Hello fellow Mangahelpers!
It was a long pause, but we finally got ourselves a chapter. Unfortunately several days have passed since the chapter appeared, so I bet many topics were already discussed over and over again. So if you don’t mind I will review this chapter highlighting a few very interesting points I’ve noticed, and I’m sure you did, too.
First I have to say thanks to the folks from Binktopia who once again showed us speed and quality, but this time I’m borrowing both their translation and SleepyFans translation, so good job both teams, thanks a lot!
This week’s chapter continues in the same fashion and pace as we left of two weeks ago. There was an interesting cliffhanger at the end, Kishimoto showed us a conflict which has many ramification. This conflict’s end can easily be predicted or at least obvious scenarios can be thought, but the process is more important I think than the outcome, so let’s have a look at the way the situation will unfold.
As the title shows us Yami Naruto will be introduced in a more detailed fashion, but I don’t think it is a surprise to anyone. As I said above this chapter takes off where the last one ended, and this confrontation it’s starting with Naruto asking about the identity of Yami Naruto. As the latter introduces himself, Naruto can’t understand, or my take is that he doesn’t want to understand, since this development is something entirely new to him.
For us readers it’s not that new, honestly. There are other mangas where ones darkness appears and that certain character needs to use this darkness. I would mention though that it’s not really a rip-off from other mangas, though. Knowledge of ones inner self, confronting the inner darkness and conquering it is a widely used Asian motif. I won’t say we had to expect such a development of materialized hatred, but there were signs from the beginning of the manga, that even though emotions shouldn’t influence a shinobi’s life, actually their emotions enable to draw out great strength, therefore they have great significance.
That’s why I think it’s an obvious, but important issue present. How will Naruto be able to conquer this darkness, how will he make us of his presence or absence in order to be able to withstand Kyuubi’s will?
The first hint can be found in the cover text, which says:The indelible darkness engraved in Naruto’s history. Notice the word indelible, or if somebody is confused, then check the SleepyFans translation. Basically this darkness can not be removed, and I think suppressing it in Naruto’s situation won’t work, because the shinobi that he is in this moment is the result of the countless bonds he made with other people. These bonds represent emotions, so suppressing anger when one is lost, or hatred towards his enemies will result in letting Kyuubi take the best of him. Therefore I think the best solution is to control his darkness, to accept it, thus achieving full knowledge of his inner self. This way he can act calmly and will be able to use Kyuubi’s chakra without having the latter exploit his darkness.
Another hint comes from Yami Naruto himself, though this time Binktopia and SleepyFans translations are a bit different. The basic idea is that Kyuubi likes Yami Naruto, and this is a well-known fact, what is a bit new that Yami Naruto is aware of this. Now the difference between the translations is that in the Binktopia translation Yami Naruto judges the fact of Kyuubi using him a mistake, while in the SleepyFans translation it’s pointed out that the difference between Naruto and Yami Naruto is that Kyuubi likes Yami Naruto more.
The raw pics are quite blurry so I can’t make out what Yami Naruto is saying there in japanese, but if we were to guide ourselves to what the first translation says, then we could conclude that Yami Naruto doesn’t like the fact that Kyuubi is taking avantage of him. So this is the second hint, and it would be great it we were to see some teamwork between Naruto and Yami Naruto to defeat Kyuubi’s will. Teamwork means focusing together on a common goal, setting aside differences, which in this case means that Naruto will have to accept Yami Naruto and vice-versa.
In the meanwhile there’s another confrontation taking place on the island, but we’re only shown the outcome of that confrontation. Kintoki the Giant bear is easily defeated by Killer Bee, who as it look like is spending his time playing with animals. He has a small interaction with Hachibi who reveals that he knows Kyuubi, or at least aware of its existence and tries to persuade Bee to teach Naruto.
This island sure is something, though. It’s a great introduction to the Naruto universe, and we get a chance to unravel the other parts of the world not just Konoha. The atmosphere is very calm, therefore I would’ve liked to see what are the other characters doing. Well I guess this it’s Naruto’s and Bee’s moment, but even Bee is getting little screentime. His short intervention is over with an enigmatic statement. The only thing I can think of this statement is that Kishimoto is reinforcing the thought of Bee recognizing Naruto hatred, which was introduced last chapter.
This darkness is really a pain in the ass for Naruto. Their abilities are the same, tactics and way of thinking is the same as well. This is not a surprise since the source is the same person, only the personalities and the emotions differ. The confrontation is not leading anywhere, so Naruto interrupts this short voyage in his inner world, and returns to Yamato and Motoi. After this short experience Naruto realizes that this will be difficult to do alone, so Motoi accepts to tell the story of Killer Bee and how did he manage to pull off a feat such as conquering his true self. I was a little disappointed when it turned out that Naruto again requires help with something that should be entirely his problem, but at least we get a glimpse of Kumo history in this process.
