Hello folks! Welcome to the review of chapter 504 of the manga Naruto. The Edited Manga and translation of the chapter was brought to us by Binktopia so I thank them in all our names for another well done job.
Also I feel weird, the more I read this chapter the more feelings a pity gush out of me. Pity for a family that wasn’t meant to be together, and especially for the parents who were forced to sacrifice their life. I guess it’s a tough life, that of shinobi in Narutoverse, but this event that marked the lives of many people especially for Naruto and his parents was a tragic event mostly and even if Kishimoto delivered a fan service like no other conerning Minato, the important part is still the meaning of family of shinobi.
I also want to apologize for the unannounced break last week. Well circumstances and circumstances, but in the end I didn’t have one period of time long enough to start and finish the review. But I’m sure that those who are interested in what I said know my stance on the chapter, because I posted a lot in the chapter discussion thread.
What can I say the battle was great, and there were some scenes that stirred a lot of controversy. First it was Kurenai’s father who was clumsy in his way of formulating his order to his daughter. I remember another clumsy person and that was Sasuke’s father, Fugaku who was more like a man of action, not a man of words, and most of his conversations with Sasuke were pretty rough, Mikoto being there to comfort Sasuke when the intended meaning of his words needed to be translated into more understandable words.
My understanding of those words was: live to be able to educate the next generation and pass them your own will of fire. Make sure the village survives. This is because we heard it a million times in this manga and in other stories that a nation is its people, in this case Konoha is its people.
Another controversy was this:
It was interesting why Minato chose to die and chose this path of splitting Kyuubi in half and seal the two parts the way he did. We understood from chapter 503 is that he decided not to seal all Kyuubi with Shiki Fuujin, but it was also a bad idea to make Kyuubi disappear for a while with Kushina. So basically I understood that he had two options: let Kushina seal Kyuubi in herself, or seal Kyuubi in the Shinigami. This way one or the other parent would’ve survived and Naruto wouldn’t have been a Jinchuuriki. But Minato was Hokage as well, and he couldn’t afford to lose Kyuubi, who was a valuable weapon of Konoha, and he sought to it that the Bijuu balance of the villages should be kept. Also there was Jiraiya’s warning, and he recognized this warning and its proeminent characters: Tobi who stands for destruction and Naruto who will defeat him. So there were more circumstances than life and death here, and what we’ll learn in chapter 504 will enligthen us even more on the parameters of this decision.
This whole flashback was a detailed presentation of Konoha, which consists in its beliefs, its friends, its people, and enemies. So this flashback is very similar to the other flashback we had in this arc, Kumo’s flashback, which also presented the life of the village, but from a the point of view of the 2 people who were protagonists. This time the protagonists are the members of the Naruto family, I don’t know if I can call them this way, but it sounds okay.
As the village is a great community, a community also has its own separate cells, and this flashback presented Konoha from the perspective of a family, Naruto family. Chapter 504 ends this homage to this family and completes Naruto’s character by giving him parental love, quite enough from what we can see.
The title itself sets the mood for good bye. Knowing the circumstances of this good bye, makes it a tragic one, but also one filled with love and affection. Thank you is the expression for gratitude, and we can recognize that it has different meanings in this chapter. Knowing that this is the end of the flashback this could be a thank you from Naruto, who is grateful that his parents filled him with love, and helped him in his most critical moments of his life. Their sacrifice can be understand as mystical as well as it followed and aided Naruto in his challenges as a shinobi and as a person.
Kushina is very grateful to Minato, because Minato worried about her and made sure that she can see Naruto once again when Naruto is grown up. But Kushina is grateful to Naruto as well for accepting them as his parents and not holding grudge against them for all those painful years alone.
But I think from our point of view, the most important meaning is when we say thank you ourselves as I know that the most of us fans, are grateful for this wonderful flashback that Kishimoto delivered. Maybe the emotions and the action weren’t balanced throughout the chapters, but the most important things which were the development of the characters, the fast pace of the plot, the questions answered were present. The chapters started pretty calm and the action wasn’t at its peak, but Kishimoto ended a very spectacular battle last week, so I guess the emotions that were missing so far were presented in this chapter. And I think that I’m not far from the truth when I say that this emotions were overwhelming.
It’s hard to miss the expressions of these emotions, but as we check the chapters we will encounter them again.
As I said earlier what means to be a shinobi of Konoha means that sacrifice is gladly done if it is for the sake of the family. Minato gladly takes this responsibility and makes sure that Kushina can see him again.
The discussion about the motives of using Shiki Fuujin for sealing Kyuubi in Naruto is continued and Kushina is against Minato using that particular seal. Kushina insists that even why does he want to die so badly, when he can be there for Naruto when he grows up. Minato’s answer is simple. His plan is to protect the village by making sure that a Jinchuuriki exists, but from family point of view he is not so necessary. There are things and emotions that mothers transmit the best, and Minato wants to make sure that Naruto will get these emotions and this support no matter what.. That’s why he uses Shiki Fuujin to quickly dispose of Kyuubi for eternity, but he leaves the rest and seals it into Naruto.
