Hello Mangahelpers! I’m very proud to presetn you the review of the chapter 506. I’m grateful that you appreciate and contribute to the discussion about my reviews, so special thanks goes for all the readers.
In Naruto action is the keyword nowadays. After Naruto disciplined Kyuubi, Minato disciplined Tobi in a superb flashback that we will all remember. The pace and the dynamic development is a very entertaining sight, since the battle continues with Konoha’s Blue Beast and Akatsuki’s Blue Shark. They had several encounters so far, but this one seems like the last, so let us see why.
The title is clear the fight will be the main focus of this chapter, as was hinted in the previous chapter’s last panel.
The first encounter was when Kisame and Itachi visited Konoha to locate Naruto, but we also know that Itachi had some settling to do. There Gai interrupted on a fight that seemed to be in advantage of Akatsuki and with one kick and some quick decision making he turned arounf the situation.
Second time Team Gai was in pursuit to locate the Akatsuki hideout, but they were engaged by a special clone, which enabled Kisame to fight with 30% of his capabilities. The fight was ended with Morning Peacock, a taijutsu move that proved to be an instant killer for Kisame.
So the history is there, but the comedy is there as well, that’s why this fight promises a lot from action and comedy point of view.
This third encounter begins with a surprising appearance of Gai at the Waterfall of Truth and he lands an elbow on Kisame. But we know Kisame and blows like this aren’t really supposed to knock him out. As expected Kisame has almost no injuries, but he looks kinda pathetic in the midst of all that rubble and with that insect-like form.
Kishimoto chooses to replay the events from the second battle, of course in different circumstances. Gai is letting us know that he recognizes his opponent, but we know that’s nowhere near true, and we are right as he recognizes a blowfish, instead of an opponent that he fought 2 times already.
It’s interesting that the atmosphere is so calm and relaxed. Aoba also thinks that it could be a giant animal from the island, but Motoi is raging due to the stupidity of the Konoha people. Bee is the one that ends the show, but even he doesn’t seem to be too worried about the Akatsuki spy.
Well I guess he’s right though. Among all these ninja Kisame is really outnumbered, so acting in a leisure way is somewhat normal. This normality is suddenly stopped when Samehada escapes Kisame and goes to tell Bee about its suffering. Bee shows again that he is somebody that can understand the heart and the emotions of others, so despite hearing just „gigigi” he understands that Samehada was forced by Kisame to remain silent about him being fused.
But this impressive feat somehow fades with Aoba’s statement about strong guys being stupid. And I have to admit that he is right. All the insight the knowledge about Kisame’s capabilities didn’t help bee to react when Kisame just went underwater while grabbing Samehada’s tail. The only thing that could bail out the incredible stupidity of a strong shinobi like Bee is reaction time and Kisame being in a blindspot. Kisame assessed the situation quickly and he sucked out Bee’s chakra, giving himself a little recovery. This recovery was needed, because he was in Samehada all this time, but didn’t have anything to sustain himself, no chakra nothing. Even Aoba whom I don’t remember seeing Kisame in real mentions that Kisame looks weakened. Well that changed in one instant and even Bee had no time to react.
Kabuto once said to a Sound ninja to not underestimate Naruto even if he had lower stats than anyone. Read beneath the underneath, never underestimate the opponent are fundamental rules of a shinobi and everyone seems to fall into this trap. While Motoi hurries to tend Bee, Aoba tries his technique on Kisame whilr Gai covers. Aoba’s technique is interesting, it involves kunai and strings that can paralyze the opponent. Unfortunately for Aoba the chakra connection that is required for this technique is returned to his disadvantage and Kisame sucks out his chakra as well.
Naruto is nowhere to be found the others are sucked dry or tending to others, only Gai is available. Another hint within the chapter itself that nobody interferes in his fight.
I agree with this. Leave it to Gai. Everybody is underperforming in this chapter only Gai gave everything from the first. The elbow stopped Kisame and knocked him down, then he engaged in teamwork with Aoba, but the poor guy got his chakra sucked out. Anyway he charges up himself with youth and unlocks it by shattering the chakra gates. This is not unexpected, everything is going in going as most of us predicted.
The comedic reliefs are coming one after another, as it’s like there’s no emergency, while Kisame is proceeding with his mission. As he summons the turtle he uses the poor animal to further increase his jump. Poor animal, at least it ended up in he rich environment near a giant turtle that can probably introduce it into the legacy of turtles.
What’s interesting that Bee somehow managed to lose all his chakra. But if we think a bit it’s not that long when he assisted Naruto in his fight against Kyuubi and he even reached his limit. Anyway what remained from that fight was also sucked out. But this is not the only thing which allowed him to escape. Aoba the poor fellow used a technique that was at his disadvantage, and it just makes me think if Kisame has absorption abilitis of his own, and he was just using Samehada as amplifier or something that could connect to chakra. So Samehada is just a medium as it looks like, but I cannot dismiss this thought that the merging with Samehada could be a reason that Kisame is displaying such abilities. So if they were merged or they were trained this way, then maybe Samehada retain some of the consciousness from a human, and Kisame turned into a form that is not very human-like anymore.