As theorized in my last review, the circumstances of a Jinchuuriki are different from a country to another, and in Killer Bee's case Raikage was a pillar of support, so Killer Bee didn't want to disappoint him. It's interesting how Killer Bee thought that being a Jinchuuriki is pride not shame, despite he was subject to hate and fear.
It's different from Naruto and Gaara who developed in their own way, granted that they were all by themselves and Gaara even had assassins to handle.
What's another interesting fact is that Jinchuuriki's are chosen as relatives of the Kages. Now that I think back, it's very obvious, although I wonder Yugito what kind of relative was. Anyway I haven't seen this discussed, before so I guess it's new for people, I mean at least the fact that being relative to the Kages is not coincidental. When I read the paragraph involving this statement, the first thing that popped into my mind is Yondaime's choiceof putting Kyuubi into Naruto. The most accepted idea is that Yondaime had faith in Naruto, maybe he had some unique characteristic, like being pure-Senju or whatever. With Motoi saying things like these, I don't really think it was Yondaime's choice to put Naruto into Kyuubi, more like the Elders are involved in this. Now that this crossed my mind, I kinda want Sasuke murder them, somehow they are on the same level as Danzou. At least Danzou was a man of action. I think Yondaime believed in Konoha's spirit and in people such as Kakashi, Jiraiya and Sandaime to guide Naruto, and not be a victim of the Elder's doings.
Why would though a Jinchuuriki be a victim or be hated?
The panel speaks for itself. Large tails bringing destruction, it's similar with the image of Kyuubi destroying Konoha. The panel involves Motoi, who refused to be a liaison between Naruto and Bee, because in he past he tried to kill Bee. I think the circumstances of Motoi are the similar to those of Iruka. Iruka lost his parents in the Kyuubi attack, but he managed to respect Naruto as a shinobi and love him as a child, and I see that Motoi's relationship with Bee is similar.
This story will take us back to a short trip in Kumo history, and maybe the story will serve as a hint for Naruto to solve the mistery of conquering his darkness.
Quick summary/Opinions:
I think it was a decent chapter, the focus on Naruto is getting longer chapter by chapter, which means there is nothing else happening in the world, which is quite odd, considering that there's a war. This doesn't mean that Naruto being in the focus is a bad thing, but my personal taste inclines towards having other scenes and characters presented. With this incursion in the past of Kumo will be entertaining, past recollections are among my favorite things in the manga. Different circmustances, different ways of development, but Jinchuuriki and the relationship with normal shinobi are the same, so some dramatic scenes are to be expected.
The highlight of the chapter is Yami Naruto, who was introduced in the last chapter. He is the total opposite of Naruto, very straightforward and not hesitant at all, but he is the darkness of Naruto and contains all the hate and anger built within himself. I hope when Naruto will complete this training, he will show the straightforwardness and honesty of Yami Naruto, this will be necessary in order to control Kyuubi successfully.
The art was mediocre this chapter, but I noticed that the trend of giving surprised and awe-full facial expressions whenever Bee's name pops up out of Motoi's mouth, continues. This further enhances Bee's reputation, but his lack of action disappoints me, at least he could be clear with his statements.
The little insight of Hachibi regarding Kyuubi was great, I hope we get more interactions like that, and the revelation of the Kage-Jinchuuriki relationship was also very welcome.
So it's a 7/10. There was nothing special, the character development was less than expected and there was nothing new. The plot itself is moving slowly, though next chapter we will get information about the past, which is great.
With mediocre art, and some good moments involving Motoi and Bee, this chapter can be included in the category of a transition chapter of the transition chapters.
I think everyone agrees that this is a transition period, where Kishi develops Naruto and the war, sets the historic background of some characters in order to effectively develop them in the future. Obviously there's nothing much happening, there's mainly character development and background setup. A transition chapter within a transition period is not so great, the only good moments are few, and in this case the art was mediocre as well.
Predictions/Want to happen:
I'm not so thrilled with this chapter, but at least I'm looking forward to the next. Past recollections, history are among my favorite moments in the manga. It has the purpose of giving some sense and coherence to the world that is presented, and in this case I hope it will haev some influence on the current development with Yami Naruto as well.
As said above, I expect Motoi's circumstances to be similar to Iruka's,but given that this is a story involving Kumo I expect it to be a different a bit.
Let's just wait for the next chapter, I bet it will be better.