This is another testament of Minato’s quick thinking and his caring personality, and Naruto is the exact match of him. They share quick thinking and indefinite affection for the people close to them, and they are willing to sacrifice even their lives. Minato believes that Naruto eventually will use Kyuubi to gain greater power to face the destruction brought by Tobi, but he makes sure that Kushina would be there for her to help Naruto through this hard moment.
Stepping aside from Naruto family we see Sandaime who together with the shinobi of Konoha drove out Kyuubi from the village. They arrive at the scene and Sandaime is guessing that Minato is planning to use Shiki Fuujin for some reason. As Minato proceeds he is assured that it is indeed Shiki Fuujin, and I guess it is from the shape of the seal and the markings. The interesting thing is that the marking on the body seems to be similar to the Hakke Fuuin that Minato uses for sealing Kyuubi and Kushina into Naruto. I guess that the difference is in the markings around the whirlpool and the whirlpool itself is a symbol of the sealing art of Uzu Shio village. This is just an assumption, because I see no mentionable difference between the two so I guess the difference is in the details, which we’ll never see for ourselves, except for the Hakke Fuuin, when we saw what is the mechanism of the seal.
The Shiki Fuujin is done, but it seems that even the Shinigami has difficulties with the chakra of the Kyuubi as he feels that his body is going numb, despite the strong seal that was applied to it.
Besides this though there are other things that should be noticed. First is the size of Kyuubi. No wonder we saw Kyuubi as a vulnerable kitty when facing Naruto, it is less the half of its original size. We can tell by just looking at the footprint of the original Kyuubi and compare it to the current size of crippled Kyuubi. It is a really interesting detail.
Another thing is the presence of another beast: The Bloody Habanero. Of course this time the blood is hers, but what an enormous life force she has. Kyuubi was literally ripped out of her, it wasn’t a smooth extraction similar to what Akatsuki does. It got ripped out after giving birth to a baby, then she manages to hold down Kyuubi and even create a barrier with her chakra trapping themselves and Kyuubi in that barrier. That’s a monstrous power, and it is something that we can expect from Naruto as well. The reason of his quick recovery, his energetic behavior, his personality as a whole are somehow related to this tremendous life force Uzumakis boast. This can be considered as a further hint that Naruto will survive and extraction in the future, but I don’t think that will happen, because Kyuubi is kinda like part of the family now.
It is the best panel to support what I said earlier. The couple pierced by the reason of their sacrifice and little Naruto who is sleeping, without letting anything to bother him. So I think Kyuubi will stay just the way it always was, inside Naruto, otherwise the sacrifice, the ordeal of this family would’ve been in vain, even if Naruto ended up growing up mirroring his parents.
I think this is the panel the represents Konoha. The art is superb and the intentions of every character are directed towards Naruto. The chains tie Kushina with Kyuubi, but the claw also ties together Minato and Kushina to Kyuubi. The murderous intent and love, the everlasting conflict that influenced Naruto’s life is present even here, so I think that the developments, the main points, messages of the manga are comprised perfectly in this chapter.
But all good things are over, and we arrive to the most emotionally intense scenes in the chapter. From this point of view the chapter is at its peak, while Kushin and Minato say their final words to Naruto. I think the emotion captured in these panels are beyond words, as the love of the parents for their child is beyond words as well. We are are introduced to small details of Naruto’s every day life, and we recognize some of them being there, and some that are in complete contradiction with Naruto’s way of life. The 3 taboos of shinobi, finding a girlfriend, eating sleeping well are all little details, but details which are small testimonies of a mother’s love.
Kishimoto does a very good job, building up this tragic scene with the help of some comical sentences advices. He started with the little stuff like eating and sleeping, but then she moved to more important things like girlfriend, friend and teachers, basically the people who should give their support. But then she mentions that Naruto should stay away from weirds girls, and find someone like her, remark which to me sounded ironical, and I think Kushina also intended this more or less as a joke, because first of all she wasn’t a normal person from every point of view( I mean she was unpredictable and crazy
, just like Naruto), and second that she admitted that she doesn’t really know about these stuff, because she’s a woman. The comedy is not over yet, as this was just a little elements, but Kushina warns Naruto about Jiraiya, I think we know why(3 taboos), and Minato ends this whole moment with a splendid remark that can be atributed to every mother in the world. Mothers really talk too much when it comes to their children, but that reflects the amount of worry and love they carry for them. With this little twist coming prefectly from the mouth of a father, the flashback ends with Minato sealing Kyuubi into Naruto.
The seal itself was also shown, as Minato summoned the sacrificial altar, which is a good name, because Jinchuuriki are human sacrifices, sacrifices born to protect the village. The altar is nothing special, but it was another element that Kishi thought of showing, which was meant to explain how things work regarding sealing techniques. It’s not the first time we see an altar(Kakashi sealing Sasuke’s CS), and not the first time we see this particular altar, since in the beginning of the manga, Naruto is on that same altar, and the seal is made.
Another interesting thing is how Kishimoto showed Kyuubi’s line of thought. First he showed Kyuubi to only think the stuff it wanted to do, which is okay if we remember the theory, where its said that Kyuubi only talks when is inside a person, so it can somehow unite with abilities of the vessel. But the last panels with Kyuubi contradict this, as we see it talking and cursing humans for what they are doing to it again. It’s pretty sad, and the first thing that came to my mind is that Naruto probably empathises with this sadness, and he will try to talk to Kyuubi.
