near Arima's level.)
His story further goes on. He keeps Kaneki alive, training him, showing him both kindness and cruelty. We know Arima is a smart man, he has to be. How has he not noticed Kaneki has broken free of Haise? If he knows, why is he giving Kaneki so much power? He stays absent, allowing Kaneki to take over his position in the Owl investigation. What is he doing that could supersede Owl? Eto is the big bad, right? She is the monster he could never quite catch, right?
Another oddity is his hair. Why is it white? It was dark when he was younger and he is not old enough to have it from age. (Is he crazy, like Kaneki was or is I suppose.)
I am sure I have missed some things and would love to discuss, theorize maybe. This is a thread for ARIMA,