Another fighter that was decommisioned from this party is Naruto. Looks like he sustained injury from stomping too hard in that wall. Which means that this cloak doesn’t offer protection automatically like the old Bijuu Cloak did. I think this large quantity of chakra must be managed alone, so that it could offer the same protection the old one did. What Yamato meant by chakra control was towards the usage of Shunshin no Jutsu. Probably from this burst of energy Naruto lost control and his Shunshin was just to fast to control, basically he used more energy to perform the jutsu than he could control or react to.
So other than sensing we have no idea what this cloak does, but we’ve seen that it’s an elevated form of energy so I think jutsus will have more power to it now, just like how it was with Shunshin no Jutsu/ Let’s just hope there’s more.
So Kishimoto handled every character and left them out of the fight. Pretty plot device set up by him, but many of them are at the limit of understanding at least what we’ve seen so far. But I guess that’s the most interesting part. It just tells us that flaws exist even when it’s about a great shinobi, and the greatest flaw in this chapter that Kisame was underestimated.
Speaking of which, Kisame prepared a scroll, which probably contains battle tactics and the battle capabilities of Kumogakure, so it’s pretty crucial that the information gets to Tobi. Gai knows this and he lets his youth fill up the entire island. Even the animals sense his power, and as Kisame says the highspeed movement generates friction with the air, which generates flames.
And you guessed it right, the only taijutsu move that it has fire effect is Asa Kujaku or Morning Peacock. Gai uses this attack to destroy the decoy sharks Kisame created for his messenger shark to escape. Seeing that this doesn’t work, Gai knows that he needs to level up his performance to deal with the information leak. He thinks of a plan and unleashes that 7th gate. Kisame notices a blue energy that comes out of Gai in contrast to the green one that comes when only 6 gates are opened. Now thinking of this maybe Gai can’t go further, but honestly I don’t think he will need to go. This blue energy probably set his nickname, Blue Beast, so if this is a trademark move than I think there’s no more upgrade to this. As he prepares his last move Hirutora or Noon Tiger, Kisame charges up and meets the challenge with a Grand Shark Projectile, for which I don’t know the japanese name, but I will wait for SleepyFans translation to figure it out.
The fight is sure reaching its limits and probably it will end in the next chapter. We know that opening the gates has severe outcome for ones body, so there might be a twist that we don’t know or that we are not waiting for.
What’s another interesting thing is that the sharks are still there and Gai’s goal is to hit the sharks. That means that Kisame’s end is not something certain, because the information is not on its way yet.
Quick summary/Opinions
The chapter was pretty unidimensional. It focused on youth. Youth means energy, means fun, but also focus when the situation calls for it. Gai regains his lost youth in this chapter and managed to prove his name as one of the most powerful jounin in the Hidden Leaf. At least that was my impression of him all the time. But it was just that. Even the plot that had chances to move forward, it didn’t do much, since the scroll is still there somewhere waiting for Gai to destroy it.
But this chapter and probably the next are dedicated to the final battle between the 2 blue beasts. So it’s understandable that deep character developments and heavy plot development are almost inexistent.
This chapter was certainly filled with action, and when there’s water around Kishimoto always surpasses himself and creates insane action scenes with great detail. Proof are the double spreads that are the jewels of this chapter from art point of view.
The pace is fast dynamic and the humor is kept on pretty good levels, but overall the chapter or at least the first part of it seemed a bit rushed. Not necessarily the plot devices and the details, but the fact that there was too much calmness and almost no decisive action from Bee’s part, when he found himself face to face with Kisame. The frequency of jokes also helped with this feeling, so this chapter’s consistency is pretty much ruined in my opinion, as it shifted from a comedy freak show to an intense battle. So it is a 7/10 from me.
Predictions/Want to happen
I want some twist in the next chapter. It would be great if for example Tobi would pop in and ask Kisame if the mission was success. Tobi would then teleport the shark away and leave Kisame there. That would be cruel, which is very villain-like. Also he would interrupt the fight, but both would be severely injured/exhausted, so somedbody else would come to finish off Kisame, but Gai will insist and deal the final blow. It wouldn’t hurt Kisame to share some info before the end, just like Sasori did, so by judging from this chapter the next one will also be packed with action, dynamic development, but most of all it will have some kind of twist, which will throw off the balance of the chapter.
I say let’s wait and see, but if you have something very good on your mind please don’t hesitate to share it with us. Predicting can be fun, so let’s try having some fun with this, or if not then please post your opinions about the chapter, because I could’ve missed things that for others might be obvious.