But all this probably in the following chapters, because we are finally back to current time, and Kushina is apologizing for not being there for Naruto. But Naruto understands this, and he brings up the idea of filling the vessel with love, thing which he sees as accomplished when it comes to himself, as the only reason he was able to live, was his parents’ sacrifice. This is great and shows Naruto as a person who can feel empathy, but this is not the first time, it’s just that Kishimoto is really consistent when it comes to Naruto’s character development, which is a great thing, because we can see and focus on every bit of this development without stopping and questioning it.
We can find the title again: Thank you and we can see the primary meaning of these words and from who they come from.
Quick summary/Opinions
What can I say? The emotions and the way the characters behaced in this chapter are splendid. The action was great as well, with many great panels of raw force or swift gestures. The activity of other characters was a bit disappointing, like Sandaime who is a great shinobi one of the greatest, was shut out just like that. But I can understand the reasoning behind this. This flashback was for settling the family portrait of Naruto and his parents, not to present other people in their glory. And the second reason is making Kushin a monster. That barrier she did while looking like that little girl from the movie The Ring was most impressive. All in all 9/10.
But I admit the emotions were overwhelming, in fact so much that it can leave anybody cold as well. The story itself didn’t add anything relevant to the plot, of course this was not intended, because this was meant for the emotional growth of Naruto. But reading a manga, without plot development is not that good, because character development is not the only thing that needs to presented. Some kind of balance is needed and most importantly clarity. And this chapter offered one of the greates dilemmas of why Minato used Shiki Fuuijn, dilemma for people who want the answer served on a plate. He made sure with the Shiki Fuujin that Tobi won’t have access to the foxes full power ever. He diminshed the danger, by sealing half of Kyuubi away permanently, as this is the only seal that permenantly seals away anything, something that even death cannot do, not even mentioning normal sealing technqiues. He also managed to keep a Jinchuuriki for Konoha, so he kept the balance of the bijuus intact. And this conclusion can only arrive from the sentence: protect the village.
The other explanations only stand for the emotional meaning and the symbol of a father who cannot let the mother take all the hardship. Also there is the symbol of being a communities leader, being a hero, whose son eventually to be recognized as the son of the hero. So this decision has its practical and its symbolic meaning as well.
The importance of this arc in the end was a symbolic, an emotional one. It had little to do with actual secrets that needed to be revealed, or showing the awesomeness of Tobi. This arc was meant to portray Kushina and Minato as exceptional shinobi and exception parents, and it was a success. From this couple Naruto was born who himself became an exceptional shinobi and an exceptional son. And sons love they mothers and don’t want them to suffer, and that little lie of not blaming them at all for his hardships, after punching Minato for that exact same reason, shows how considerate is Naruto and how similar to Minato in this regard. Basically a splendid family.
Predictions/Want to happen
It will an interesting chapter nr 505. The plot can begin in different directions, showing different people, maybe hinting some fights that will happen, but I think it will be an assessment of the things that happened inside, maybe some convo between Naruto and Kyuubi, but this is more like a wish of mine. Anyway if you have a specific prediction in mind don’t hesitate to post it, share it with us.

But reading a manga, without plot development is not that good, because character development is not the only thing that needs to presented. Some kind of balance is needed and most importantly clarity. And this chapter offered one of the greates dilemmas of why Minato used Shiki Fuuijn, dilemma for people who want the answer served on a plate. He made sure with the Shiki Fuujin that Tobi won’t have access to the foxes full power ever. He diminshed the danger, by sealing half of Kyuubi away permanently, as this is the only seal that permenantly seals away anything, something that even death cannot do, not even mentioning normal sealing technqiues. He also managed to keep a Jinchuuriki for Konoha, so he kept the balance of the bijuus intact. And this conclusion can only arrive from the sentence: protect the village.
The other explanations only stand for the emotional meaning and the symbol of a father who cannot let the mother take all the hardship. Also there is the symbol of being a communities leader, being a hero, whose son eventually to be recognized as the son of the hero. So this decision has its practical and its symbolic meaning as well.
The importance of this arc in the end was a symbolic, an emotional one. It had little to do with actual secrets that needed to be revealed, or showing the awesomeness of Tobi. This arc was meant to portray Kushina and Minato as exceptional shinobi and exception parents, and it was a success. From this couple Naruto was born who himself became an exceptional shinobi and an exceptional son. And sons love they mothers and don’t want them to suffer, and that little lie of not blaming them at all for his hardships, after punching Minato for that exact same reason, shows how considerate is Naruto and how similar to Minato in this regard. Basically a splendid family.
Predictions/Want to happen
It will an interesting chapter nr 505. The plot can begin in different directions, showing different people, maybe hinting some fights that will happen, but I think it will be an assessment of the things that happened inside, maybe some convo between Naruto and Kyuubi, but this is more like a wish of mine. Anyway if you have a specific prediction in mind don’t hesitate to post it, share it with us.
